I got a 5k overdraft from AIB and bought Eircom shares. Sold 5 days after IPO just before they started to crash. Phew! Could have been a very expensive overdraft.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Thankfully I haven't made any single, substantial financial mistakes but I'd say like many, I've wasted plenty of money incrementally over the years (ie nights out, holidays, eating out, buying junk etc etc)

One thing in particular though that I stopped doing was entering into phone contracts though. In particular I mean the extortionate 'upgrade' packages where you pay €50-€60 a month over a 2 year period for a useless piece of sh1t of a phone you don't need. Much cheaper to buy a decent phone and do a €20 a month rolling contract!

I think my biggest mistake though is not educating myself on actually how money works. I cleared all my debts a few years ago and I've managed to build up over €60k in my current account which I know is moronic because it loses value by the day. Problem is i have no understanding of financial markets and even less trust in people who manage money and/or financial institutions.

Any advise on a decent finance/investment course would be greatly appreciated, I want to have some understanding of finance before pints hit €100 and standard houses hit €1m+ 😂

Living my twenties like they weren't going to end. Never really saved, had fun, drank on the weekends, went to matches and enjoyed myself.

Never though of 10/15 years down the line what that money would do if I had kids. Even a fraction of it, and you'd have set yourself and your kids up in life.

If I had to do it again I'd put away €20 a week for the few months I wasn't working, and €70-100 a week for the times I was.

Years ago with my first own car, must have been, 22 or 23 yrs old in 2001 to 2002, I reversed into someone in a shopping car park and damaged one of their rear lights. nothing big

No arguments etc just exchanged names and numbers, I worked at the shopping center so I used that as security too. Damage cost me £500 (obviously inflated) which I paid for with an overdraft on my bank account. I didn't want to go via insurance as a first time driver it was nearly £1k a year back then.

That overdraft stuck with me for years and years due to my own poor money management and been poorly paid and I'd say it cost me more than any increase in insurance over the same period

Lesson of the story insurance is there for a reason use it!!

Playing catch up now, but young me hadn't a clue back then.

To everyone now - get a pension!

please tell me you have made substantial payments into a pension as well as building up 60k in your current account…

Yes, I've been paying into a pension for about 10 years now.

Initially I kept very little in my current account (there wasn't any money to save!), but then I started saving just after covid and it got a bit out of hand. I'm looking for something to do with it but I get the impression that everything is very over-priced at the minute so I'm reluctant to pull the trigger on big spending when the value and/or security isn't there in my view.

Also, I want to educate myself before rolling any dice.

Just 6 years later, €14 for breakfast would be a bargain 😳

Check that you are maximizing pension contributions if not use up your avc allowance

I didn’t necessarily mean that I regret it but it wasn’t a great financial decision.
