I would love a tee-shirt or a sweatshirt and think it could be a good earner if not life changing .But maybe too much work for Odhrán and Mike at the present time .

Maybe delegate to some boardsies to organize ?

@Goldengirl I had a question and answer thread in the private sub forum, but not good for non members?

A public one was never created, even with me suggesting it.

I change my signature but you can view Odhran's Comments on this link. Similar for Mike's.

I can . And fair dues for you for putting that together corkie.

But the point I was making was that those asking questions have to wade through lots of info , some not relevant , on this thread . So maybe if @Big Bag of Chips could stickie your link or Odhrán's posts to the title here it would save a lot of frustration .

Then if this was referred to, when questions asked , people could view Odhrán's posts themselves together and make up their own minds . Save some of the aggro that has occurred the last few days here .

Nobody wants an 'us and them' situation . We are all contributing here in some manner be it financial , or just entertainment ;)

The cycling forum has had boards gear for decades and there was a long running 'spot the boardsie' thread for when people still wore it. Still have some knocking around (see below) but haven't seen another boardsie in the wild for years. From memory, I think a few other forums had something similar. Alas, I had to cut out of my favourite boards winter jersey following a crash that left me with two dislocated shoulders. Talk about adding insult to injury!

Shouldn't be difficult to do for anyone who has a bit of time to dedicate to it. There are a ton of design your own t-shirt providers out there with a good range of prices and quality depending on what you have in mind.

Odhran's post was moved to a dedicated thread by the look of it. https://www.boards.ie/discussion/comment/123870305#Comment_123870305

    +1

Wasn't there some sort of contest for the design back then? I seem to recall reading the designers response, back in the day.

Problem with merchandising is it's an upfront cost where you have to buy the merchandise and then resell. It's probably a once off hit over a couple of years. When people have the merchandise they tend not to repeat purchase again. So you have to lay out maybe 3-5k in the hope to make a once off 5-10k.

TBH the most obvious solution is nearly always the most obvious solution. 100k is not a significant sum to run a website like boards.ie and at that it will only keep it ticking over. There is no magic solution someone has to pay, once off funding isn't a viable long term solution. That is like trying to run a GAA or Soccer club with a fun day and a church gate collection.

What surprises me is the amount of posters that do not understand that a company is a separate entity to an individual. As boards is in debt it woild be irresponsible of directors to remove money from it if it was closing down.

@smacl Love this except no way would I wear a cycling jersey 😳 Nice ladies cut v neck in black would be my choice . 👌

hope you have recovered well from that ..sounds bad ? Had a similar nasty injury myself on the way home on my bike a few years ago and it did for me for a good while . Still get shivers thinking about it and still have problems sleeping with my neck .

Boards distracted me from thinking about that time .

(Meant to quote smacl's post with the cycling gear above )

I’m sorry but a site like boards should in no way cost anything near this. Look at askaboutmoney, Brendan keeps that running himself for less than 3% of that budget

    Technical support: $1450 = €1,200

    Hosting £1308 = €1500

Xenforo annual license and support $86 = €73 (There was an initial purchase price)

    Anti-spam and other add-ons : c.€200

    Total annual running costs: <€3,000

Totally different size of site. Totally different traffic level, it like funding a club team V a county team

When you sub quote a pose you should quote the entire post as well

I love that the first time they've stuck an announcement post up that can't be replied to it's a somewhat cranky response directly to me. Sound.

Can Odhran's previous replies be added to that, too, please? Especially those where he replied to all thr questions up to that point.

(also: plenty of post/announcements that are locked, on every forum - e.g. each forum charter).

I thought companies like Redbubble or Spring (the one that a lot of YouTubers use for their merchandise) just took their cut from each item sold and that the YouTubers don't actually have a stock of stuff to initially buy and no initial outlay. I could well be wrong on that, it was just how it looked from the outside.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Perhaps once upon a time but perhaps we can acknowledge that boards is not the web behemoth it once was. Even taking scale into account I believe my point remains valid. You could have a non-broken version of boards working for a fraction of the costs that are being quoted to keep the current glitchy, broken searched version going.

Regarding you're suggestion on what I should be doing when sub quoting a post, it speaks very well to boards broken infrastructure. There is no simple way to quote only part of a post and I saw absolutely zero point in quoting an entire post to address a very specific point and which would have made it look like I was quoting a post about merchandising while entirely missing the text I was actually interested in.

If you want to reply you can link it and reply here, you can even link Odhran. They have put announcements up before but they get swallowed up in the sh!te petty replies. There was a consensus that Boards should put up an announcement thread so that all people could access then and see them.

The response is not cranky it just gives the state of play. Yes he replied to you and you may feel a bit put out over that. If you checked the thread since you would see all Odhran's posts re the situation have all being put up.innthis announcement thread.

It needs to be put as a sticky on the Announcement ir the Home page for easy reference but allowing post in that thread would not work. If you want to reply reply here where the BS gets swallowed up with all the other BS

This is the modern model for merch.
The "seller" carries zero stock, stuff is fulfilled and manufactured to order by a contracted 3rd party.
Generic T-shirts, mugs, mouse mats and anything else only printed up when a customer orders and pays.
The "Seller" gets a cut from the sale.
Even sub-reddits can manage that merch model.

An example is the r/dune merch shop, a group of sci-fans splitting the commission earned by selling T-shirts via teeRepublic.com

Yep, plenty of options out there for custom printing and embroidering most types of common clothing. Small numbers means higher unit costs so if this was to be done, you'd need to start by figuring out who wants what and getting it costed up. New thread possibly in order if anyone is interested in going down this path.

All recovered here, though one shoulder doesn't look as pretty as it once did. Having both arms in slings at the same time was no fun, even less so for my exceptionally understanding late wife! Loads of physio, off the bike for about 4 months and a bit nervous cycling for about a year after. They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger but I'm not entirely convinced. Hope you're also fully recovered from your own injuries, these things can take their toll one you.

Agreed, main thing to migrate are the user base and about a years worth of threads from each forum. Difficult to justify the rest if it has a substantial cost implication.

There is no simple way to quote only part of a post

    Erm…. 😉

    "simple"

    Erm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,822 ✭✭✭savemejebus

@smacl & @New Home The user I was responding to was taking me to task for having used that facility rather than quoting their full post (which I'm guessing would have notified them about). Previously (and on other sites) you could quote a post and then edit out content which was unnecessary very simply. I don't think there is a simple process to do this on boards any more.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 79,502 Mod ✭✭✭✭New Home

Yes, I agree - I was replying to @smacl with the intention of stressing that the keyword was "simple", whereas it's anything but - you need at least 8 actions on the computer to partially quote something, and it's even messier on the laptop. In hindsight, it probably sounded like I was agreeing with him.

Agreed, but even in the Vbulletin days you needed a bit of keyboard dexterity. The Vanilla UI is a pain in many ways but I also think it is very far from the biggest problem that this site faces. Stuff like posting pictures and other media is actually way easier than it used to be (though likely at a cost of paying to host the accumulated media content).
