Trump once again called Jasmine Crockett a low IQ person. Crockett is a lawyer who passed the bar exam which is notoriously difficult and requires rigorous lengthy disciplined study. I'm pretty sure Trump couldn't pass the bar exam if his life depended on it. In fact, I'd be surprised if he managed to get through just reading the table of contents of any of the numerous books she had to study to qualify.

Reports that only Lindsey Halligan signed the Comey indictment. That suggests dissent in her office. 9 other prosecutors in the office were absent.

To convict requires all 12 jurors to agree. Comey could get 5 years if convicted. Question now is which judge will hear the case.

It seems that these charges may relate to when Senator Ted Cruz at a hearing said that ex Deputy FBI Andrew Director had said he leaked information, and that Comey had authorised it and was aware of it. Comey denied leaking. When asked if he was saying McCabe was lying, he said he (Comey) could only speak for himself.

It seems that Comey is saying that he did not authorise the leak. McCabe apparently is saying that he only told Comey of the leak afterwards.

This is so convoluted. How do they twist this into Comey lying? By saying that McCabe "lacked candour"

So the DOJ are basing their indictment on the aird of someone they say lacks candour.

And the leak in question is not even about the Trump/Russia investigation. It's about a leak about the Hillary emails investigation. The reason for the leak is speculated by CNN as relating to the fact that McCabe's wife was running for office as a Democrat, and was worried about the FBI being accused of being soft on Hillary Clinton.

Comey has just said "I am innocent...my heart is broken for the Department of Justice but I have great confidence in the Judicial system".

CNN however also showed a 2018 interview where Comey was reminded he released a memo to the NY Times. He replied that it was not classified, and that he was a private citizen at the time.

Hedging my bets , I'm not sure if Trump is either brilliant or has vastly over estimated his importance.

Putin has already made a fool out of him and he seems to finish the job himself

The Pentagon is terminating a decades-old advisory group that offered recommendations on how to support women serving in the military, including past suggestions that women needed properly fitting body armor and appropriate health care.

Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson said in a post on X on Tuesday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had decided to eliminate the group, formally called the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, saying that the committee, “focused on advancing a divisive feminist agenda that hurts combat readiness.”

“Secretary Hegseth has focused on advancing uniform, sex-neutral standards across the Department,” Wilson said.

Wilson has a history of controversial statements, including (link on this here):

The termination of the committee, originally created in 1951 as women were just beginning to take on increased roles in the military, is the latest move by Hegseth who has placed intense scrutiny on Pentagon diversity initiatives.

Reports about hundreds of US military officers are being summoned to a meeting by Hegseth. Has caused alarm. Nothing like this has happened in living memory.

Trump said that the meeting would at least partially be tied to a review of military equipment.

“We have the greatest equipment in the world,” he said. “A lot of generals want to be here. They’re also going to be touring equipment sites. They’re going to be talking about the newest weapons.”

It’s unclear if the order was for all general and flag officers — those with the rank of one star or higher — or just those in certain command or leadership roles

The meeting comes as the Trump administration has fired a slew of high-profile general and flag officers since taking office in January, in many instances due to Hegseth’s campaign against diversity-related issues, but often also for unspecified reasons. Hegseth also ordered the Defense Department in May to cut the number of four-star generals and admirals by at least 20%.

In a podcast appearance last summer, Hegseth said a third of the military’s senior officers are “actively complicit” in what he argued is a move towards politicization of the military. In a second podcast, he said senior officers are “playing by all the wrong rules” to cater to “idealogues in Washington, DC.”

I remember Haughey's trial for lying to the McCracken tribunal, which resulted in the collapse of the trial when a former minister said he should go to jail. Can that happen in the USA?

    It's unlikely.

The Irish courts have generally taken a very restrictive line on pre-trial publicity - they think there's a great risk that juries who have been exposed to publicity alleging or suggeting the guilt of the accused would find it hard to judge dispassionately, based only on the evidence given in court. (This, incidentally, is what's behind boards.ie's very strong line against commenting on cases before the courts.)

The US courts have traditionally taken a more robust view, reckoning that if jurors are told that they must disregard anything they have heard or read outside the court and must judge purely on the evidence, they will be able to do that. Hence it is vanishingly rare for US trials to be aborted on the basis that pre-trial publicity has unacceptably prejudiced a fair trial.

Lets see, a life of bankruptcies and sleaze rescued by a reality show…I’m afraid a diagnosis of brilliance left the building some time ago.

Here’s a story with an Irish flavour at the minute. James Comey has just been indicted by Lindsey Halligan and is represented by Patrick Fitzgerald of Scooter Libby fame. I suspect Halligan will outsource the case to actual prosecutors if she knows what’s good for her.

Having all those generals in one place is very risky. What if Russia and China find out where they are? Or is this the beginning of a purge of the military?

Missouri Republicans pass a law eliminating a seat the Democrats have held for 76 years.

