Wouldn't say you'll get many connecting, especially on the TOS-DUB flight – the transatlantics will be more or less gone by the time that lands.

Alright. Just Irish and Norwegians then. I’m not sure if that will keep it going. As I wrote, Norwegians do like a booze-cruise to Dublin…but that far North there’s not all that many people.

Lads that route is pretty much exclusively to capture the instagram hunters domestically in Ireland. You have 2 flights a week for about 12 weeks, so 24 flights which is about 4.5k pax. Assuming break even ends up being the industry standard 70%, they need about 3200 people to buy tickets. If they throw the likes of Roz Purcell etc freebies to promote it on their socials early doors then its not that much of a reach to see them getting 1600 instahuns and their boyfriends to go over the course of 3 months.

There'll be sfa coming from Tromso and less again connecting (if that's even a possibility).

If it’s priced right and the return to Dublin is late enough in the day, you could attract Norwegian travellers for that flight. Tromsø’s catchment covers a lot of Northern Norway and during that time of year you could get a good few people wanting a city-break to Dublin. However, that’s kind of a «one-and-done» for many people and that’s only if the ticket price isn’t so bad. Otherwise IE won’t really be competing with SAS or Norwegian who can offer more frequent flights to DUB via a connection at OSL.

Interesting that Aer Lingus are starting a seasonal route to Tromso. I hope it does well for them. It's a beautiful place. I did Dublin - Oslo - Tromso back in November 2021 with SAS. The flight was reasonable enough at €240. The hotels were very expensive though.

Any idea if there will be more flights to Cardiff added this winter? Looking to go over on the St. Brigid's bank holiday weekend (end of Jan, start of Feb). All I can see at the moment are late night flights.

4th daily Turkish flight on Tuesday, Thursdays and Sundays in winter. Can’t find a source but it’s bookable. Departs DUB at 6:25AM landing in IST at 14:00

Great choice of route for the winter.. Been twice to Tromso, once with SAS/Norwegian through Oslo, then earlier this year with Wideroe through Bergen… Highly recommend it not only for Northern Lights hunting but also other nature/outdoor activities… True accommodation can be pricey.

Given TUI is pulling its Irish flights, could Tunisair or Nouvelair be looking at DUB now?

    • Both have flown to DUB in the past for years
    • Irish arrivals to Tunisia are up 97% compared to 2024, higher than any other European country: https://news-tunisia.tunisienumerique.c ... nisia/amp/
    • TUI pulling out leaves a gap, and I’ve been looking at those flights myself, a few have sold out and all seem to have over 90% load factors.
    • Both are getting new short haul fleet later this year and early next year
    • Morocco routes, even niche ones like Rabat are doing quite well. Not quite the same but relevant

The reason I ask is because I’m planning to go next Summer, and am wondering if there’s a point in waiting around to see if a direct flight is launched.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see TUI or another operator launching flights just using another airline.
TUI are behind Fly4 airlines who are currently recruiting for crew based in Dublin.
It’s possible they will operate some/certain flights for TUI

Thank you for the response. Would using Fly4 give them scope to increase frequencies, as the flights were doing quite well? My plan was a 4-5 day trip to Tunis, so Nouvelair/Tunisair would have been preferable, but I definitely wouldn’t mind flying into NBE.

Haven't the used Smartlynx and the like ex DUB already? They also sell seats on mainline carriers already right?

There's a direct to Tunisia from Belfast. Depending on where you live that may be worth considering.

I’m based in Cork so Belfast would be a bit too far for me. Really appreciate the suggestion though, if nothing materialises from Dublin, I’ll probably just go with Air France or Lufthansa from Cork.

Any news on developments of Riyadh Air? Will they add DUB in the near future? If so will it kick out the likes of Etihad?

    https://www.airwaysmag.com/new-post/riyadh-airs-plan-2025-beyond

“We’ll take a mix of A321neos and LRs. The LR’s range suits us well for flying deeper into Europe or Southeast Asia. If you map a radius from Riyadh, it reaches the UK, Ireland, and parts of Asia. That’s where we plan to grow.”

flight days aren’t great for a weekend but it’s a start

Looks like they're trying to emulate the same model as the ME3. If they can compete on price they may have a shot. It's worth noting that as a Saudi airline, Riyadh will very likely be a Dry Airline with no alchohol served. Not a problem for myself personally, but I can imagine that potentially putting others off, especially if the price isn't competitve with the ME3.

Yea seems a bit odd only to have weekend flights, so aiming for the Vacationers market rather than city breaks..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,516 ✭✭✭Blut2

I don't think that will be a huge issue, even in Ireland a large percentage of people don't drink when traveling long haul, nevermind Muslim countries. And a good chunk of the ones who do will be price sensitive above all else.

If the cost savings from not carrying, and not serving for free, large amounts of alcohol, help reduce fares that will be the primary thing most people care about.

I would suspect very few people will choose Emirates over Riyadh if the fare is 50euro cheaper on Riyadh, just for the booze, if the flight times and in flight experience otherwise are comparable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 285 ✭✭Touristx73

AFAIK they want to boost traffic to and from Riyadh itself, not compete with EK/QR

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,915 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

You could be right in choosing over the ME 3, but there’s 2 factors for me which are critical
    1) their luggage allowance. I fly to CPT at least twice a month. Etihad don’t fly there but the other 2 do, & both allow 2x23kgs for hold luggage &

    2) Their onward destinations. I have no proof but I’d guess a big % of the ME3 traffic are onwards travellers.

Anyhow, have SA confirmed yet, or are we back in the speculation territory?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 285 ✭✭Touristx73

Not a direct confirmation of DUB but they did say this:

If you map a radius from Riyadh, it reaches the UK, Ireland, and parts of Asia. That’s where we plan to grow.”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Noxegon

I'm intrigued that ME3 are even in contention for you if you're going to CPT that often. You'll spend quite a few more hours in the air than you would on KL/AF/BA.

All of the ME3 are a poor option for flying to CPT duration-wise, and in timings for jetlag, especially if you're doing it regularly. Why don't you route through AMS, CDG or LHR?

The 6am flight from DUB via AMS to arrive in CPT same day at 10pm is always my preference doing that route. Particularly if you can swing business class for the long overnight flight back, then both journeys really minimise the pain / jetlag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,516 ✭✭✭Blut2

If Riyadh are targeting airports like DUB, as they've stated, then its highly unlikely to be for Ireland to Saudi point to point traffic. Demand would be nowhere strong enough for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,915 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

Perhaps yes but the ME2 ( Etihad don’t fly to CPT ) offer the 2 x 23 kgs luggage which is double what the European airlines offer ( afaik they only offer 1 x 23kg.)

Was about to point that out. When you are owned by an oil state, you don't have to worry as much about the fuel bill. This is one reason the EU are trying to ban tankering but that still won't fully offset this.
