Not down on the timesheet for Scottish open next week

Bad round for Shane and made it worse for us he was on tv for it all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,890 ✭✭✭abff

Bad finish to his round today, with 5s on each of his last 4 holes. Didn't make a huge difference as he was already way down the field. But a similar performance next week could put his place in the Tour Championship in jeopardy if other results go against him.

And his automatic spot in the Ryder Cup team could also be in jeopardy. If he falls outside the top 6, his recent form may make it difficult for Luke Donald to justify giving him a wildcard

He’s certain for the team even if misses out on automatic pick. He’s just having a typical season for most pros. They’ve a hot few months and then a mix bag. He’s having that mix bag after a hot start to year and not winning one will hurt.

I wonder will the USA supporters get at him at the Ryder cup after what happened last time out and USA media bring up drink questions to see if he bites

You’d expect Shane to get a pick, but recent form has been very poor and another bad performance next week could leave Luke Donald facing a dilemma. The best outcome would be for Shane to earn enough points next week to move him back into the top 6.

Hatton won’t be playing and a finish of 19th or better would move Shane ahead of him in the rankings. But Aberg or Hovland could leapfrog Shane by finishing 2nd, while Fitzpatrick or Detry would move past him with a win.

Assuming no changes in current positions, Shane would be vying with the above four players for a captain’s pick and a case could be made for choosing each of them ahead of Shane. This would leave only 2 spots remaining, but it’s hard to see who else would be picked ahead of Shane.

So he’s probably assured of a place in the team, but it would be nice to see him show some kind of form ahead of the Ryder Cup.

An interesting side issue is whether Tyrell Hatton would get a pick if he happens to fall out of the top 6.

Hatton should definitely be in on form, politics is another matter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,544 ✭✭✭Trampas

Hatton is in no matter what. I wonder will Donald pick Rahm. I would assume aberg and Hovland probably get a pick also.

Fitzpatrick and hogaard down for British masters.

Always say if you don’t make automatic selection then you or supporters have no complaints if not picked but I still think Donald will pick him

I also think Shane is almost guaranteed a pick. But there are players that could give Luke Donald a real headache with a DP World tour win in the next week or so - e.g. the Hojgaards and Matt Wallace.

It would also be nice for Shane to finish in one of the automatic Ryder Cup spots for (I think) the first time in his career.

Fingers crossed for a good week and to book his place at East Lake again too. A few big name Euros never made a Tour Championship - top 30 on the PGA Tour is no mean feat.

Shane's record in the RC is very average. He played well with Tyrell in 2021 to win a point but was roundly defeated when he was paired with Rory then again v Cantlay in the singles.

Dont know which of them played the golf in Rome when he was paired with Straka but Id imagine it wasnt all Shane. Then he tied Jordan Spieth in the singles, a player who is out of form and was then too and who has a frankly lousy record in the singles format.

Ive also been distinctly unimpressed with Shane' conduct, particularly last time around; going ballistic over relatively inconsequential strokes as he did frequently in Rome is a poor look imo. I wonder if Donald looks at him as someone who will rile the Americans up and act as a distraction to them rather than a true points winner. The crowd is going to be extremely hostile in NY and Id honestly worry about Shane's ability to cope that without wearing himself out. He's dangerously close to a Monty like level of animated and irritable, and he aint the player Monty was, at least not in the Ryder Cup.

Dont get me wrong, Id be surprised if he wasnt picked (assuming he needs a pick) but certainly wouldnt be outraged if he wasnt

In 2021 when they were hammered he was playing finau on Saturday and held a putt and doing fist pumps. Tony had the look of WTF. Fair enough in a close match but the team were getting well beaten. It was Shane getting rightly engrossed in the game but overall position it did look a bit crazy. We will find out in a few weeks but I think he’s a shoe in unless he doesn’t get to east lake and turns up at the British masters and mc. I doubt he’ll turn up but anyone player who’s not playing east lake and wants to be on the team not qualified should be playing

Had no issue with him going nuts with that putt, it was his 1st point in a RC and a significant one at the time. In Rome, he was reacting the same way holing 3 foot putts for halves and was possibly the only european to get drawn into feigning mock irritation at having to hole a 2 footer for a half by placing his putter between where his ball was and the hole. Really juvenile stuff, at least in my view. Id go so far to say I was genuinely disappointed at some of his exuberance in his match against Spieth.

