When you're dealing with a cult, you have to expect they will never see reason, or show any interest in hearing a stable viewpoint.

They're cultists that exist in the reality of their God, who's name is Donald Trump. There's no room for debate, there's no room for decency, there's no room for truth, there is only room for devotion of the dear leader, even if it means warping reality to please their idol.

Trying to get a Trump supporter to see reason or basic truth won't work, their minds are gone for good, they are too tied to his reality and live in it.

You may as well be trying hold back a tsunami with a kitchen towel as trying to debate or reason with a Trump supporter, it just can't be done. They neither care for reality or truth, they abhor debate, they dismiss fact and reason openly and are proud of this. They only exist to care about what the dear leader wants and says, and will defend to the last his reality which is now theirs.

Trump is their God now, and the faithful believe unconditionally. You're not dealing with rational people, your dealing with a cult who have drank the Kool Aid and went back for more.

This is the product of decades of the Christian nationalist war on education and decency manifest. Stupid people driven by hate find purpose in religious outlet, and that outlet right now in America is the full on worship of Donald Trump. You simply won't come between said people and their faith in their God.

There's no point in attempting debating or reasoning with a Trump supporter, they'll never hear nor respect your side of the argument, because their God won't allow it.

And now that that is the case, it means that anything that anything or any excuse is justified in protecting him. Trump could beat a baby to death with a hammer in the Oval Office, and his supporters would not only be not horrified, they would justify it by saying he prevented a Marxist from growing up to destroy America. When that's the level of devotion, there's simply no point in debating them in good faith, they have none.

Deplorables was too kind a word. Degenerates is a far better word, and they are.

All the talk about 'political violence is wrong' when the entire point of the 2nd Amendment is to allow for political violence to protect 'freedom'.

The right wing in america are very pro political violence. They march about with their guns on display in 'open carry' states to show exactly how prepared they are to shoot people to defend their political views.

The left use words and discourse and protest.

The right use violence. Force, cohersion.

In fairness at least two of those posters do have some weird values in general when it comes to things like Ukraine. So I'm pretty sure there's little that they wouldn't be good with.

Did Voltaire say he would defend to the death the right for someone to shout "fire" in a crowded theatre?

    Freedom of speech has limitations.

Free speech absolutists are hypocrites or fools.

Where is the limit to freedom of speech to be drawn? I think people who engage in public discourse who are deliberately lying and knowingly making false claims are actively harming society. The right to free speech should be the right to free speech in good faith.
There should be no absolute right to lie, commit fraud and defamation, to spread disinformation.

One might say that this gives a malign government the ability to shut down free speech by claiming that it is bad faith speech. But we're already at the point where a government that does not act in good faith has no respect for free speech of any kind, and the only way such a government can get into power, is by having abused a system that did nothing to prevent it from campaigning based on lies and disinformation in the first place.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Remember all those forestry workers sacked in February in a big blaze of MAGA glory? Well most are back working (in March) - but many didn’t return when invited and moved to other industries - even Biden had stopped recruitment of new staff throughout his term - and workers are feeling the pinch now with increased workloads and smaller crews.
Funny though- I had to go hunting for this information - plenty on the sackings but fewer articles around the reinstatement of workers
We knew all of the massacre back in the spring was a bit of showmanship - but I’d very much like to get a status update on all the workers impacted throughout the civil service job murders and just how many were taken back on and what was the cost to the state in terms of firing and rehiring and compensation?

I know the world has moved on to other things but I said at the time, this was illegal, pointless and would only ultimately cost the government money in terms of compensation and lost salary claims - I’ve seeing nothing yet to say this isn’t the case

Trump got banned from twitter for incitement to violence after January 6th

People like Trump can just buy their way out of consequences for their actions. He went off and created his own platform, and Musk bought twitter so he could allow the right wing lunatics back in, and this essentially swung the election for Trump in 2024.

The amount of free speech you have in the US is intrinsically linked to how much money you have.

    You know what?

I just wish Killsafe and MA and others would just have the balls to come out and say what they really are thinking.

"So what. Trump is being a petulant A-hole, but f*** it, the left deserve it.

