If Boards goes

Looking at the funding that's still required, it looks more than likely that Boards will cease to be, sadly.

I don't post much to this weather forum, but I read and use this weather forum on a daily basis. It would be sad to lose it. Are there any alternatives in place should it go? Could an Irish weather forum on Reddit be setup?

I just subscribed. Better late than never.

Come on people, let’s keep boards alive by subscribing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,618 ✭✭✭pauldry

Id suggest they make the current status more visible as a sticky thread on all their boards pages. Only realised today where they are in relation to their target. Surely another 1400 people is possible. How many use it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,601 ✭✭✭esposito

I just subscribed like 10 mins ago but the current status on https://keepboardsalive.com/ has not updated. It’s still at 686 subscribers…

The Paid Member tag hasn't appeared under your name. Did you subscribe using another email? They're used to match to the boards.ie account, so if they're different you'll need to ask Mike to reconcile them.

Over on https://www.discussions.ie/ their are quite a few 0 threads 0 comments forums (fora?) Fire in a request and get a weather forum started, just in case.

There is a healthy enough weather forum over on Grotesque, Unbelievable, Bizarre, and Unprecedented (first letters).ie
(edit: well, healthy is probably overstatement, no post in 10 months, but it has the infrastructure, just not the contributors)

You could request a new forum over on https://forumofgames.com/index.php but its more games related forum, so would be in off topic.

Maybe others can add to this short list.

God I was going to subscribe too but it seems very difficult.

Maybe ill wait till a few of you guys are successful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,097 ✭✭✭acequion

You really would think they'd make it easier for people! Especially to save the site. I joined up way, way back and the email address I was using then no longer exists.

I will do the same as @pauldry and wait to see how others get on or if they can make subscribing less complicated. I would certainly be happy to subscribe and try to save the site.

Maybe update the e-mail address in your profile before subscribing?

Thanks. Just tried doing that in the edit my profile page. Won't let me.

It doesn't matter if the email still exists or not. All you need to know is what it was, which you should be able to see on your profile. Then if you decide to subscribe, make your payment and drop Mike a PM saying my original email was whatever it was. And that's it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,952 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

Its not difficult . There are lots of people who have initially registered under different emails and Mike has been matching the new subscriptions fairly quickly to the old emails . Just subscribe then pm at the address in Mickeroo's post above if interested .

The Weather forum here is so good . It would be a shame to lose it or have it fragmented to different sites .

Help keep Boards going , subscribe or donate if you can.

    It's not difficult.
If you decide to subscribe, go ahead and make a payment, then drop a PM to Mike and he will be able to match the payment to your username. Just tell him what your email address was originally, which you should be able to see on your profile.
Loads of people have changed their email address since they first joined the site. You're not alone! 😁

If an auld wan like me can manage to subscribe several weeks ago then surely all you keyboard pounders can work it!

Go on.....subscribe …..and Mike will work it.

Have to keep boards alive for the next "hurricane"!!!!!!!

There's a certain high-profile weather forecaster who will be getting nervous that boards will go - where will he get his forecast?! I see a lot of the same points raised here in discussions pop up in his forecasts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 400Man

If boards goes…it will be your fault. A decent thread full of peoples interesting contributions deleted on the whim of some clown.

    Dead forum. Well done.

I hope Boards.ie will survive and believe it probably will. But as a hypothetical, if the entire forum were to close down, then the weather forum could probably make a transition to some free-standing forum similar to Net-weather (UK) or American Weather Forum. The main question would be how to rescue copy from here to there and who would be the administrator(s). I would say as a concept for this possibility, keep all roles the same as here now and see after the transition if any active moderators or thread starters had not come over … then see who could fill in for them going forward.

So in other words, the chances of boards disappearing may be a concern, but I don't think that has to imply that this weather forum (which is a fairly robust community) will also suffer the same fate, if so.

I have mentioned to people in contests and my own forecast thread that Irish Weather Online (facebook page) is a place to find out in any loss of information situation what is going on, to the extent that I know what's going on. Before anyone asks, I don't think IWO is a suitable place to transfer any boards.ie activity, nor in general is facebook a good choice, about half of boards members now probably are not active on facebook and don't wish to be. My involvement there is basically to repeat the forecast I post here, for facebook followers (some of whom may be on here too). Also, the administrator(s) should be residents of Ireland, so I am ruling myself out except in some brief transitional role possibly (to get it going) …

As I understand it, there's over a month to go before any decisions would need to be made, and I would suggest if it started to appear possible that action was required, we would form a committee of active members to plan out the transition. But let's hope that isn't needed. I enjoy various other parts of the Boards.ie community and would be quite sad to see it come to an end.

Why was the thread deleted? Was it to do with her presidential run? Very, very suspicious behaviour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 12,078 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

I'd imagine it was deleted because it became extremely vulgar and distasteful. I'd imagine there are other forums where you can happily to do an anonymous pile on for some woman you don't like. Bonus if she has mental health issues.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

The thread was closed before she formally announced she was going to try and get nomination for presidential run.

The thread was closed basically for reasons Cluedo said. That sort of thread had no place in the weather forum.

I would suggest Discord as an option. It's free can be set up extremely quickly and easily and you can set it up so It's more "forum-like" rather than chatroom based by using conversations. You can easily post images, screengrabs etc

Reddit would not really work for something like this forum.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,804 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

I wonder how the subscriptions/funding is going, the keepboardsalive link has not updated in well over a week been stuck on 73 days left since mid August or thereabouts, same with the subscription and funding %.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,767 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

I see discussions.ie being posted a lot on the main "where to next" thread about it, there's also gubudotie which was set up during the boards software move . gubudotie is on phpbb as was boards originally so seems like a decent fit if it could handle the volume. I don't have anything to do with either by the way.

I do use Reddit but dont really like it, just nowhere else with so much engagement. I think social media has moved on from bulletin board discussions to instant gratification on the likes of Ticktok instead etc these days.

I'll be sorry to see boards go as seems inevitable now.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭mcburns07

Agreed something like Discord could work, everything hinges on the willingness and alignment of the key posters moving to a new platform. The rest of us sheep can follow 😅

Have been thinking about this too, would be a shame to loose the Boards weather community, have my doubts that Boards will continue to be honest.

Netweather has a very good regional section including Ireland, I put up a couple of posts there recently to try it out. Very easy to post pics and gifs and links, nice user experience with a nice page display and can see what members are about visiting the page etc, a feature seriously lacking in the present Boards.

Just put up a new topic to try it out, very easy to use. Might be a contender for those interested , would be nice to have a bit more interaction with our neighbors across the water too .

No harm making contingency plans in case Boards does not continue.

Yeah not a bad shout at all, it’s just about having content and engagement really. Netweather is a significantly better user experience as you said and very well and long established.

All we really need is some agreement from the main contributors on where we will end up.
