I have been thinking about getting a HT for years and I am going to take the plunge. I am 33 and my marriage has recently ended so I could do with the confidence boost I hope getting this done will give me.

I haven’t done a massive amount of research on this but the one thing I am set on is getting it done in Ireland. I do have a friend that went to Turkey with good results but I am too wary of getting a botch job with some many clinics there to choose from. I appreciate getting it done here is probably three or four times more expensive and money is very much an issue for me (will need to get a loan or look at the finance offered by the clinics to fund this) but I just want to get it done here for peace of mind and convenience.

I sent enquiries to both Dr. Nel and HRBR who have replied offering initial consultations in the next few weeks. I suppose I am just curious if anyone on here has been to either and their experiences. I am worried about the side effects of the medication that Dr. Nel is insistent on being take post-procedure but I’m hoping my fears will be allayed with the consultation.

I would love to hear any feedback on either clinic or indeed if there is anywhere else in Ireland that I haven’t thought of. Thanks.

Haven't got a HT but I take finasteride and have no issues at all.

I was on Fin and Minox tablets as prescribed by Dr Nel and had side effects (the usual that people complain about), and then went onto topical and found all the sides disappear, but also found my hair was thicker than on tablets.

Dr Nel is very strict and will even specify the SPECIFIC BRAND to get for each medication, and go for that initially to see how you get on, but know that if you do experience side effects that topical will work also, perhaps even better (don't mention that to Dr Nel or he will flip)

As to where you can source topical today I'll leave that to someone else to answer as I don't need to renew my batch for a while yet.

Not true. I used topical minoxidil for years and it did nothing. And I used a generic brand of finasteride for 4.5 years (i asked my GP for it) and it didnt do anything either. Finally went to see dr. nel and I switched to the brand recommended by dr. nel and in a few months I started to see some regrowth. Just my 2 cents..

    Hi,

I went to Dr. Nel in July, haven't decided whether to go with him or not yet. Will start on the Proscar though. He also recommended Nizoral & a hair roller device. Anyone using Nizoral & the roller, if so how do you find it please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,342 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

nizoral was very harsh on my hair, turned it into very dry straw basically

I was told the same but only use nizoral once to twice a week. No dermarolling.

Also it can’t just be Proscar. It has to be a particular brand of Proscar. It has to be a particular brand manufactured in Ireland. Even if this particular brand he recommends is manufactured in another country it can’t be used he says. He gets you to take a photo of the box.

Anyone know any pharmacies in south Dublin that sell Irish made proscar? I have a prescription for finasteride but got the generic stuff last time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,342 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

that all sounds a bit mad. Only a tiny fraction of finasteride users must be taking that specific type/brand, they can’t be the only ones that the drug works for.

He says there are brands that don’t work at all. He showed me and got me to take pictures of them so I don’t buy them. He said patients of his were taking these brands and hair loss continued and when they switched to the brand he does recommend the hair loss stopped.

maybe he is into to something, he is a doctor and I am not. I’m on Sons, and I’m not sure if it works or not.

Anyone experience a shedding phase on fin? I am almost 7 months on it and think I am having a small shed. Can see a good few small hairs in the towel after a shower. Heard this is good as these are the miniaturised hairs as they are a lot smaller than my actual hair length.

Has anyone went to Sule hair in Istanbul? A friend went a couple of years ago and seemed to get decent results. I'm considering going myself before the end of the year.

I believe I did around 7 months, which was recently… a lot of small hairs, which seemed unusual

yeah Nizoral makes the hair look very thin.
I use Nizoral twice in a week. After applying Nizoral, I use regular shampoo and I have found that it helps. Else hair becomes too light and straw like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,111 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Well it was true for me 😀

I was on a topical mixture of Minox and Fin rather than just topical minox so that might be why

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,111 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

Regarding Nel and recommendation of specific brands.

Sounds like someone who has shares in the Proscar manufacturer 😆 🤣

I also used Nizoral for a while and it ended up tangling my hair due to dryness and in effect made more hair fall out when trying to brush it

Oh two other things Ill mention about going for the unshaven option for a hair transplant (my own experience):

    1. You can go for the unshaved option (if it's offered and which I opted for). I asked the surgeon if the outcome is as good as the shaved option and the answer was "yes. it takes longer and costs a little more but the result is the same". I read a load of sh1te on reddit about you not getting as good a result.
    2. If you go for the shaved option, you can shed your existing hair due to the trauma of the op on the scalp so not only did I shed the new hair, but existing hair as well. Had I know that you could shed existing hair around the implants, I wouldnt have gone the shaved option.

Hope that helps for anyone who is interested in that option.

I believe HTBR allow a non shaved head for FUT but not for FUE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,401 ✭✭✭HBC08

Having done both I'd be very wary of non shave.

As you say the trauma can cause the native hairs to fall out.If they are miniaturised or beginning to miniaturise then they are unlikely to grow back. Thus your HT could be pointless in that you have a net loss of actual follicles than before the procedure.

I had a very small (400 graft) procedure done as non shave. It was the same doctor who had done 2 large previous HTs so I trust him and he knows my head well.

My advice for what it's worth is thread very carefully when it comes to this.Arm yourself with the facts and consult with your doctor in detail before making any decisions.

This makes no sense to me, unfortunately. If the hair is receding anyway, (and youre not taking the medication) what difference does a shaved versus unshaved procedure make? You'll permanently lose the hair either way eventually...
