Martinez doesn't tick an awful lot of the boxes you would want ticked if you are paying big wages on a keeper. BUT we would know what we are getting with him and he has the experience to come straight in and be no.1.

We are definitely taking a gamble on the keeper spot now. Bayındir isn't good enough, he got into the team because Onana had such a disaster run but he didn't exactly take that opportunity - he's in as a "lesser of 2 evils" job.

Lammens - I heard on the TOTD pod that he was being kept out of the Club Brugge by Simon Mignolet who would have been ~35 at the time. That's not encouraging.

He moved to Royal Antwerp then to get gametime and again found himself on the bench to a more senior keeper for another season. Again, not encouraging

He has had his breakthrough season last season and now he's at Utd with next to nothing between him and the no.1 spot. It's crazy.

We can only wait and see I suppose but we have been talking for 2 years about how signing Hojlund and throwing him in at the deep end at his age was a poor decision.

Now we have done the same thing again this summer with the Keeper and Striker positions AGAIN

Part of the issue with Hojlund was that he had not experienced attacking support.

Sesko is also young, but we did add Cunha and Mbeumo as experienced attacking players to support him so I think we are setting him up a bit better.

I also think Zirkzee could prove a decent sub for him this season, so it won't all be on him at striker either.

Onana going viral again for the goal Cameroon conceded last night! Watched the cape Verde player run from the halfway line and stayed rooted to his line! 🫣

A carbon copy of one he conceded for us a couple of years back.

    Baffling

Is the deal signed with Trabzon yet? Or maybe they'll take a look at that video and stuff five million into an envelope and fast track it to SJR begging him to keep Onana

I think Bayindir still has the possibility to be half way acceptable as a number 2 or to hold down the spot for a few games until Lammens is up to speed.

He has only played 6 or 7 games in England. He is an international.

While it's a small sample size of games played, Bayindirs weakness is on crosses, this is something that can be worked on as opposed to Onana just not having any natural goalkeeping instincts.

Take DDG for example when he first came in, he was dodge under high balls but it was something that was worked on and somewhat corrected and compensated for by defenders.

Onana, you just couldn't compensate for the mistakes he was making.

Bayindir is 27 and has been at the club for 2 seasons.
It would be corrected by now if it was going to happen.

He's just not at the level needed.

Marmoush out for the game this weekend.

they have, potentially, a massive amount of injuries.

Injuries or question marks over Gavariol, Ait Nouri, Foden, Chekri, Stones, Lewis.

Donnarumma let in 4 against Israel the other day. Hopefully he continues that form.

He seems a bit one-dimensional; doesn't come for crosses generally, is a bit shaky coming off his line and should have saved 2 of the shots. With a front 3 of Mbuemo, Bruno and Sesko I reckon we could do some damage there.

Striker running through on goal, 1-on1 from the half way line, and Onana still stays rooted to his line. What on earth does he be thinking...

Oh, and that was Baleba that was dispossessed.

    Christian Eriksen signed for Wolfsburg.

Does Amorim actually do any coaching though? Have any players improved under him? All I hear from him is complaints and excuses

The wages for sure were a factor + Villa apparently wanted minimum fee of £30M.

That fee was too high imo for a 33 yr old keeper showing signs of decline

The irony of YOU saying that all HE does is complain...

we're actually good according to the stats - we can take some comfort there while we're being shellacked by City on Sunday

Wasn't this also the case last season? Unless they convert these "chances" its meaningless

Malacia reportedly turning down the Turkey loan move.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,941 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Yes. If football teams fail to convert chances they won't score goals and will struggle to get results.
Which is why we signed Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko, to hopefully do better than Garnacho and Hojlund.
    Lets hope it works

Got my bloods done recently, everything was very good bar the high cholesterol... You can have lots of good stats but if the the important ones aren't right, then you still have a problem.

Depends on your disposition really, but for me, good secondary stats (such as chances created etc) not leading to good primary stats (goals) is a worry.

Saying that, the stats used in the article were for the previous 10 games, I would be inclined to wait 10 games into this season to make a proper assessment.

Hoping some goals can help my cholesterol levels.

Sancho, Onana, Antony. All 3 probably in the top 10 worst signings in our history and all 3 out the door. Not for much money, not permanent in Onana's case (yet), but they're gone.

but if we had good primary stats (goals) and terrible secondary (chance creation) would that not be more worrying in terms of it being unsustainable?

If Arsenal had 65% possession, an xG of 3.5 and we drew 1-1 because Bruno scored a free kick in the 89th minute is that not more of a long term worry than what actually happened?

I'm not, for a minute, arguing that goals are not a concern or ultimately the most important, but i DO argue that chance creation is important and stats showing that we are improving in terms of ball control, chance creation, passing, pressing etc are long term important and indicative of improvements.

I would also concede that 3 games into a season and one of those being Burnley, at home, would be something to take with a pinch of salt.

No, we struggled to create any chances last season. We also conceeded a lot more chances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,605 ✭✭✭randd1

In the end, there's only one stat that matters; whether we score more than the opposition. Having 20 shots to 5 and 70% possession amounts to fcuk all if they put the ball in the net and we don't. Having better stats simply means nothing if you're not getting results from it.

And far, far too much under Amorim's guidance has the opposition easily put the ball in our net while we struggle to put it in theirs.

Amorim got a reprieve with a late penalty to give us the win against Burnley, but the results have to start flowing fairly quickly, there's nothing left in the bank for him at this stage. A win against City (and the first time wee managed two league win in a row under him) would be a right tonic.

But it's hard to choose between optimism and realism. Optimistically, we have a great chance to beat City. Realistically, it's hard to see us do it given the form.

    Christ we need this.

Given whos form? Considering we are ahead of them in the league after 3 games would that not indicate that we are in better form?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,605 ✭✭✭randd1

    Our form under Amorim.

It hasn’t been the best, in case you haven’t noticed.

what do we think will be the lineup at the weekend? vs what you want to see?

for me what i want (what i think he picks):

    lemmens (bayindir)

    yoro de ligt shaw

amad (dalot) mainoo (bruno) cas dorgu

    bruno (amad) mbuemo

    sesko (zirkzee)

thats assuming no mount and cunha. regardless of selection, we need to do after them hard from the start. they can be gotten at.
