So does anyone know if SSE or Yuno have increased their prices recently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,824 ✭✭✭bren2001

EI are not going to give you advice on how to terminate your contract with BGE. They will handle the switch but they cannot comment on exit fees etc.

The staff you get on the phone can't confirm no price increase this winter unless instructed (allowed) to do so by management. There's no reason not to believe what was reported in the media but its unlikely you'll get their staff to confirm it either.

It's literally stated on the Electric Ireland website in the sign up process that you don't have to contact your current supplier, that they handle it. You'd think their operators would have a basic understanding of what's involved.

Well I wanted to be sure so spoke with Bord Gais and it is correct you don't need to speak with them, I did get a case number just in case and also ran through the old numbers of my current plan vs the new ones

So my unit rate at moment is 25.65cent and standing charge 218.55 and its going to 29.12c per unit and 244.77 standing charge. Unit rate includes vat and discount so based on my usage last year of 2889 units my bill wouuld go from €959.57 to €1086.04.

So hope that helps some like myself who had these questions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,206 ✭✭✭gussieg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,206 ✭✭✭gussieg

I found a page somewhere on line to sign up to the bwg deal I think I found it through ask about money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,145 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

the link has been posted here many times but gets lost with all the chatter

the fixed price ends in sept and folks are free to leave or take up next years bwg deal if they bother

I changed my Mam's gas and electricity to BG from Energia on Sept. 6th. I'm thinking now to move her to EI due to the price increase. Am I obliged to wait until 26th to allow the 20 days between switching suppliers?

Energia sent "One last offer" email yesterday to cancel the switch of a google nest / smart bulb package… I laughed at the prospect.

I was looking at EI smartplan but couldn't see a price for microgen.

I know you have to have a smart meter for Yuno, but are they smart plans or some ordinary plans? I don't want moving to a smart plan and not be able to move back...but with low usage their cashback offer would be the cheapest for me at the moment....electricity only plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭delerium1

One last question on the BWG deal, if you sign up do they acctivate your smart meter. I have been through the switching form and I notice that they ask if you have a smart meter. I want to switch but I don't want to go on the smart tariff. ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,951 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

I was thinking the same, do I click yes or no to smart meter question when it's unactivated or does it relate to readings being taken automatically?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,145 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

the smart meter question is relating to the meter being read remotely, if you select a non smart plan it won’t get activated

@adelcrowsmel check the yuno website and see what plans they offer 👍

Yuno is exclusively a smart meter provider, they will activate it if it's installed or have meter installed if none present.

Yuno is Pinergy, Pre-Pay electricity by subversion. They will take massive estimated bills for first few months under guise of determining your usage & then level pay for rest of contract.

    From Yuno FAQ:

Each month, you pay for your electricity before you use it based on a usage Prediction (kWh)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭Buffman

As mentioned fully 100% smart only and be prepared for the initial 'prediction' based estimated bills for a big money pulled out of thin air that you'll get, you'll eventually get your money back as rolling credit but you're essentially 'loaning' them it for months, grand if you can afford to do so, not grand if you can't, and you'll have to watch it like a hawk and specifically ask for the full refund due when you leave.

There are specific sign up pages for the different deals, so unless you're in the wrong switching form that shouldn't happen. However there have been reports of Flo 'accidentally' putting people on the wrong 'smart' plans activating the smart meter MCC that can't be reversed, so screenshot everything and maybe follow up with a call if you want to be 100% sure.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

Thanks guys for confirming, I'll be staying clear so!

Hi guys. I’m under contract with BGE for electricity (32%) since June. Now that a 12.1 % increase is due in October I’m wondering is it worth jumping ship to electric Ireland or elsewhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,145 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

you need to get the calculator out and work out the rough savings and see if it’s wiorth switching

You'll still get the 32% off the unit price increase in October ...their standing charges are also increasing in October...no 32% off standing charges though.

Thanks for all the info posted 🙂 I’ve 2 areas I could do with some clarity on:

I have my electricity & gas with 2 different companies (24 hr plan) Gas with SSE, Electric with Energia.

At renewal, could I potentially opt for Electricity with SSE (as a new Electric Customer), or is it the case that Im already a customer with Gas contract?

————————-------The Flowgas BWG offer. (24hr Rate) 18 Month Fixed———---
I’ve read on this thread that the rate isn’t actually fixed & can change. “variable and are subject to change” (Under full terms).

Surely, fixed means fixed right? Whats the catch?

Also “18 month minimum term applies” , but the end date is 30th Sept 2026. I notice some posters say to change then.

Can anyone shed some light on the fixed and duration aspect offer of this plan?

Are FlowGas a decent company to go with (heard of poor experiences with Yuno on thread …which puts me off).

    Thanks in advance 👍

If it's any help I was with Flogas previously for about 18 months for electricity only and had no issues with them.

I would also like to know what happens after September next year. The contract is for 18 months so can a customer leave after that without penalty and if not what price will they pay then … same as they have been paying or will they be moved on to a variable rate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,664 ✭✭✭ongarite

The BWG deal was for 18 months at the time it launched in March this year. There is only 12 months left at the fixed rate.

Fixed is as it's says, the base rate on the Flogas BWG site will not change up or down until 30th September 2026.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,145 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

when the fixed price deal ends in September you will be notified of your contract moving to a variable rate and at this point you can move anywhere without penalty, we are 6 months into the 18 month deal at this stage so you’re joining late

Chances are bwg will organise another deal with flo gas at the time so check back here for the link 👍

After switching away from BG on Monday they emailed me today offering a 33% discount on gas and electricity if I cancel the switch. The gas price offered is good but the electricity price isn't competitive and doesn't include the coming increase.

There's a useful article in today's Irish Times that mentions an online tool developed by the Insight (Research) Centre that can look at the log file from your smart meter containing your electricity usage per 30min interval since whenever. This log needs to be dumped out by you from the esbnetworks portal, and then Insight recommend the best electricity plan for you 😁

    Explanation from Insight Centre: https://www.insight-centre.org/switching-energy-provider-prof-alan-smeaton-has-a-tool-for-you/

    Link to the tool: http://tinyurl.com/4tjcwnea

You will need to have registered for an account with ESBnetworks and enter your MRPN:

https://myaccount.esbnetworks.ie/ and then go to My Energy Consumption

I have PV panels and export a fair bit to the grid. I really only consume in the winter months. Hence, I only consume ~800kWh per year. The report takes into account current published price plans (incl announced price hikes!), your usage pattern, AND your export pattern. Nice one 😀
I'll be taking a close look at this when I get to the end of Energia contract!!
