Starting this early as the mixed doubles actually starts tomorrow.

Hopefully the final grand slam of the year will be a good one!

The new mixed doubled format is a complete farce imo.

    From Wikipedia:

The matches will be played in best-of-three-sets with short sets to four games, no-ad scoring, tiebreakers at four-all, and a 10-point match tiebreak in lieu of a third set. The final will be a best-of-three set match to six games, featuring no-ad scoring, with tiebreakers at six-all with a 10-point match tiebreaker in lieu of a third set

I mean, this will be the most asterisked grand slam title of all time surely. It's essentially an exhibition, but with a one million dollar prize fund.

Very insulting to the doubles specialists who have gone before

Surely they should be actually trying to make the doubles and mixed doubles more important and use it as a way of propping up the players outside of the top 100 so you have more pro players.

It would make more sense to start the doubles after 3rd of 4th round of the singles is over and allow 3 or 4 wildcard teams of singles players who've been knocked out to enter and increase the standard and prestige and attention for the doubles events.

at least Dramacanu and Alcaraz are out already. I do hope he stays away from her for his own sake.

Kind of a weird comment tbh. Not entirely sure what, if anything, is "dramatic" about Raducanu. The continued harassment she gets from certain sections of people is really weird.

Anyway, reminder that the US Open singles actually starts today rather than the usual Monday.

Non stop drama with her. Changing coaches like socks, injuries, unwell on court regularly. All very brave little soldier stuff. Very surprised you don't see it.

Yeah, I'm really not sure how suffering injuries and illnesses can be described as being "dramatic". Raducanu has zero control over these things. She's had three surgeries before she even turned 21. A very strange point of view to have, I think.

Anyway, Raducanu is into the second round with a 61 62 win over Shibahara, her first win at the US Open since she won the whole thing.

Medvedev is out, losing in 5 sets to Bonzi (world #51). The match didn't finish until nearly 1am local time, 6 am our time. That's almost time for me to wake up.

As expected, no problems for Djokovic against Tien.

Mboko vs Krejcikova looks like the most interesting of the early matches today.

The Medvedev match was.. eventful. A cameraman enters the court when Bonzi was serving at match point. Umpire gives him back a first serve and Medvedev completely explodes, riling up the crowd and delaying the match for over five minutes.

Bonzi failed to serve it out, lost the tiebreaker, the next set 0-6 and only won it in the fifth set. Pretty awful behaviour from Medvedev all round.

What an absolute pillock that cameraman is. He should have been removed himself, the dipstick. He carried on like it was nothing to do with him. Medvedev was basically penalized for the cameraman's error, and Bonzi was rewarded. I can't blame Medvedev for the initial complaint. Sounded like a big part of the crowd were on his side too.

The cameraman's credentials have been rightly revoked for the rest of the tournament.

As unfair as it was to Medvedev, it's standard practice for a let due to some outside interference (in this case, someone being an proper eejit).

Petra Kvitova's career ends in brutal fashion, loses 61 60 to Diane Parry. Great player, great career, but I think she never quite achieved what she was capable of.

I know the protocols, but it's a bit unusual being between 1st and 2nd serve. He had missed the 1st; would there have been the delay if the umpire had just let the 2nd serve proceed? I didn't see the full incident in the match, just Medvedev's reactions.

Jack Draper gets the second set over the line just about 7-5 to lead by two sets against Gomez.

    Draper through in 4 sets.

Keys out....just the 89?!? Unforced errors...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,396 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Medvedev behaved like an absolute idiot very unsportsmanlike.

Umpire did what he had to do.

Medvedev asking him "are you a man?"

Medvedev making a really graphic gesture...I would say kind of homophobic...

Smashing the racket while Bonzi being interviewed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,611 ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

Ok, that sounds way beyond. I only saw him shouting at the umpire and waiting for the serve, winding up the crowd.

Keys just hasn't been with it the past few months. She's still almost certain to reach the Tour Finals though.

I'm not sure why Kvitova bothered to turn up, as she only won a game against Diane Parry. I suppose if she could play the event with a protected ranking, why not take the money? A sad way to end her career.

Boulter out in the first round. She seems to be regressing at the moment.

Medvedev has been awful the last year or so. Always a drama with him. He hasn't kicked on after winning the US Open. He seems to be on the same trajectory as Tsitsipas.

Raducanu playing rather well against Tjen.

    6-2, 5-1 with her serving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,396 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Draper has had to pull out with injury

If you missed the 3-hour Gauff vs Tomljanovic match last night, then lucky you. I'm not sure what possessed me to stay up until after 3am to watch it right to the bitter end.

According to the doctor, he needed 8 weeks of recovery and rest for a full healing but he decided otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,319 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Raducanu getting hammered by Rybakina. A set down in less than 30 minutes. 6-1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,319 ✭✭✭Floppybits

All over now. Rybakina leading 5-2 in the second. Raducanu can't handle Rybakina power. Rybakina to serve this out and over in an hour.

Epic choke job by Struff trying to close out a straight sets win against Tiafoe, 4 double faults in a row by him in the 9th/10th game of the 3rd set

Tiafoe will probably come back and win in 5 sets now