Didn't see much of Shane in Rome apart from the infamous video of him needlessly "giving out" to a marshal. The other stuff mentioned does sound cringey. Regarding 2021, apparently he and even his wife got awful abuse from the "fans". Xander Schauffle's father mentioned in an interview recently that he personally saw Shane's wife being called a whore right in front of Lowry himself. So it kind of explains some of the overexuberant celebrations in 2021 at least.

Get what youre saying but I suppose my view would be #1 that wasnt Spieth's fault and #2 he wasnt making a statement to a hostile, predominantly American crowd in Rome, he was riling up a home crowd needlessly (perhaps to the point where abuse would be brought upon his opponent by some drunken European idiot).

Im willing to allow a slight mitigation to the away team when it comes to Ryder Cup histrionics because the home crowds have become so partisan. American 'fans' have a long history of shame in that regard (which will be dragged down even further in Bethpage) but Ive seen European crowds really deteriorate in decorum in the last 10 years or so. Some players are motivated by it - Monty and Poulter spring to mind, Rory as well - whereas others cant hack it at all. I'll decide what category Shane falls into in 6 weeks time!

Shane off to a hot start, -3 through 3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,002 ✭✭✭coillcam

Some start. Talk about putting last week in the rear view mirror.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,723 ✭✭✭boardise

Looks like a typical Shane sizzle → Shane fizzle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,544 ✭✭✭Trampas

it is. Gets into lead then starts bogeying and birds come back. Deja vu

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,544 ✭✭✭Trampas

-3 after 6 and -2 after 13. Then signing for a level par. He won’t be pleased.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,544 ✭✭✭Trampas

Could be put on the clock as over a full hole behind

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,407 ✭✭✭TheRiverman

The obligatory bogey at the first and an awful finish. Unfortunately another one of his disappointing days.

    Is he guaranteed next week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,544 ✭✭✭Trampas

Pretty much I believe. Need something out of the ordinary. With Scottie and Macintyre clear helps than someone way behind him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭dublin49

    good 67 today,safely thru

Only the second time in his career that he has made the Tour Championship.

Now has a slightly worse than 1 in 30 chance of winning the Fed Ex Cup to end his year in a blaze of glory.

He's certainly still playing well enough in patches, if he can put 4 good rounds together it could prove very lucrative indeed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,002 ✭✭✭coillcam

The money is bananas. $10m first place. 8th or better gets $1m and it's only a 30 man field. Guaranteed $350k just for togging out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭dublin49

last place money is more than you would get for winning most DP World tour events, ,very lucrative even at the bottom of the top.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭dublin49

Shane got 2 or 3 million extra payment at season end last year for his Fedex finish, needs high finish to get this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,890 ✭✭✭abff

5 of the 6 automatic places on the Ryder Cup team are now decided. Shane just missed out on scoring enough points to catch Hatton, who is now guaranteed a place on the team while Shane can be caught by Rasmus Hojgaard, who only needs to finish 17th or better in next weekend’s British Masters.

Assuming that happens, 3 of the remaining 6 places are pretty much certain to go to Straka, Aberg and Hovland. Rahm is also favoured to get a pick, leaving only 2 places up for grabs. If Matt Fitzpatrick wins the British Masters and Harry Hall significantly outperforms Shane in the Tour Championship, Shane’s ‘certainty’ of getting a pick may come under threat.

I hope it doesn’t come to that, but I’ll have my fingers firmly crossed over the weekend.

could see Fitzpatrick getting a pick ahead of Shane, not Harry who?

Lowry will almost certainly get a pick ahead of Hall and Fitz. He's played in two already. Fitz has been abysmal and Hall doesn't have the experience.

Fitz needs to win the British Masters and Hall needs the Tour CShip or British Masters to get picked.
