Connolly will not get elected. She will be back in the Dail with a lot more profile doing what she does best. Simon/Michael will be very afraid when she stands up to admonish the coalition of chaos.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

There was a general election less than 12 months ago and the electorate returned the incumbent government minus the greens. None of the left parties wanted to coalesce with FF & FG and the left parties couldn't find common ground to form a government themselves.

Therefore, we have a FF & FG partnership again with some independents supporting. Why have you such an issue with democracy? What do you think has changed so much in the last 12 months that the current government no longer has a mandate?

There will be another general election in 4 years. Maybe your energy would be best directed at uniting the left in that time so that they can pitch a credible alternative government?

If you say so! She probably won't stand again imo if she doesn't get elected.

And there we go……back to the fold…..back to shilling for FFG.

What was Maria Steen at with the last number of years? Why wasn't she canvassing support at council and Seanad level then? She's made a last minute run and reaping what she has sowed. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail comes to mind.

Ceann Comhairle approached too. Getting to desperation point now.

There is another reason why FFG and SF&Co might not want Steen on the ballot paper: optics. Most people will not meet the candidates for whom they vote. That means that they will get much of their knowledge about the candidates from meda appearances. (Ignoring the "opinionators" in the media who rarely have any worthwhile insights. The optics for FFG and Connolly with Steen in the race are highly problematic. One bald man and two mature ladies versus a smart candidate who looks younger and more telegenic than the other candidates.

    Regards…jmcc

I understand your frustration with being asked for further information but you'd do the discussion far more service by answering my questions than dodging them. If there's no substance to your post just acknowledge that...

In fairness, she was hardly high profile before she decided (was convinced??) to run for president. So her profile will be higher after it.

She only got 9% in the 2020 election.

I realise that she was leas ceann comhairle but outside Leinster house and the political journalists did anyone care??

There are many indepents and smaller party TDs with a much higher profile.

Now that I think about it Boyd Barrett would have been a much better candidate for "the left"...

Is there a list of the 18 who nominated Maria Steen?

so did the HR brothers, and they still intend to AFAIK, but…

Completely irrelevant as presidential candidates are only allowed to be candidates if a handful of politicians allow them on the ballot paper.

We had an American as president for 14 years and another president for 14 years who was born in a jurisdiction where people are not allowed a vote.

    Farcical and completely undemocratic.

And what's the news today. . . Maria Steen likely to be denied a chance to run because the lefties in government don't like her pro-Catholicism.

Last night there was talk of asking Charles Ward

Charles Ward who has been campaigning with Connolly….

Desperation took hold a while ago I suspect!

    This times a hundred..

If you plan on running as an independent in ANY election you need to have been out on the ground putting in the work for a long long time in advance.

Appearing out of nowhere a few weeks before the election and then complaining that you couldn't get enough support is just ridiculous.

Walking in to a council ( or in to a Td/Senators office) , cold , days before an election and expecting them to vote for you after a 15 minute presentation is political naivety of the highest order.

Well there is precedent for someone to nominate while supporting someone else.

I would have thought it a given that the CC would not have a nomination for obvious reasons.

The truth? That you’re an FFG supporter, that you couldn’t countenance a government that doesn’t have one or the other or both in it? That’s the truth about you.

You are around long enough to know though that their collective vote has only being going in one direction. They can’t even put together a government between the two of them anymore without support from others. The best way to keep the little scam going was to convince Labour or Social Democrats or even put FG in opposition and do a deal with SF if FF were really ruthless about it. Going cap in hand to the Tipperary gombeen was a serious misstep and a sign of fatal weakness in Micheál Martin. Why didn’t Martin nominate Bertie Ahern for this position? Bertie Ahern would have won this presidential contest. He has all the skeletons from the past but they’ve mostly been laid bare and he would have been the dominant political figure in the race. Martin didn’t want Bertie I reckon because Bertie is 10 times the politician he ever was and ever will be. Martin is weak, afraid of being overshadowed by Ahern and that weakness is also why he did the grubby deal with Lowry instead of the harder work doing a deal with a real party to form a government.

The collective opposition knows what they need to do now to get FFG out. SF, Lab, SDs working together, get a few others around them if needed and they’ll bang it out.

It’ll hit hard for you a life long FFG voter. It’ll be good for the country though, for housing, for health, for infrastructure and for a less divisive sectional interests approach.

This Presidential race and campaign is a pilot project and an opportunity to prepare and train for the real coalition that will form the next government.

Peadar Toibin talking about a groundswell of support for Steen...what a pile of nonsense! Laughable listening to him.

You think we need American-style Presidential campaigns where prospective candidates spend years building teams , garnering support and raising funds?

'Last minute' fits the job IMO. You're available and want the job, try for a nomination.

I think he's right about anger among voters if she doesn't get on the ballot.

She will, hopefully, be denied entry to the race by means of the democratic process that exists in this state.

If she is unhappy, she, the iona institute, gript, and the rest of the growing far right, can contest the next general election. Get elected, and change the rules. Its all very democratic.

Iv said it a few times here, and elsewhere - I consider Steen to be at least, Christian Right - at worst, she would have the backing of the growing far right in this country. As toothless as the presidency is, I do not want to see a regressive candidate like steen on the ballot.

You can call me undemocratic if you wish, honestly its completely nonsensical. But go ahead if you wish. Steen and her Right/Far-Right/Christian-Right supporters have gotten a lot of air time out of this. And I just have to accept that, just as with Trump, and Farage, she has captured a mood among disaffected voters. But she, and her platform, are retrograde. Iv seen lots of commentary on the fact she was was against marriage equality and repealling the 8th - for the record, Iona is also against

    • Surrugacy
    • Adoption rights of same sex couples
    • Civil Partnerships
    • Euthinasia
    • Sperm Donation
    • Divorce

To put it differently, they are against every single piece of progress this country has made in the last 25 years. So if you, a democrat, want to see this lady and her bloc, whip up support from evangelicals, regressives, the far right, and everyone with an alt right angle to grind - then please be the democrat you claim to be. Support those parties who share these views, vote in the next election, get into power, and change what you wish

As for me, il be delighted not to have Maria Steen anywhere near a ballot paper for as long as remains possible

Sic semper tyrannis - thus always to Tyrants

That’s what they’re doing and that’s what has FFG pishing themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,209 ✭✭✭✭L1011

There's precedent for making yourself look incredibly silly in doing so, yes.

It is not rational to nominate someone for something when supporting someone else. It is even less rational to do so when they are of a completely different political persuasion to you.

Thanks, I am disgusted that any one of them would lend support to someone who opposed same sex marriage and opposed a woman's right to choose.

I can only hope she doesn't get to 20 nominations.🤞
