Al Dunne seems to have replaced Aidan Leonard on "Aidan on Saturday" 10am to 1pm.

His show this morning seemed like the Gold playlist with gaps between songs and only a handful of links from Al. It sounded flat.

Not like other pre-recorded shows on Gold where there is better production.

Agree - Saturday morning is the time that Gold listeners like to hear the DJ and the bits and pieces..what about a Pop Quiz?

Are nearly all shows on RTÉ Gold voice tracked - it’s not the same and very obvious..lazy - tick the box radio!!

Yes, most shows are voicetracked. Will Leahy is live between 7:30 and 9, and Carol Moran’s show is sometimes live. I hadn’t heard Rick’s show for a long time so can’t remember if it was live or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,035 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Carol is live for 3 days each week if you're lucky…sometimes 2 days.

Rick is usually live, but has been either on Arena Radio 1 since Sean Rocks passing or he has been on holidays, so its been a while since he was live, or voicetracked.

Currently, there are only 13.5 hours (Will is 7.5, Carol 6) of live presenting on Gold each week.

I see John Kenny is doing the breakfast slot next Wednesday, allowing Will Leahy to do a live slot from the Ploughing Championship and pushing Ronan Collins voicetracked slot later again.

I was surprised JK wasn't filling in more for the Rick O'Shea absence. He has done so before, I think?

I've said before that my current favourite shows are ABC to XTC with John Connolly and Golden Years with Eric Moore. I presume both have other commitments which mean they wouldn't want to do more hours? I would at least like a doubling of showtime though!

Thought JK might have been a good option for Late Date as well last week, has filled in a couple of times before. Strange how they couldn't come up with anyone to replace Cathal.

John Connolly is a writer so this is just a labour of love for him.

Just read his book He, about the life of Stan Laurel.

Eric Moore played Ice T's "You Played Yourself" this evening and told a funny story to go with it. I'm not sure if I had ever heard it played on radio ever before.

More 90s Rap would be appreciated... maybe swap it in for ELO a couple of times a week.

I am surprised there isn't a 90s show on RTE Gold.

didn't Will Leahy present one before up to around 5 years ago, or am I imagining it ??

JK gets the call for Late Date for tonight and tomorrow.

90’s show a great idea for RTÉ Gold..

Indeed there should be a Living in the 60’s..like ‘in the 70’s…and an 80’s and 90’s..with proper links and information about the songs played!!

Tony Blackburn and Bob Harris link each song on their 60’s and 70’s shows on BBC Radio 2.

I am tired of listening to 3 or 4 songs in a row and then a 30 second link ..voice tracked ..🎵

Will obviously enjoying playing to a live audience at the ploughing. Jon Kenny was live from 7 am and send to be the studio backup if the live link goes down with Michael Cahill producing from the ploughing

John on Late Date until 1.00am this morning, fair play

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭GSF

well he’s a vintage rocker so he probably pulls all nighters regularly 😂

Ronan Collins appeared on the RTE TV show Keys to my life on Sunday evening. In the show the presenter Brendan Courtney and Ronan himself referred to RTE Radio in the past and that he had retired (yes he 'retired' from RTE Radio 1 in Dec 2022). It showed Ronan 'returning' to the RTE Radio Centre studio as one of his former workplaces, as is the way on the programme.

I found all of this strange as he still records his RTE Gold programmes in the Radio Centre. Although it did mention and showed Ronan singing at his concerts in his current life, there was zero mention of Ronan being a daily presenter on RTE Gold - surely this detail was fairly relevant in the context of the show !!.

Maybe they don’t want to ruin the “magic” of his current show? Or maybe they forgot Gold exists?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭Expunge

Shows how important it is to Ronan himself. It certainly sounds like it when you listen to the obviously voice-tracked output of his show.

Swinging a golf club in Dubai is higher up the list of priorities, but thanks for the gig!

    Sadly, another RTE "bed blocker"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭GSF

He’s hardly a bed blocker when otherwise it would probably just be automated music . Rte are never going to risk employing anyone to do a show on Gold in case they argue eventually that they are permanently employed.

I really miss Rick in the afternoons, I liked his selection of music.

Same here.. just not the same.
His banter and wit made it a great show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭ZaK23-54

So who is left in RTÉ Gold?

Why don’t John Connolly and Micky Mac get more time on the station?

    Two excellent shows!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭GSF

Doesn’t seem like there is a dedicated Rte Gold team anymore apart from maybe Will. All the rest work on other stations - Amanda, Carol, Michael Cahill etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,035 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

as far as i am aware, it is only michael cahill that works elsewhere in RTE, on 2FM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭GSF

pretty sure Amanda Fennelly does too and Truffles supports other stations too and Cahill seems to be on Rte radio one often too!!

Carol Moran ? Still doing stuff for Radio 1?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,035 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

I have only heard truffles (Erik) on continuity occasionally at the weekends on Radio 1.

Carol and Amanda I have not heard them being referred to on other stations. Carol used to do continuity, short series, covering for music shows on Radio 1 etc but looks like she has not done this since joining RTE Gold

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭Glaceon

I remember Carol doing a music show on Radio 1 on Saturday mornings for a while, before Countrywide. This would have been about 10 years ago.

Lorcan Murray would be a nice addition for Gold given his long association with 2FM in the 80s/90s. He’s got a daily gig with Lyric FM but maybe he might be tempted if/when he retires. Bring back the ‘class tracks’ (if anyone remembers that feature from his 2fm weekend shows)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,035 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Lorcan used to do the 70s show on RTE Gold up until 6 or 7 years ago. He is an RTE staffer and must be near retirement age now.

Yes I remember 'Class Tracks' and other features on his weekend night time shows on 2FM in the early 90s.

15 hours a week on Lyric with a producer picking the music. Fairly easy gig when most of the tunes are about 10 minutes long 😉
