I saw your post yesterday Comhrá, so you're not going crazy!

I really want boards to survive as much as anyone and I think I've been very vocal about that. It's absolutely the logical first choice and I think most people would agree. I feel a lot of people are disheartened simply because they don't think it's looking possible. Too many have already given up. If everyone thinks the worst, then it's likely to happen. On the other hand, if everyone is just willing to try, our numbers will quickly add up to the required amount. It's only €6 for a monthly subscription. I still think we can do it and am hoping there are enough people who are just leaving it until the last minute. If anyone is waiting or on the fence, I would suggest doing it soon so it encourages others.

At the same time, it would be completely naive of us to not come up with a plan B while there is still time for us to discuss it, especially given the lack of engagement and reassurance from the management. Gubu wouldn't be my first choice due to the anti-boards attitude on it, but it's just downright censorship to not allow us to discuss all of our options given the situation. I don't think there is any risk of the weather forum members defecting to there or anywhere else unless there is a definite announcement of boards' closure.

Thanks Docarch for confirming it wasn't weather mods deleting.

In a year's time, which would you miss more? €50 or boards?

@waterfaerie, many thanks for the confirmation I wasn't hallucinating after all!

Also @Docarch, thanks for confirming it was none of the weather mods who deleted my post. I had never suspected they did anyway, as they are all very fair and restrained in their moderating style.

Just to say, this is, imho, the best, friendliest and most civilised forum on Boards with great camaraderie among the members.

Whatever happens, I hope it is able to migrate to a good location and that the regulars port over with it. It would be a shame if it all evaporated after so many years of shared knowledge, expertise and entertainment. Fingers crossed.

I’m not really a contributor at all, but I peruse the weather forum and threads every day. I just love this community and would be very sorry to see boards go. Please let us quieter members know if/when ye decide to move to new pastures!

(Payday this week and I’ll subscribe then)

I'm more a reader than a contributor to the weather forum, but I must say @M.T. Cranium's ongoing forecast posts during lockdown(s) gave me a bit of a sense of normality and calm in the midst of not so great times. It's hard to explain but anyway, they did. 😁

Like others, I'm glad to at least have tried to help to save the place, and if it goes, I'll be sorry to see it happen. As regards the contribution, again, like others, I think I've got plenty of value for money through the years anyway.

I remember reading a post about Gubu and a complaint about the small font. Can't remember where it was or who said.

I believe that was mine. I posted my comment about GUBU and the small fonts yesterday in this thread and it was removed without comment shortly afterwards.

    Ref. Discussions.ie

Is there any issue with the above? I tried registering yesterday without success.

    I am receiving:

"Your account is currently awaiting confirmation. Confirmation was sent to ******@****.ie"

I have not received any email despite using the 'resend' option. Nothing in my spam folder either.

I messaged them yesterday but no reply.

fyi, i posted in their feedback thread about your issue. Hopefully something happens. g'luck

    Thanks Neowise! I appreciate that!

I just read this in their feedback section:

"Unsure why, or if it's related to Outlook, but my outlook account didn't receive any verification emails after I tried to verify 10+ times over two weeks. I eventually just signed up today with a different email account (not outlook), but figured I'd mention it just in case."

I also have an @outlook email, so it looks like there's an issue with that domain?

Like many others here, I read this Forum every day. I would be very sorry to see it go, though I feel the management of Boards.ie did not help their case with the software change many years ago. I have subscribed to the yearly subscription and would encourage others to do likewise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,113 ✭✭✭acequion

I'm very much on the fence. While I would be sorry to see boards.ie go,it's not a particularly friendly place. A poster above referred to the camaraderie on the weather forum but I disagree. While the majority of posters are sound and respectful of others, there is a cliqueishness on here and a certain intolerance which is not pleasant. Over the many years I've been active here I've witnessed many posters being bullied and ganged up on and eventually driven away. This happens across the board on Boards and it is a great pity.

So why pay money for that? Posters who are very anxious to save this site need to think about that. A more tolerant, friendly environment might encourage more subscribers. I also agree that the change in software did not help.

I'm adopting a wait and see approach. And as yet no plans or ideas if Boards goes.

Mod Note: acequion you have made this point clearly and repeatedly, if you have a problem with a poster report it, I don't see anyone bullying in the weather forum, if you have a problem in another forum take it up with the moderators there.

You need to cease this line of antagonistic posts : goading for arguments and dragging the thread off topic and playing the victim.

Agreed. I'm here nearly 19 years and the amount of nastiness and aggression has increased quite a lot over the years. I have stuck around here but I keep my posting to a minimum nowadays.

There are a few very civil forums though, and the weather is one of them, but many other ones have some dislikable characters who definitely help stifle discussion and drive people away.

An interesting thing I notice…. many forums have a resident 'forum know-all' or two. You know the ones who always pontificate and expound as if they're the last word and respond with irritation if their edicts are ever questioned. They also never ask any question…almost as if it were an admission of weakness having to admit they actually didn't know the answer to something or other.

Those characters are not to be confused with the many expert and knowledgeable folks who contribute hugely to discussions in a positive and helpful way across many of the forums, weather, aviation, motoring and others to name just a few.

Internet forums are a bit like golf clubs. They attract all sorts and eventually their personal strengths and weaknesses are apparent for all to see as they show their character, positive or otherwise.

Thank you. Such things need to be pointed out as people are now being asked to hand over money.

I've been a member since 2004. I still like to post and very much appreciate the level of knowledge and information on the overall site. But unless I see some evidence of more tolerance and fairness I probably won't subscribe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,572 ✭✭✭Comhrá

Well, I did the 6 months subscription. If the lights go out then I'm only down €28. I reckon I've got enough value here over the years for that small amount, but if it survives and doesn't improve the functionality of the site, and/or the moderation, than I'm out.

you haven’t seen bullying in the weather forum??! Hillarious.

Apologies if it's already been answered, I'm only a sporadic visitor these days, but Boards has been around for what, 25 years now, why has it suddenly this year become unviable?

    I've paid the annual sub:

Been on boards myself in one guise or another since November 2009.

Beginning in 2018, there has been an increasing intolerance and hostility between posters who disagree on the " hot " issues. Also, boards management are looking in the wrong place for solutions, and trying to use the same measures as RTE to resusitate its own self made fraught situation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,624 ✭✭✭highdef

I've been a member on Netweather for many years and there is Ireland section in the forum there -

    https://community.netweather.tv/clubs/13-ireland-community-group/

There are other Board.ie members who are members on Netweather and the forums are fairly well moderated. It has been mentioned that a majority of members in the Ireland forum are actually in Northern Ireland as the site is UK based however there is absolutely nothing to stop people from here (Republic of Ireland) to begin posting on Netweather. Exactly in the same way that people living in Northern Ireland are free to post in the weather chats on Boards.ie.

I've just taken a look at the Netweather group, will probably sign up over the next few days. The site does seem incredibly slow at loading, hopefully it's not like that all the time.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 19,472 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Not a fan of Netweather forum and the format/useability of it. Hopefully, if comes to worst, we will look at setting up a separate/dedictaed forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,624 ✭✭✭highdef

I've not noticed any slow loading issues and I have checked in a couple of times today with no delays.

I'll migrate fully to it if the need arises. Been registered since 2010. And I have the same handle there as I do here.

Looks like Boards is here to stay for another year at least as per the last update from the owner just posted now.