There’s talk of lay-offs. If so, the survivors will get the message. You’d have to wonder whether Republicans ever want to really face voters again.

After yet another bizarre performance by Trump this week, this time drug-related, here are a few excerpts from a recent statement by the president of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology on Tylenol (acetaminophen):

Suggestions that acetaminophen use in pregnancy causes autism are not only highly concerning to clinicians but also irresponsible when considering the harmful and confusing message they send to pregnant patients, including those who may need to rely on this beneficial medicine during pregnancy.

“Today’s announcement by HHS is not backed by the full body of scientific evidence and dangerously simplifies the many and complex causes of neurologic challenges in children. It is highly unsettling that our federal health agencies are willing to make an announcement that will affect the health and well-being of millions of people without the backing of reliable data.

Acetaminophen is one of the few options available to pregnant patients to treat pain and fever, which can be harmful to pregnant people when left untreated. Maternal fever, headaches as an early sign of preeclampsia, and pain are all managed with the therapeutic use of acetaminophen, making acetaminophen essential to the people who need it. The conditions people use acetaminophen to treat during pregnancy are far more dangerous than any theoretical risks and can create severe morbidity and mortality for the pregnant person and the fetus.

Looks like they are looking at banning Mifepristone, the abortion pill, again. 63% of American abortions are by this drug. Anti abortion activists have been pushing the FDA to review its authorisation.

Robinson saying to his transitioning partner, in a text afterwards that he did it because "I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can't be negotiated out."

Please don't tell me that's not a left wing view, that Kirk's views on transgenderism was a form of hate. It's probably the single starkest distinction between Democrats and Republicans in the US. He obviously didn't expect his partner to cooperate with the police though.

You're confirming what Kimmel actually said, it wasn't a lie. MAGA twisting itself to make the guy some sort of 'leftist' whatever that means to MAGA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,982 ✭✭✭plodder

"some sort of 'leftist' whatever that means to MAGA" 😀

To MAGA it means Democrat supporter….

But, realistically it's more likely the most left wing faction of their supporters/voters

And now he's decided that Kitchen furniture and carpets are a threat to National security and has mposed a 50% tariff on imports.

He's also announced a 100% tariff on "branded pharmaceuticals" for any company that isn't building a factory in the US.

Being "trans" or "gay" does not automatically mean left. There is not a single other piece of evidence of this individual being "left". That doesn't mean he is not either but Kimmels point was that the main priority of MAGA was to make sure no one thought he was linked to them, not find out the actual truth. Kimmel did not say Robinson was MAGA. And still all we really know is that the shooter was unhinged and his hate of Kirk likely stemmed from personal reasons due to his lifestyle choice being constantly vilified by Kirk and people in his own family and community.

Flooding the ZONE continues . As Richard Nixon said “I know it’s not true but let’s us see him denying it”

Only if you're naive enough to actually believe those messages are real.

Being "trans" or "gay" does not automatically mean left.

You know that's not what I said. Supporting trans rights is a left-wing position in the US. That is not a controversial thing to say. Robinson is not trans. He supports trans rights. He's probably sitting in jail a bit bewildered that his trans partner doesn't share the view that it's okay to kill people who disagree with you.

And while we're arguing this utter absurdity, Trump is using the justice system to go after his political enemies. Funny how the word "fascist" has become so debased that when a proto fascist turns into a real one, it hardly creates a stir.

So, this is what it is reduced to. A trans supporting "good person", couldn't possibly do something that only the "bad people" do.

Throw away those black and white glasses that you're looking at the world through and have a nice weekend …

You're (perhaps deliberately) missing my point.

If you think those messages are genuine (it's not even to do with the trans stuff) then I have a bridge I can sell you. They scream AI-generated messages to everyone who's worked with AI.

Sometimes ridicule is the best form of attack, and this was a great example of it. Kudos to the artists.

Statue was installed by an artistic protest group ‘in honour of friendship month’. A statue of Donald Trump holding hands with Jeffrey Epstein has been removed from the National Mall in Washington, DC.

The 12ft bronze sculpture was installed on Tuesday with a plaque that read: “In honor of friendship month, we celebrate the long-lasting bond between president Donald J Trump and his ‘closest friend,’ Jeffrey Epstein”.

The sculpture was removed by the United States Park Police on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the Department of the Interior claimed it failed to comply with permit requirements in a statement to the Daily Mail.

Dunt think anytime is suggesting the guy didn't do it, but those messages are the only shred of evidence pointing towards a motive and to say they are "strange" is an understatement

They read like one of those scam messages telling you your bank account has been compromised.

Maybe the American education system really is that awful, but I have kids in the same age bracket as this guy and none of them talk like that, especially not among their peers.

And now we have a guy who shoots a bunch of immigrants but apparently scratched "Anti-ice" on bullets he didn't use, making then super easy to find.

Coming from an administration with a well established pattern of lying it all asks many more questions than it provides answers for.
