The World has sleepwalked into reliance on American technology, they have a massive advantage now that they can use as leverage.

Agreed. Newsom's tactic is simply 'well if you're concerned about this, I'm only following the lead of the President' and it's working.

Kimberly Guilfoyle, as stupid as she is, has known better than to try and turn the end of their relationship into a public war-of-words.

Von der Leyen: We have to make sure the Ukrainian children come back to their families as part of this deal.

Trump: I was just thinking that a couple of weeks ago we made the largest trade deal in history. Congratulations.

    What a total **** imbecile.

Am I correct in understanding that Trump sees there is no need for a ceasefire before Russia and Ukraine meet for his suggested peace talks and BEFORE the European countries put boots on the ground in Ukraine between the warring parties?

Apparently he took a break from the meeting today to have a phone conversation with Putin. I'd imagine that Putin would, at least, have had the White House meeting being screened where he could see and listen to it and keep up to date without Trump lying to him.

Edit: It's almost like he thinks the killing of civilians he so much deplores should continue until the peace talks he's overseeing should end in peace breaking out.

Newsom won't even win the Democratic Primary. AOC will.

It's more likely Newsom's Democratic opponents in the Primaries would be alluding to his personal issues (alcoholism, affair with the wife of his campaign manager in 2005) than the GOP.

I saw that clip. Only a deeply troubled mind could instantly pivot from the topic of kidnapped children to a trade deal.

It seems that there was a hot mic incident during the White House event when people were chatting together, after Trump had his chat with Putin, and Trump is caught apparently telling an O.P. that Putin told him he had changed his position in order to help Trump, possibly in reference to meeting Zelenskyy in the near future.

Edit: It seems that the hot mic episode was toward the start of the meeting, when the meeting and greeting was on. In a hot mic moment Monday, President Donald Trump appeared to be reassuring French President Emmanuel Macron that Russian President Vladimir Putin was serious about making peace in Ukraine. 'I think he wants to make a deal. I think he wants to make a deal for me,' Trump whispered to Macron in the White House East Room before their meeting started. 'Do you understand that? As crazy as it sounds.' Macron appeared skeptical that Putin was serious about ending the three and a half year conflict that Russia had started.

It also could be the reason for a change in Trump's position on a ceasefire. Last week he opposed a ceasefire, this week he is OK with one, but not until after Zelenskyy meets with Putin and agrees on a peace deal, after which Trump would have them meet with him. The outcome would be clear in one aspect: Trump would then claim he had ended another war without any European parties getting involved.

One thing I am getting from the heads of states meetings over Ukraine is that Trump may respect Macron in much the same way he does Putin (just not to the same level) as he had Macron beside him in the official photo of the event with Zelenskyy on the other side.

On a related issue to Trump talking about the election vote machinery, Newsmax is reacting to its agreement to pay Dominion Voting Systems $67 million to settle the voting software firm’s defamation lawsuit over the MAGA network’s airing of 2020 election lies by calling for businesses to ditch the state where the complaint was filed.

“Newsmax likely could not have been sued in Delaware had it not been incorporated there at the time Dominion Voting Systems filed its lawsuit,” the network said in an online statement on Monday.

“Newsmax encourages every business incorporated in Delaware to reconsider and exit the state, as it did so to Florida,” the right-wing channel added. “Businesses should re-domicile in jurisdictions that still believe in the rule of law and remain committed to protecting constitutional freedoms for all Americans.”

Earlier this spring, Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric M. Davis ruled that there was “clear and convincing evidence” that Newsmax had made false and defamatory claims about Dominion, and the $1.6 billion lawsuit would go to trial. However the trial was postponed.

In a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission made public on Monday, it was revealed that Newsmax had agreed to pay Dominion $67 million over the next two years to settle the complaint, with $27 million to be paid this month. The payoff to Dominion comes on the heels of Newsmax settling with Smartmatic for $40 million to make a similar lawsuit over 2020 election conspiracies go away.

One obvious lesson from this is that if one is lied about and a case is provable in court, Delaware is one state where lies will not be accepted in the law courts.

I can’t wait to read the book about this part of history in 15 years when Trump is dead and long gone.

    Fascinating.

One of the most shameful chapters in American history, in a history littered with a lot of shameful chapters.

    What the actual?

Someone's gonna have to explain to me how effectively kidnapping/holding a sitting Democrat representative against their will is legal.

Maybe Manic (lives in Texas?) Will be able to inform us how this is totally normal and something about checks and balances makes it OK.

I distinctly remember when the shooting happened thinking that something was very off with the whole event.

I mentioned it to others, who gave me a quizzical look as if to say I was being ridiculous to suggest it.

Since then, there were a number of times where certain things made me more and more sceptical of the whole event.

This? This absolutely fūcking seals it for me

Has Trump lost weight ? He has started to look very frail, slow, vulnerable. I think the combination of age and pressure is starting to take effect.

unless Trump is suffering from some physical condition - maybe that spur has grown and is affecting his gait/coordination - he needs to do a course in deportment. He walked down the Airforce One steps as if he had come out of a long stay in hospital. He ‘strained ‘ all over the red carpet on his way to shake hands with Putin.
He walked slowely with his shoulders drooped. If he wants a lesson on how he should have done it he need go no further than watch how Putin did it.
maybe a look at Biden’s little trot when he arrived to some locations / meeting might also be considered. Ho wait, I forgot. That’s definately not on so I will hereby withdraw the idea in case I get BARRED!

