The acquisition of BT Ireland by Enet was just completed so I would say the investment will be similar now going forward, pure speculation again on my part. The ping for me anyway was exactly the same as when I was with Eir, I wasn’t able to see a noticeable difference between them.

I decided to go with Digiweb. Installer for circet coming today but the router has only been dispatched this morning, so wont be here. Will the install still go ahead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 665 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yes, the install will go ahead. if you had a spare router that wasn't too locked down, you could use that in the mean time.

No that wouldn't work, you could get your own router in Currys, Harvey Norman, Amazon etc. if you wanted though. You will be able to keep using the router then if you switch providers, just change the settings. I'm pretty sure these are the Digiweb NBI settings -

    PPPoE

    Username - digiweb@nga.digiweb.ie

    Password - digiweb

    VLAN ID - 10

The Saturday I was connected the original installer for our morning appointment was a no show. Got a call from Circet office before the end of the 08:00-12:00 appointment window asking if we were ok to move the appointment to the afternoon.

Grand I say, at least we were going to be connected that day.

The installer rang about 1:30 saying he was going for a cuppa before calling to us, arriving about 2:30.

He says he was asked by the office if he would take us in the afternoon, after his two morning jobs, luckily he did and earned an extra €300 for our 2 hour 'ish job.

Unfortunately installers can be a no-show or jobs can run over and then you get pushed back as there are no available appointments for the week or two ahead.

I would say watch out for a cancellation appointment offer before your date.

My appointment offer came on Thursday noon, via SMS from Circet, as I was walking towards Dublin zoo, offering the Saturday appointment. Rang them straight away and was offered a Saturday morning or afternoon appointment. Confirmation SMS arrived before I even paid the admission.

I'll give them a call this morning

They've just started putting the "black boxes" on top of the poles on my road, does anyone know how long it takes for it to go live and be able to request a connection after this ?

Have a look at my timeline a few pages back.

In my case, DP installed end of May, Pre-order available end of June, area went Ready to Connect early August, my DP was ready for service mid August, connected a week later.

    I pre-ordered July 9th, DP live August 18th, connected August 23rd

Every area will possibly have different timelines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭galtee boy

Thanks for all that info, just one more question, did NBI email you when it was time for pre order ? (I'm registered for the updates ).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,279 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

    Yes, July 17th iirc.

Two and a half weeks after going pre-order available and over a week after placing the order.

Just got preorder email - 35 potential providers listed (headwreck!). Any tips - holiday house used a couple of times a month, sometimes for extended weeks over Christmas, summer etc.

The install was completed yesterday for me by a very friendly "yes" chap. Took about an 1-1.5h for overhead install. Neat and tidy.

    Pure is the reseller.

So far mildly unimpressed, due to streaming services that I tried (Netflix and Paramount), when trying to play anything will have massive delays before playback starts. Did not experience anything like with Imagine or my mobile hotspot (I have Voda, Gomo and Sky = Voda grid sim cards here).

I will be troubleshooting my networking stack to see if it could be anything on my side before calling Pure to discuss.

Latency to usual suspects seems to be in the ball park.

    Disappointing.

Are the videos now playing in significantly higher resolution? Larger buffers and setup time on the player side is needed for 4k/8k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭sebna

Resolution is the same = 4k.

Bitrate for Netflix possibly higher - is there a way to check during playback?

Some random Netflix shows will start instantly like with all of my other connections at home but 80% would give me progress ring taking 10-30s before playback starts.

EDIT: YT vids kick in instantly with 4k 60fps at full bitrate.

Finally after 25 years of no fixed line broadband of any kind. We got the email for Pre Order.

Another "advantage" of living here is no mobile coverage. So ideally want to get rid of Eirs overpriced copper POTS and get a phone service with the fibre connection.

So looking at vodafone €55 a month for 1G with phone, they say I can transfer my Eir landline number, + €6 extra for a fixed IP address.

Anyone got any comments on that good or bad?

Wake me up when it's all over.

I would not and did not go with Voda. Difficult support, the only re-seller as far as I know that locks you into their integrated ONT / router box and give you no access to configuring it (so even things like parental control have to be requested over the phone with big-corpo support line).

After researching I went with Pure Telecoms.

    Good luck.

Vodafone’s router can be removed. You can remove all ISP routers when going through NBI. It’s only Virgin through their own FTTP access network that you wouldn’t be able to remove without additional hardware.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,228 ✭✭✭dam099

Vodafone don’t have an integrated ONT/Router, simple to use your own router direct to the ONT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 217 ✭✭ptogher14

Does anyone know if NBI will splice an existing cable? I built a few years ago and when building pulled a cat6 and fibre from the comms rack to the telecomms box on the gable end of the house. A 50mm duct was ran from the telecomms to the pole on the road. The NBI fibre is now coiled at the pole. I am assuming they are going to pull to the telcomms box and drill through the back and mount in the house keeping their fibre from pole one continuous run. Ideally they would splice the existing cable in the telecomms box so I have fibre back at the rack.

Any chance of this being done or is it down to luck of who you get on the day?

I don't know the answer but it's safe to assume they will only use their fibre direct to the ONT. They have to guarantee the integrity of the network connection all the way to the ONT. My installer a few weeks ago said the light level drop between DP and ONT must be no more than 1dBm, so an unbroken line I guess.

Thanks for the reply Cush, excuse my ignorance on networking/fibres. My understanding of a ONT is, it is a converter, to convert fibre to ethernet. It also requires power?

So in theory if this is installed inside the house beside an existing RJ45 outlet, I can then use this installed cable as a "Patch lead" to plug the ONT into my router placed at the comms rack?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,279 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

Yes, power socket required for the ONT.

And yes, the router can be located elsewhere in the house via the internal ethernet cabling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,127 ✭✭✭Glaceon

I wasn't happy with the placement of my ONT. I wanted it in the utility room along with the other comms equipment and UPS. They would only run it to a side wall of the house, the utility room was on the other side and they wouldn't use a pullthrough. The compromise was to put it in the kitchen near power and Ethernet sockets. So I ended up powering the ONT through a PoE to 12V adapter from the utility room so it's still on the UPS.

You'll feel like you won the lottery after 25 years in that case. Personally I wouldn't pick Vodafone, I think there's more robust products/offers available. Vodafone customer care isn't great nor is their modem and you'll need the Vodafone modem connected if you want to have Vodafone phone service as well.
Eir 1GB FTTH NBI is only 44.99 a month. Their customer care is based in Ireland and I found them very good the last 2 years I ahd them. I'm with Digiweb now and they have 1GB NBI with unlimited UK and Ireland calls to landlines and mobiles, E35 for 6 months then going to E60. Their modem and reliability is far superior to Vodafone too.

If you're only gone pre-order I think Digiweb offer you free install when in Pre-order stage too and if someone refers you to Digiweb you'll get E30 credit towards your bill.