I don't care if it is hypocritcal. I don't care that he lies through his teeth. I don't care that he is creaming in money off his position. I don't care about the average Joe Bloggs.

I only care that he winds the left up and I just want him to continue pi$$ing people off because that's what matters to me"

I would actually respect that more, instead of this mealy-mouthed, pi$$ poor attempts at debating.

I sort of get the vibe that a lot of these posters were the types who were praising Putin when he started his earlier crackdowns. Eg I recall people who were praising him for the LGBT targeting cause it was protecting vulnerable young minds. Now Trump will try to kick off some similar things against the LGBT community and we'll have the same types praising that.

Just to set the record straight: Voltaire did not say

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

That was said by someone else (Evelyn Beatrice Hall in 1906) who was explaining or defending Voltaire's views.

And the remark about the right to shout "fire" in a crowded theatre was made by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in a US Supreme Court case.

Free speech should be the default position, subject to 2 main exceptions: direct incitement to voilence and creating imminent danger to life.

Exactly.. As long as the people being attacked are their "enemies" they don't care about the methods used

They is no Right or Wrong , there is no Truth or Lies, they is only Them and Us.

And as long as " Us" are sticking to" Them" they'll ignore, excuse and justify anything and everything that happens.

Trump is obsessed by ratings, his Bible, comes from his days at "The Apprentice" as renewal of his contract was related to same, those funds kept him personally afloat during 6 bankruptcies and Trump Inc., on its knees.

It doesn't really matter who said those things, the principle still applies.

And I disagree with your assertion that those are the only two limitations to free speech.

You are not allowed to defame people. I cannot go out into the street and accuse my neighbour of being a prostitute and then say 'It was just free speech'

There are limitations on what businesses can say in marketing material. You cannot say 'Eat Chocolate every day and your teeth will be white and you'll lose that excess weight'

There should be limitations on what the media can say on public airwaves. The media should be regulated and we should not allow them to deliberately lie or spread disinformation. If for example RTE radio's news bulletin announced that Sinn Fein have been meeting with members of the recently reconstituted IRA army council and it turns out that never happened, it would be an outrageous abuse of the public airwaves and they should be forced to retract those claims or face reprucusions

Trump Derangement Syndrome is not an actual thing

    you do know that, right?

And Trump lied about not being involved in Project 2025 during his election campaign.
He lied and completely disavowed his manifesto that he has been very faithful since the election, because he knew if he was honest about what he was actually going to do, he would not have been elected.

That so many people were dumb enough to believe his lies, thats another question

    '

"You are not allowed to defame people. I cannot go out into the street and accuse my neighbour of being a prostitute and then say 'It was just free speech'"

This is something you can be sued for in the US, and is difficult to prove, unless it's really egregious (E. Jean Carroll v. Trump comes to mind.) It's not a criminal offense, at worst you'll be out some money.

You don't think this thread is a cult? It's just the same posters bashing Trump every day and thanking each other.

It is very much a thing. The obsession with Trump, a man who has virtually zero power in reality because everyone can sue everyone in the US and everything ends up getting blocked, is frightening.

Yes, defamation is an agreed limitation on free speech, I was replying to someone who said there should be only 2 limitations on free speech, and defamation was not one of them.

This is a thread about the things Trump is doing. What else are we supposed to talk about in here?

You could come in and post some of the positive things he is doing… maybe he petted a puppy or something.

But a majority of Americans believe that the media are the enemy of the people: https://floridadaily.com/poll-shows-majority-of-americans-consider-news-media-enemy-of-the-people/

People don't realise just how much the media are despised in the US.

Well, the thread itself isn't, obviously, but I'm sure you know what I mean. And I said that in response to a poster who claimed that Trump's supporter's are in a cult / a cult.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,803 ✭✭✭randd1

Comments about Donald Trump in the Donald Trump thread? Who'd have thought it.

I swear these MAGA cultists have no common sense grip on reality whatsoever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭Ceathran

Only it's not comments. It's non-stop bashing and insulting of Trump.

Ah, the good old 'TDS!!!!!' accusation.

There's only one side that is actually guilty of TDS, it's the one making gold statues of him and dressing themselves in clothes with his face on it or flying Trump flags on their trucks.