I was only thinking this last night. Remember with the likes of Bush, Obama or Biden we could go weeks over here without hearing anything about the US president.

In the last 6 months there's been Elon, Iran, the first Zelensky meeting, the ridiculous tariffs announcement, Epstein, ICE, Alaska and loads others! He definitely knows how to generate headlines anyway!

I genuinely believe the MAGA movement will implode when he's gone tho, his family members are ridiculous and remind me of Roman and Kendall Roy. Then the likes of Vance doesnt have the clout or personality to carry it on

It seems the speaker (I think it is) of the Texan House has signed an order that the Democrat Party members who returned to the house (allowing for enough member numbers there for a quorum and a vote) will be let leave the house on the basis that each member is then to be in the custody of a member of Texas Dept of Public Safety. No custodian, no permit to leave the building.

Listening to the News Agents podcast about yesterday and John Sopel described Trump perfectly.

He said that he's been described as an "armchair" because he takes the shape of the last person who sat on him. On Friday he was talking in line with Putin's message, last night he was appearing to agree with what Zelensky and European leaders were saying.

Ultimately they think that both Putin and the European leaders are playing Trump in a similar way trying to get him to push their agenda. Putin so that the war will continue as he tries to lay claim to more land and the Europeans so that Trump might see their point that Putin is 100% the antagonist here.

Trump is like an 8yr old kid who has found themself become King after their parent died and they are the next in line. They don't have the skill or capacity for the job but everyone is forced to pretend that they do because of the norms that exist. America holding the role of "World Police" (a role that they absolutely want) means everyone else has to deal with an idiot who doesn't understand global politics when they have the job.

Imagine if Reagan had installed a painting of him getting shot. It's insane.

Chris Pratt came out to say RFK is doing great things for health and being unfairly maligned. Ironically enough John Oliver had a great segment on all the crazy **** coming from RFK's people. This includes the potential surgeon general drinking a liver smoothie. His experts include noted conspiracy theorist Robert Malone who was a popular fixture on the conspiracy theory forum for a while.

Given how it takes time to work out all the small details in a peace deal as complex as the Ukraine War, tossing in Putin having a private line to Trump, the alleged solver and dictator of the peace plan details, and the fact that the war is at stage 2 of Putin's scheme (part 1 in 2014), is it likely that Trump will be around and still alive to see it and earn the plaudits if Putin keeps putting up roadblocks (like no ceasefire before talks) to peace in Trump's time?

In contrarian order; I hope not as he's done quite a lot to help Putin achieve the damage and killings in Ukraine and Russia to the present day BUT I'd hope that the day arrives sooner than Putin would hope for (maybe with the removal of him, Medvedev and Lavrov from the Russian stage).

He always says the quiet bit out loud. And the **** thing is that it works for him. He flies a kite, at first its dismissed as 'just wacky old trump again' then he says it again and 'he's just distracting from something else'

then he goes and does the thing he said he was gonna do and everyone is already so used to the idea that nobody bothers to actually resist it anymore.

I don't disagree, but does Trump have the ability to play that sort of 'long' game? Not that realistically it is all that long, but even carrying something for a week or two? As far as he is concerned, two weeks is an infinitely long time away that he does not have to worry about. Is it more that he throws out so much rubbish that occasionally he can come back and latch onto something he mentioned previously?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,910 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

I don't think he's doing it on purpose, laying the seeds in a long term coherent plan. I just think that the current zeitgeist in the US is that the institutions of civil society are so weak that even a really blunt instrument can push it over the edge into authoritarianism

Fascism doesn't take sophisticated machiavellian planning to succeed, what it takes is an opportunist who is in the wrong place at the wrong time when there are enough fractures to allow him to shatter the institutions that hold democracy together and install his own supporters all around him to allow him to bully his way into power.

Trump being a natural bully, extremely corrupt, with no shame, so he doesn't even care when he gets caught, a narcissist and a compulsive liar has allowed him to build a cult following, and the fact that he is easy to manipulate and willing to sell favours for cash and power means he has been able to attract a single minded cohort of extremely powerful and wealthy oligarchs behind him.

They think they're pulling his strings, he thinks they are his pawns, both are true but ultimately none of that matters when the outcome is the fall of democracy in the US and its replacement with a neo-theocratic fascist hellscape.

I don't buy the idea that the shooting was staged. I think Trump is far too cowardly to stand on a podium while some young fella took a shot at him close enough to his head to graze his ear

I think he was probably hit by some debris from the bullet which explains his barely getting any injury at all, He reacted well, a photographer managed to get the shot of a lifetime, and later on, the propaganda writes itself.

If anything, Trump almost ballsed it up by droning on about it in such a boring Grandpa Simpson style so that people were visibly getting bored whenever he talked about it

I don't want to drag you or anyone else down my rabbit hole on this one, but the only things I'd say is

    1) I don't believe the blood came from a bullet, and so he didn't allow himself to be shot at

    2) the location of the photographer is suspicious as hell

    3) as is the flag in the background

    4) as is the secret service allowing him to stand still after shots are fired to pose as he did

    5) that we know feck all about the shooter

    6) that Trump himself put a f*cking poster of it on his wall

    Anyway...

    ...

    ...

    Where are the Epstein files?
