    Hi

A question for our experts !

Living in D15 and was recently upgraded by Virgin Media to fibre broadband to the outside of the house.

Still have a cable connection to my VMbroadband router. Does that mean service is poorer than on fibre for house to router.

Paying €70 per month to VM.

Recently got a text from Sky offering fibre broadband for half the price of VM.

Does anyone know if Sky will carry out the final part of the fibre connection to their router or do I need to request Virgin to do the final connection first.

Anything I should consider regarding Sky broadband as want to keep my phone line.

Might use Sky in order to get a reduction from VM.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Its up to Sky to arrange the installation through VM and their installers (usually contractors).

Interesting. Current deal with VM ends early November. Might be able to use Sky to get a decent price from Virgin.

    Thanks

Anyone experience with Pure Telecom? For 40 a month I can get 1gb fibre. They are coming in the cheapest behind sky.

Any issues with them blocking vpns or anything? I would go with sky but two people I know have had issues with them, weird buffer issues on Netflix and what's app not loading even though they are both on FTTH.

I don't have any issues with Pure blocking VPNs or anything -= I did have an issue with their CS at the start when my line got damaged - it took making a format complaint before anyone would actually do anything about it.

I've also had Sky before that and never had any issues with Netflix or WHatsApp - maybe that's related the their recent issues around weird routing/ UK IP address assignment.

I've used my own hardware too

Does anybody here know how to get Virgin Media to respond to 'no service' (Broadband and TV)for nearly 3 weeks now.

I have told them what the issue is (a broken cable between my house and a neighbour) but nobody is doing anything to fix the issue. All I get from the Virgin support desk is 'we'll send someone out and text you beforehand'

So far 1 text and no technician showed up.

Status now is a technician is 'scheduled ' to attend but no txt confirming so I dont believe it

3 WEEKS with nothing happening is WAY WAY too long.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how to get Virgin to fix the problem

I spent months trying to get a similar issues fixed with VM. Every dept will wash their hands with it. Just leave them if you can.

On Virgin Media at the moment, but it's crept up to €93 a month (TV+broadband package).

So simply looking at what's listed on switcher.ie I'm tempted to get Vodafone's "1 Gigabit Full Fibre SIRO Broadband" which is just €40 after 6 months. All we really want is broadband (don't want TV or fixed line phone).

Any reason why I should not go for that Vodafone offer? Is there anything better?

thinking of switching ftom VM to SKY. sky say they will have to run a new cable into the house..?? to get gigabit BB and tv

is this a big deal? and/or messy? much digging etc?

That really depends on where they need to run the cable from.

Question for those in the know.

Currently have Vodafone fibre 500mb in the home looking to change it to sky fibre 1gb. I'm out of contract with Vodafone.

My question is "is the product the same?".

I'm based in Dublin and Vodafone upgraded the connection to fibre 2 years ago and installed new ports at the point of entry to my home. A broadband checker says I can get up to 2gb fibre at my address.

    TIA

Does anyone know if the connectors on telephone poles and ESB poles are optical fibre connectors for broadband?

Open Eir is now available in my development and considering options... Do each broadband supplier have their own installation team or does a single company handle it regardless of the supplier you choose ?

Looking at some messy jobs bringing the necessary wiring into my neighbouring apartments.. hence the question..

Would anyone be able to shed some light on what the installation involves also out of curiosity? I notice a little white plastic box above their doors.

No open eir handle the installation regardless of ISP and open eir contract out to KN Circet usually for installations, so it will be the same as your neighbours.

They will bring the fibre cable in and usually terminate it inside in a NTU white box on the wall and then connect a short fibre patch cable to an ONT, another white box, that will be installed next to it.

    Like this - https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualIreland/s/NjV8gUDFhm

You then connect an Ethernet cable from the ONT to the ISP router or your own router.

You can choose whichever ISP you want, they’ll all use the open eir line back to the exchange/handover where it’ll be then brought on to the ISPs core network.

Looking to order some broadband. For parents who are very rural, luckily they are covered by the NBI so can get 500Mb fibre from a number of providers.

Just wondering if anyone has spotted any good deals to note or if any providers are better than others, or are there any to be avoided, or ones that provide better hardware before I sign them up please?

My virgin media broadband 500 has gone too expensive 60 per month from 45 and now wondering who else to try for Dublin.

Someone mentioned Siro or 5 G or Vodafone.

You need to know which FTTP access network is available to you. There’s open eir, SIRO, NBI. You can check here -

    https://www.comreg.ie/broadbandchecker/

Once you know, you’ll have a choice of multiple ISPs to choose from.

open eir - eir, Digiweb, Pure Telecom, Sky, Vodafone etc.

SIRO - Vodafone, Sky, Digiweb, Pure Telecom etc.

I am with Digiweb at moment payment has gone up to €49 for 500mpbs with telephone free UK calls and local calls.

So rang Pure telecom they can do same for €40 was €35 until I asked for free UK calls, they send modem out and I set it up, my concern is I have smart plugs ,heating controls all connected to Alexa so I asked is there a simple way to connect to modem, " No , you will have to reconnect each device separately", this has put me off, is this right?

You can just set the WiFi name (SSID) to the same one as you were using with the Digiweb router, all the devices should just connect.

Should be similar process to this for all routers -

If Digiweb let you keep the router you wouldn’t even need to switch it out if you didn’t want to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,737 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

So if I can keep the Digiweb router and leave it connected would I need to adjust any settings for Pure telecom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,171 ✭✭✭greasepalm

When you leave Digiweb they will want their stuff back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭NotShero

You might need to just add the PPPoE username and password for Pure Telecom instead of Digiweb but you mightn’t have to.

VLAN ID 10 is needed for all ISPs in Ireland so that will already be set.

Here are the PPPoE details for Pure Telecom in case -

    Username - puretelcom@puretel.ie

    Password - broadband1

I've no problem them coming to collect the stuff.

I was with Vodafone 1GB fiber broadband out in the countryside. €45 a month for 6 months and then I think €55 for 6 months.

Contract was just up and I managed get them down to €40 per month for the next 12.

    Haggle hard.

Might need to call it quits with Digiweb, the peak time performance has gotten shocking here.

The first screenshot is on Wi-Fi, the second is from a wired device.

That is shocking! That's not happening for me personally on Digiweb and is very consistent, have Digiweb offered to investigate it for you?

I haven't been in touch with them to be honest, maybe I should give them a chance to sort it at least. It's only during peak hours, I can see from the UniFi logs that it started around 20:10. Last night it stopped around 22:15.
