Another year where May had the best weather. May is Ireland's best month when taking into account daylight, temperature and nature, in my opinion.

And Ireland will be too. You are severely underestimating how warm it's been.

Using provisional 00-00 values, Malin Head is experiencing its warmest summer on record since 1955. Its current record is very strangely summer 2023 two years ago which 2025 is 0.2C above right now. Malin Head being one of the stations considered in the national mean when they mention their rankings of months since 1900.

Probably only a matter of time before this becomes common. One of them can eat up to 50 bees per day. Bad news.

Probably because we had alot of cloud particularly in July and we didn't get a day to chase the all time record been broken like we did in 2022. It's definitely been a warm summer, I've been in T-shirts since the 2nd week of June and haven't had to put a huddie on in so long. The way summer should be unlike last summer.

Today is certainly a reminder to how August mostly plays out, thankfully we'll only have about 5 days this month with our typical August weather. Summer is basically almost over now and will open the Autumn threads in a few days. Unfortunately I'm not sure I'll get the opportunity to open the Winter thread as boards may not be around by then, looking at the funding and subscription there is a long way to go in just 70+ days. My hope is alot to happen in September and early October to meet the target.

Does the Winter thread not start really early every year, I'm sure there's one that morphs into the Winter thread that starts usually in August, to allow people to speculate on snow etc.

I do agree with you it may not be around to see the winter season with 74 days and counting on the clock.

yeah there's usually a winter related thread with thoughts and predictions that opens around the end of September or early October that morphs into the general winter thread on December 1st. I usually start both short range and FI threads last day of November.

Today is the 1st time in what feels like months where I kind of need a jumper on. I didnt wear a jumper once in July and August (in fairness in most countries you would never have to) but I was quite surprised this year at how much warmer the evenings were. I felt you could head out most evenings at 8 or 9pm and still be very comfortable in tshirts and shorts with it staying in the low 20s until much later in the day. I found in the past 20 years there were some nice summers that we had but evenings always felt very cool even if you were at a BBQ after a long sunny day but the evenings would be chilly, that wasnt the case at all in July and August this year. Not sure if others felt that difference

Gonzo your mention of winter thread there……….one thing I will never ever forget was the hive of activity these threads were in November / December 2010. I remember in December in particular of that year and the unprecedented cold and massive snowfalls for about 5-6 weeks, you would refresh the page in here and there would be another 20 posts in about 2 minutes. The Irish sea streamers were a thing of beauty that month, it was like the Irish sea was pressing a refresh button on heavy snow showers every 10 minutes and they would intensify as they approached the east coast. They were great times!!! Anyway back to Summer…………

Ah they were great times, lamp-post watching at it's best.

I certainly wore shorts and t-shirts a lot more this summer than most previous summers. We left the windows open almost all of the time and often at night. The temperature just seemed to hover in the 18-20C range many evenings and nights which made it very pleasant. I never golfed or gardened as much either.

Manky weather this morning. The kids got a rough week for back to school.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Of all my time on boards November/December 2010 is by far the most memorable, it was an incredible time. I remember having 2 screens, one screen had the radar tracking the big pink snowtrains, and the other screen had boards open and constantly hitting the refresh button. Boards also had a far bigger user base back then compared to now.

One of the things I miss the most from the best version of boards is the way we could colour code a thread to the yellow, orange and red warnings. All that went away with the new version of boards.

The new boards forum refresh didn't go down well with alot of people and Googles algorithm over the past few years has not been kind. I just hope over the next 75 days that they can reach their target because if this goes, we're do we go next. Making an account on Netweather just wouldn't be the same and too much UK focus.

Agree December 2010 was a phenomenal weather event. One of my other big memories of that winter spell vs any other I have experienced in Ireland was two things. The first was the sheer size of some of the icicles that were forming from the drainpipes and roofs of peoples houses. I saw some on Christmas eve and Christmas day that year that were about 6-8 feet long and so thick with ice. I even recall fountains freezing over and seeing massive sheets of ice floating down the River liffey. One other great memory I have was walking in the Liberties one evening and it was completely flat calm and the temperature was close to -10 degrees and there was freezing fog. I could see in the street lamps the most amazing tiny ice crystals that were floating in the air, it almost didnt look real but I just stood there thinking I might never see the likes of this in Dublin / Ireland again. The depth of cold and indeed snow on Christmas eve and day morning was extraordinary.

November / December 2010 and Summer of 1995 are my two favourite weather memories for me. Storm Emma probably comes next

One very warm/hot day does not a summer make though. You can have such a day in a relatively forgettable or even cool summer. 1st July 2015 set the UK July temp record (before 2019 and 2022 bet it twice) and we know 2015 was a pretty dismal summer.

Consistency is what drives up the average, not extremes. July 2025 was a warmer month nationally than July 2022, the cloudy warm nights will have played a part in this to an extent but July 2022 was not cool by any means by night either with a lot of cloud. And if we look at Dunsany's daily temperature departure from average, the lack of blue down spikes is very apparent throughout this summer with only limited cool spikes since the first third of June which was the last period that was cooler than average for more than a few days.

The current automated Dunsany station has records only since 2006 but 2025 is its warmest summer on record in that time as of August 27th and is almost 0.3C above its 2nd warmest which was 2018.

Just came across this on met eireann website about December 2010. I hadnt realised that Mayo recorded the lowest temp that month of -17.5 degrees and Casement in Dublin recorded -15.7 degrees on Christmas day itself and 27cms of lying snow that day at Casement airport

    https://www.met.ie/cms/assets/uploads/2017/08/ColdSpell10.pdf

Sorry thats the last winter post but just amazing to look back on how memorable an event that was for Ireland

I've just put my huddie on for the first time in over 2 months. The humidity and warmth of the past 10 weeks or so has definitely well and truly left us now and replaced by chilly Atlantic autumal air.

Currently 14C here in Meath, probably early June was the last time we had a temperature this chilly in the afternoon.

When I think back now, I did my driving test on the 10th November 2010 and I remember it was a beautiful, crisp, sunny morning….just as well I got it done then and passed cos what followed a few weeks later was unreal! I would have been cancelling it if it was then.

2010 - I remember Lough Corrib freezing over at its narrowest point in the middle. The ice was very thick for the most part. I saw a farmer strap a load of empty plastic cartons to his body and walk across to a large island where his cattle were. He walked right across a fairly deep boating channel - roughly 250m. He could easily have walked across the entire lake because the other side of the island had a much shallower and narrower distance to the 'mainland'. Incredible stuff but he made sure to feed his cattle who were struggling. Braver man than me. I walked on the ice along the shoreline and the sound of the ice creaking would send shivers down your spine.

Other scenes in 2010 were spectacular but that memory stands out.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

2010 stands out for me as having had snow on the ground in Arklow from Nov 27th straight through to December 27th with no gap in between

It was also the only time ever here,on my part of the east coast that I recorded-11c at 1 pm in the day during Xmas week under deep snow

That month had several ice days

For the sheer quantity of thunder snow and the depth of the stuff not drifts, the actual depth being up to 17 inches in old money

March 2018 had snow on the ground for in excess of 3 weeks continuously here also

I like the darker mornings. During mid-summer my east-facing bedroom is quite bright from around 5am despite having black-out curtains and the later sunrise and the darker room means I'm not waking so early.
