Subtle in the face of live streaming genocide...no thanks! His second term was a master class in my view - given his immense popularity your opinion is in the minority I suspect.

He's not but he's entitled to that opinion. Can you enlighten us on these 'rumours' and the evidence the 'rumours' are based on?

So is Steen a non runner?
it would have livened things up anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,767 ✭✭✭MFPM

Steen looks to be stuck unless 3 people step forward. Poor Gript are losing their sh!t. Steen has had years to get organised but last minute decides to go for it and expects the doors to just open for her. There's a real bang of the entitlement of these Catholic reactionary types - the power and influence they once had is long diminished but they haven't fully reconciled with that.

Interesting the difference with Sheridan, none of the same hysterics over his failure although he left it far too late too.

He just made it up. Some desperate stuff from FFG fanboys trying to smear Connolly any way they can. They’re worried about her and about SF, Labour. SD and others aligning as they did. It’s the beginnings of a real threat to FFG’s stranglehold on power in this country.

F the Far right. This is a real substantive possible coalition forming to represent people of conscience and genuine progressive principles and values in this country. The rotten gombeen pact of FFG and hangers on not fit for purpose to govern this country. We need an alternative but not the copycat alternative of division and rancour that took over in the US or in the UK, we can go straight to a quality solution.

A coalition that FFG would be genuinely worried about because it will leave them for dust in terms of performance and delivery. This Presidential race and the coalition around the Connolly candidacy is just the beginning of the process.

    A bang of entitlement?

The system is corrupt . . . designed by an American (De Valera) to keep Irish citizens from becoming candidates for president and to keep the presidency in the ownership of politicians and their lackies.

    It's undemocratic.

Aubrey McCarthy makes 18 just on the radio now saying he'd sign.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,767 ✭✭✭Bishop of hope

Are you the poster that had a dig about SF living in FF/FG supporters heads? Kettle, pot, black comes to mind.

A presidential election is about electing a person to be head of state, Labour have had two, it's really sent them to the top of the political pile alright. It's a position that changes nothing politically in reality.

Jesus, the west's awake! Apart from the doubts of Devalera himself, can you name anyone who's been President or a Presidential candidate that hasn't been an Irish citizen?

are there another 2 backers? While I’m not a supporter of her views I’d like to see her on the ballot. The current field is less than inspiring IMHO.

Ah playing it down now just in case she wins, makes a change from announcing that “there’s rumours that it’s already over for Connolly…etc…lol”.

The days of FFG and cronyism and gombeenism are numbered. Get that in your head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,767 ✭✭✭Bishop of hope

Democracy is democracy, I have 1 vote. If CC wins you'll get no argument from me on the result. If the current SF ever get into power, the days of gombeenism and cronyism are just beginning! And I never said it was over.

Maria Steen shouldn't be on the ballot cos if so she may be able to air opinions I disagree with

F*ck me - wholly unsurprising however

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,871 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

ha ha. SF with the coalition they can form can bring a genuine alternative to the gombeen sectional interests divisive shyster FFG pact, and that’s what you are most concerned about.

That most recent grubby deal you’ve done with Lowry is going to hurt you. A grubby deal symbolic of the rot and corruption in FFG. Get out.

This "coalition" will be a "game-changer" I imagine. Keep the faith, Tiochaidh ar la.

I wonder who the more right wing votes will vote for if Steen isn't on the ballot paper? Would they be inclined to give a big f u to the government and vote Connelly?

I really think MM would make an outstanding dictator.

Wow, I never knew this very much ceremonial position, albeit important position had so much power and influence on who we elect to govern us. Maybe you don't realize, but FF/FG are not a dictatorship. People elected them in a democratic vote. Your position here reads anti-democratic, while whingeing about democracy!

We don't need an alternative…we need democracy….that is all…democracy decides who we elect! And unless I am mistaken, democracy has always elected in Ireland!

You're 50 or 60 pages late, a few on here claim he already is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,871 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

    Yes FFG shill, it will.

You have no faith in anything bar looking after your cronies. A properly organised opposition will put you out. Your support has dwindled over recent decades to the point where you had to get into bed together and now in the most recent government formation you took the easy road with a grubby deal with Lowry and company. You’ll pay for that. You know it’s coming.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,143 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Would FFG be better off at this stage if Steen gets a nomination?

I can’t see how they wouldn’t but they’re just being true to their scorpion nature in doing everything to frustrate her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,871 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

    Wow indeed 😆

We do need an alternative to the corrupt, lazy, divisive and sectional interests FFG pact and it will be a democratic alternative. You’re basically saying that any alternative to FFG in government is undemocratic; you’re the anti democratic one here. Your days are numbered in power and you know it. Writing has been on the wall a long time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,516 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

It'll be a travesty is Steen doesn't make it. Surely she deserves to make the ballot, has been the most impressive candidate over the last 24hrs by a country mile!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,632 ✭✭✭✭walshb

My days are numbered? You sound like a mercenary. I said no such thing that any alternative to FF/FG is undemocratic, but I am not surprised this is how you want to read it. Your attitude here is like espousing a dictatorship…..I this, I that, my way or the high way!!!

If FF/FG are democratically elected into power, like they have been, we are working as a democratic country, and long live this way. If an alternative party, or parties are elected democratically, we are working as a democracy!!!

There is no writing on any walls…..you really have no clue about how people in Ireland democratically elect our government!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,767 ✭✭✭Bishop of hope

Ah there you go with the stick. Can you not have a conversation without accusation?

It hasn't happened yet, you're not wrong about the changes in support levels for the two big party's, moreover FF who are only a shadow of the powerhouse they were. I was actually a FF voter till Berties antics changed my mind. I've voted for FG, FF in general elections all my life. Labour got my number one in a few elections with just one candidate in my constituency who I believe was a great politician. I've voted for a great old SF man up the road from me in CoCouncil elections.

But I understand your frustration and impatience with waiting for your dream to come true.

The point stands. More SF voters voted against the 8th Referendum than FG voters.

It doesn't look good for FFG is nobody else gets on the ballot. The power swap looks like they want total control over proceedings. HH will probably win and be the most uninspiring president in decades. I doubt we will hear from her for 7 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,002 ✭✭✭✭markodaly

Catherine Connolly supporters are getting very excited. Bookies have her 3rd favourite. :)

Somewhat more relevantly, she doesn't appear like she will get on the ballot because members of the Oireachtas who have been constitutionally empowered to vet candidates don't agree with her.

There are more than enough others out there to put Steen on the ballot.
