She's on Newstalk now sounding even worse..

Se said that the next 7 years is very important regarding the process for reunification but they still aren't putting a candidate forward...seems odd.

To me it sounds like she wanted it but wasn't given the backing of the party.

    At least we know now...

Probably a case of crunching ever changing numbers and getting more clarity on what is happening in FF particularly. Interviewer seemed more interested in scoring the usual points tbh - asking her to account for her leadership back to the local elections. Been there, done that 100 times Mary Wilson. 🙄

It would absolutely suit FFG to have MLMD out of Leinster house, anybody regularly watching the house of the oireachtas channel can see it's clear she's an absolute pain in the hole for the government TDs

What FFG may not realise though is that her successor will be no worse. The only way really of silencing their critics is to do a good job but for some reason they don't want to or are maybe incapable of doing that

I've said many times here SF will back CC and this mornings announcement only strengthens my belief.

    Watch this space

Odd, I didn't hear the RTE interview but she sounded fine on newstalk, whose presenters would be quite well known for their anti-SF views

Maybe it's down to the production quality? Bauer would be known to be quite good in that respect

I don't think it was production quality..I just thought she sounded unsure, considering she had a set statement to make as to why she wasn't standing or why SF aren't putting someone forward, particularly as they think the next 7 years are so important..

As I said, at least we know..

Let's see how Kerry Coco get on today with 17 people looking for an endorsement..

To me, Mary Lou sounded a little "under the weather ", not quite her ebullient self.

A las Brian Cowen's infamous Morning Ireland interview back in the day. Not saying she was suffering the after effects of alcohol, but she didn't seem quite as with it as you would expect

Did a quick search there - would it be fair to say both of you have never heard MLMD do well on radio? 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭mikep

Se often sounds more assured of what she's saying but can come apart when challenged..this morning she sounded unsure from the beginning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,765 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I'll see if RTE podcast the interview later on and get back to you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,638 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

    Any

a set statement to make as to why she wasn't standing or why SF aren't putting someone forward

But she apparently didn't have a clear position on the latter part, which may help account for her uncertainty?

Anyone know if she was asked about SF potentially facilitating independents other than CC (as ruled out by FG)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭feelings

*cough* My logic seems sound 😉 SF have to back someone, and looking more likely now to be CC. They cannot be seen to be irrelevant.

A potential president claiming Gardai investigations into a Taoiseach leaking confidential documents is comical

I know when Leo's book was getting done HH wasn't the FG candidate but he really is after giving her a headache here

This along with the animal abuse issue shows Heather dosn't really care for the laws of the land

You know if it comes down to a battle between her and Gavin there might be a few floating voters not put off to find HH is not your stereotypical straitlaced uptight Protestant…

I think MLMD personal life has worn her out. She looks like she is still in her current position out of duty to the party, rather than herself.

But MLMD has never been a good public orator. Not many in the Dàil are these days, in fairness. But she always runs through “checklists” or the same lines v the government.
There has never been a Mary Lou moment that made me think “superb debating skills.” “What an excellent question!” It all seemed painting by numbers. Following the party strategists.

However, as a figurehead for SF ROI MLMD has done a great job. The bridge between the NI beards of old, and the fact of new SF ROI a female with a South Dublin accent (born and reared) styling herself as “anti-establishment” and fully behind the strategy from her bosses in SF NI HQ.

I think as part of the “strategy” SF are wise to sit this Presidential race out. Until SF have a ready made candidate in future. SF can be lukewarm on the Connolly support, while simultaneously claiming a FF:FG victory is a return to the “same old politics”. Meanwhile they strengthen their position in DE, and freshen up their decades long stranglehold on Stormont.

In summary, it will just end up with the current SF strategy, High on symbolism which plays well in NI, but low on action they don’t care about action up there.

But SF have to be prepared for the more discerning voter in the ROI, they have to get prepared for fear they get real power in DE. Also SF have to placate their voters who view them as “traitors” on immigration. Or else find nice new middle class voters.

They can’t just “wing it” like in NI. Symbolism alone will not work with the ROI electorate.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

This indicates they haven't made a decision and are not pre-empting one ahead of the Ard Comhairle meeting.

Thoughts and prayers Francie, tough to see yet another political dream crumble before your very eyes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭harryharry25

They have been saying the same thing for ages now

The fact is FF and FG supporter's hate that SF don't run the party through the media like in FF/FG.

Can't access the Indo article but judging by the by-line she was referring to the 'furore' rather than the Garda investigation but whatever floats your particular political boat.

The animal cruelty issue is clear, she passed on a letter without making any comment. The whistle-blower has a 'belief' but all the evidence indicates she didn't intervene. Again whatever floats your particular political boat.

20th of September before they say anything one way or the other?

The final deadline for nominations is 24th so if they plan to put a name forward to the party for consideration, they aren't leaving much time are they?

That suggests they are going to just row in behind Connolly or they are simply going to a sacrificial lamb to run without any internal vote/discussion.

All to the good for her.

A person who would destroy, diminish and ridicule a pathetic Paddy Cosgrave driven witchhunt, and tell The Ditch to f**k off, will attract thousands of votes.

Yes I'm well aware a few FF and FG TDs and members, don't really think laws apply to them

I wouldn't call them floating voters though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,475 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

SF will either nominate Michelle O'Neil who is the only 'Irish unity' SF candidate with a credible chance of winning. If they decide to back CC it will only improve her chance of winning marginally IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭harryharry25

It wasnt the Ditch who first had the story about Leo leaking confidential documents

Your hatred of the ditch has made you look like someone who has an agenda who writes stories not what's in them

The Ditch have had stories that forced people to resign from seats in the previous Dail so no wonder they are not liked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,676 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I cannot see how SF 'not' running a candidate would be a good move for them in any shape or form. Backing Connolly would be meaningless considering the likes of Labour, SDs and PBP have already backed her. It would be the main opposition party saying 'We are going to sit this one out' and have zero involvement in the election, which would seem bonkers given that the two government parties FF and FG are running a candidate.

For a party that is all about a united Ireland and has spent the last 12 months telling us how important the next seven years of a Presidency are for a united Ireland, they seem completely unprepared for the contest we all knew was coming. At best that is completely unprofessional, at worst, it is just stupid naivety.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,587 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

….or they are following the same processes/protocol as previous elections. Announced McGuinness and Ni Riada around the same time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭harryharry25

They have said for ages they won't make a decision until the AC happens.

I think they should back Connolly myself, but if they do run someone a big reveal a day or 2 before the nominations have to be in, will take all the media headlines and all the talk on radio shows

Jim Gavin as a result might actually be forced to do an interview and tell us his views on at least one thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,195 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

If they were serious about the importance of the election as they have claimed, they would have had someone on the pitch months ago.

It just looks awful. MLMD dithering on the radio this morning sums it all up.

I would counter your argument. The President has very little influence over whether or not a united Ireland happens. SF know that would be done through government, negotiations and building support across the entire island. It wouldn't be done through the Aras. Their focus is to get into government, which is the correct decision to achieve a united Ireland.
