Kerkez continues to be under utilised by the team. Against Palace, both Mac Allister and van Dijk ignored him and instead chose to pass inside or to the right flank.

PSG exposed our midfield issues last season, not closing down players quickly allows teams to hurt us especially if they have a player that can pick a pass when given time and space. Something is off with Mac Allister and until he recovers his form we have a hole to fill in midfield which exposes the back line. After a promising start last season, Curtis Jones has reverted to the player he was under Klopp and he's not an adequate replacement option. Endo and Nyoni are the fallback options and there's still no word on Bajcetic's return after his surgery in the summer.

Given the situation. moving Tyler Morton on in the summer was a mistake. He's playing well for Lyon and has become a fan favorite already, the club's media channel has been touting him as the midfielder they have been missing since selling Bruno Guimaraes to Newcastle. He does the dirty work, has prevented at least two goals from being conceded and also pings great forward passes. Lyon have lost one league game, which they had been winning 1-0 until Morton was dismissed in the 75th minute, after which they collapsed and conceded 3 goals. He hasn't registered any assists, but his incisive passes have unlocked the defense for the player that provides the assist. He also scored the winning goal away to Lille last weekend.

Agree. It's why the best teams evolve gradually. Liverpool of old brought in one or two every season. It avoids what we're seeing now. As you say it might be prudent to go back to basics, play the guys who know each other well until we get out of this slump. Up front Ekitike is performing. Maybe we bring on the likes of Wirtz, Chiesa and Ngumoah at the 60 minute mark to really put teams under the kosh.

Positives are that Kerkez is getting better, Ekitike is a threat, even Wirtz has shown small signs of improvement. It's going to take time.

Yes. He should be given Gravenberch time to get up to speed.

He's 22 and has nearly 200 professional games under his belt.

He is a young player but he isn't lacking in experience. To be fair to him though he has just moved from a team where he was the star name to a team where he isn't the main man.

That is a transition that a lot of players struggle with

Worrying that slot said he is not seeing much of a difference in performances this year to last just fine margins, hopefully its just for the press

Harvey Elliot is older than Wirtz. Only a couple of months but weird when you think about it.

The vibes are definitely off at the minute but with the amount of changes it was to be expected really.

We will probably be fine but ideas of us walking the league or the champions league were only put out there so people could point and laugh if we fail.

The big difference between this season and last season is that last season we able to stamp our authority on the game and implement our own game plan. We even switch mid game from a pressing team, to counter attacking team to a possession based team. This season it appears like we have no system.

Klopp made the same point when there were lapses as he was transitioning the team from the 100 mph high energy game to a more possession based setup.

    • The midfield isn't working at the moment which is exposing the back line on transitions.
    • Salah having license to not track back is an issue that teams have learned to exploit.
    • Poor concentration on defensive set pieces has been an issue since preseason.

Perhaps the defensive solidity out of possession was an aspect that Heitinga was responsible for. He was credited with working with some of the players on that aspect of the game.

Konate does not pass the eye test at all. He looks to me like a guy who’s been carrying a long term injury and playing through it for a while. He looks so stiff and heavy when he’s running, it’s like he doesn’t have a proper running rhythm, he just struggles through it. And it makes sense because he was never really given the proper time (bc of our lack of CB depth) to recover from those bad knee injuries he got.

He’s the best CAM in the league and he gets so much hate, doesn’t make any sense. Just weird behaviour to criticise him, especially as a liveprool fan.

    Aye....he'll be grand

Fully understand the lightweight argument, but it'll come. He's tight with the ball, and wiry enough to hopefully benefit from some protection from officials. Bit more application all round and they will turn into G&A

    On another note

Wirtz ain't the problem, trying to force him in isn't helping but Slot needs to go back to basics. Back to 4-3-3 is the first step.

The only problem with Wirtz, is the noise the media want to create around him. I’ve zero worries about him in the long run! Its not like the Nunez situation from a few years back when you would look at him at times and be trying to figure out why we just spent the guts of 80m on this lad.

When you look at last season, Slot basically had the same 11 week in week out in both the CL and PL. He took a hammering for the lack of rotation at times, but it did provide stability and confidence on the field. This season has almost been the exact opposite, its constant chopping and changing trying to figure out the right fit. We have had so many changes in personal, but we need to start getting something in place. I’d focus on bedding in our new fullbacks, Kerkez seems to be improving, but the constant rotation between Dom, Bradley and Frimpong is not doing any of them any good in the long run. Stick with either Bradley or Frimpong, and give them a run of games.

Then in midfield, it’s a bit of a mess currently, but a lot of this is down to the poor form of Mac and the fact Dom has played everywhere but his preferred role, then trying to shoehorn in a player like Wirtz into what our midfield looked like last is also causing issues. I’d love to see us trying that midfield 4 we used against City and Real (I think) last season, this weekend against Chelsea. Put both Wirtz and Dom together in the No.10’s with Salah and Ekitike ahead.

I think it’s a formation that could work going forward with personal we have. It will allow are 2 forward players move closer to the goal, which should give space for our full backs to finally get down the channels.

Having slept on it I'm not too worried, the team just needs time to gel. A couple of wins and a little more confidence and things will be fine.

Losing away to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, is not that surprising. They're both incredibly difficult places to go.

Hopefully the team peaks in April and May, unlike last year.

Yes, you can see Wirtz has quality. Nunez just didn't have it, sadly. I agree with you, there's been too much chopping and changing. Understandable though, as Slot looks for his best formation/11.

    What about a 4-2-3-1?

    Frimpong Konate Vvd Kerkez

    Grav Macca

    Salah Wirtz Szobo

    Ekitike/Isak

Possible rotation: Chiesa/Gakpo could come in for Salah or Szobo. It's not perfect but it would get most of our strongest players on the pitch and allow Wirtz to be part of that.

I think thats going to be the situation, and we'll have to get used to it. Last season was a continuation on the season before, with only Chisea brough in and Slots clear first 11 preference, we saw next to no change and it was rinse and repaeat from early doors. It came unstuck towards the end, as players fell out of form and teams had figured out how to hurt and neutralise us.

I think it could be another 2/3 months of varying form, going from brilliance to brutal within the same 30 minute period, and so on, until we find the right gears. As long as we can fight for, and scrape some results during this period, we should be ok.

Liverpool will be fine we have too many good players big win against Chelsea this weekend will ignite our season

Fully expect Wirtz and Isaac to come good but have strong reservations about Konate he certainly looks a liability

Has there been any update on Ekitike's injury?

Was a report that Ekitike reckons it was likely just cramp, but nothing since.

Really need a win on Saturday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,887 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

A draw and a solid performance would be fine. We haven’t won at the Bridge in 5 years. Its never an easy place for us to go, especially now when we have so many bedding in issues with all our new players. And questionable form of some of our experienced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,594 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

I'd take a draw now without a doubt. 16 points after 7 games would be a very good haul.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,525 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

They've only one CB available I think and Palmer is out as well.

I just want to some cohesion in our play for a full 90 minutes.

I'd like to see us defend in a low block and hit Chelsea on the break. I'm tired of watching everyone else do it to us!

Gravenberch looked worse that Wirtz when Klopp had him playing forward. Sometimes a players finds his place, as he has the attributes to do it, regardless of age.
