Seems very late in the day to be announcing this. It’s the show next Monday?

I wonder are such decisions those of RTE or The Rose of Tralee ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭Expunge

    RTE's decision I think.

Yeah, I've been missing Rick and Carol I have to say.

I'm starting to think Rick's never coming back!

he’s off the schedule for as far as mid September anyway

Does anyone else think that Dave Fanning's show is on 2 hours too early or is it just me?

I know what you mean, it seems like a glitch to hear him start at 6pm and not 8pm

Have to say though, it suits me great, that's prime time in our house for listening to the radio in the kitchen

I have a memory of him starting at 7pm in 1983 when I first discovered him, am I misremembering that?

Rte Gold is still very focused on a linear schedule when it’s all pre recorded anyway

Who programs the music scheduling on rte gold now? Has someone taken over or did Aidan press the automation on button on his way out? I guess we’ll find out on the October bank holiday Monday if there is no top 100 countdown. I wonder will the other digital radio channels be switched off at year end.

hopefully RTE Gold stays the way it was when Aidan departed, especially the mix when presenters are not on including during the night.

I see Rte Radio 1 have Clara King presenting Arena now while Rick is presumably on holiday. Can’t really see Rick back on Rte gold again on a permanent basis to be honest.

I hope he does come back though, there's a very noticable absence now between Ronan and Carol on weekdays.

there's are many RTE presenters wandering the RTE corridors that could fill in for Rick during this period, I don't understand it !!

there doesn’t appear to be any- who are you thinking of?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Cmx95

So the only live program on gold is the breakfast show

You’d think they could get someone like Lorcan Murray who presumably is full time staff doing 3 hours a day on lyric to voice track a couple of hours for Gold. Or Shay Byrne who only broadcasts 7.5 hours a week on Radio 1

    or Marty god help us!

I wonder how much it has affected the number of listeners. I'd tend to have RTÉ Gold on in the background and I find it very noticable when it switches to automated, even from voice tracked. It's the gaps between songs, I may aswell have Spotify on.

Is Carol not live? She takes requests and comments on whatsapp.. unless she's making it up!

Potential future presenters for RTE Gold (most of whom are not currently with RTE): Lorcan Murray, Marty Whelan, Barry Lang, Gareth O'Callaghan, Ruth Scott, Lisa Gernon, Ian Dempsey, Brian Walsh, Liam Quigley, Scott Williams, Aidan Cooney

Not sure if Ian Dempsey would want to give up his Today FM breakie show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,727 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

I was thinking of when he might retire, but did not want to stop completely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,148 ✭✭✭GSF

well anybody COULD be a presenter but Rte “allegedly” have no money to pay them and are trying to get people out the door through early retirement and voluntary redundancy

Has Barry Lang gone back to flying? I know he did a stint on Classic Hits during the pandemic when planes were grounded but it didn't last long.

    P

You could also add Peter Collins to that list.

He joined RTE in around 1987 on TV continuity and 2FM, The Beat Box on Network 2 TV with Simon Young around 1990, a variety of his own weekend / weekday (fill-in) shows on 2FM … up until he left 2FM in 1999. His final shows on 2FM were very dance music oriented in 1997 to 1999 as he was part of the upcoming dance music line up which grew further after he left the station. His first appearance on 2FM was on "Maxi & Co." Sundays from the Galway studios, representing the West as at the time on her show having a presenter from each different regional studio doing 30 minutes (btw "Irelands Call" was an early version of this idea with Val Joyce and also Arthur Murphy).

He had a great taste in music and his night time weekend shows in the early - mid 90s showcased this with indie, britpop, rock, credible / sophisticated pop and of course dance. I remember him presenting The weekend breakfast show with Teresa Lowe, weekend afternoons also "12s on 2" around 1987 / 88 where 12" mixes of singles were played on saturday evenings. This was probably the first sign of dance music on 2FM.

Surprisingly he never returned to music radio…nor has he covered any sports on RTE radio.

Peter appears every so often presenting in-studio soccer and athletics coverage on RTE TV, especially during world cups and other such competitions like the Olympics. He was well known in the mid 90s to mid 00s for Formula 1 TV coverage.

As far as I know he is an RTE staffer - perfect for RTE Gold.
