Anyone dealt with eFlow sending toll notices to the wrong address? €6,000 fine here…

    Hey guys, I need some advice about a problem with eFlow and N50 tolls.

    I’ve just been informed that I have 35 unpaid M50 journeys from August–September 2024, with a total penalty of €6,000. These journeys don’t appear in my eFlow account, and I’ve never received any warnings about them.

    Here’s the background: In August 2024, we changed our car, and in mid-September 2024, we moved to a new house. After we moved, the landlord also changed, so there was no way for us to get any mail sent to the old address. We updated our address both in the logbook via the Garda and directly with eFlow. Despite this, the toll notices for those journeys were still sent to the old address — although all recent notifications have been sent to our current address.

    My questions:

    1. How many notices would usually be issued for 35 unpaid journeys?
    2. If I had officially updated my address, isn’t it the company’s fault for sending notices to the wrong address?
    3. Can anyone recommend a solicitor in Ireland who deals with this kind of case?

    Any advice or shared experiences would be hugely appreciated

    Sounds like a made up story.

    Why didn’t you pay any of the tolls?

    You knew you went over the bridge.

    A girl who worked in our place got some fines similar to yourself. Bearing in mind she's living in Galway and wasn't exactly on the M50 on a daily basis. Turned out in fact that her reg was cloned and she was able to prove it because on one of the days she was allegedly on the M50 she was actually in the UK in the same car and she had her ferry tickets to prove it.

    The toll company sorted it once she forwarded it to them.

    There are 3 or 4 notices for each journey. So around 105 to 140 notices in total.

    Why didn’t you pay the toll?

    First of all, rude… I use the toll regularly and pay for it — in fact, out of roughly 135 total journeys, about 100 were paid without any issue.

    Here’s the actual problem: Before moving house in mid-September, I changed my car. I was waiting for the new logbook, but it never arrived. It turns out it was sent to my old address, and because the landlord had also changed, I had no way of accessing it. I then reported the address change to the Garda, and my new logbook arrived at my new address.

    Despite that, all toll notices for that period continued to be sent to my old address, so I never received them — even though my address had been officially updated. That’s how those 35 unpaid journeys happened, and now x Solicitors is asking me for €6,000.

    I’ve paid every toll I was aware of :( It seems I was late in registering my new car on the system, which is why these charges never showed up in my eFlow account. From what they told me, the notices for these unpaid tolls were sent based on my licence plate to my old address — and even after I updated my address, they kept sending them there.

    At the time, I was right in the middle of moving house, and I had around 150 crossings in total during that period. All except these 35 were paid.

    How did you do the change of address via the Gardaí? I’m not aware of them having anything to do with such matters.

    Shortly before moving house, I changed my car. I was waiting for the logbook to arrive, but as the move happened quite suddenly, it was due to be sent to my old address. However, the logbook did not reach me before I moved. After that, I could not obtain any of my documents from my landlord, as the property had changed ownership.

    As I was unsure what the correct procedure was in such a situation, I went to the Gardaí. I was asked to sign some papers and was informed that a new logbook would be sent to my new address, which it was. Many other official documents were also sent to my new address. However, it appears that despite my car no longer being registered at my old address, notices continued to be sent there.

    Over time, the fees accumulated to a total of €6,000. As I mentioned, I use the toll roads very frequently, and throughout this entire process I have paid all of my toll charges — at least all of the ones I was made aware of.

    Contact Eflow and have a conversation with them on what your options are. Of they still want to go down the legal route, get yourself a solicitor.

    Although I have never been in your situation, I have found Eflow to be quite reasonable all it is worth a try.

    Get yourself a tag or a video account afterwards and you'll never miss a payment again. Besides, with the tag or video, you get a discount on the tolls. Think how much you could have saved over paying each one individually.

    I’m fairly certain that all communication needs to be done through the solicitors office once you start getting the solicitors letters

    You seem to be pissed off with the solicitors considering you keep mentioning them in bold lettering. I'm not even sure if it's allowed to bring them into the thread.

    maybe missing something but why didn’t you pay? If you were using m50. If things were in a flux with house / car reg you could see that in the account the toll wasn’t recorded or if you pay as go, just enter reg into eflow ?

    If I understand correctly, they failed to send the notices to your correct address even though you updated everything. That being the case, it would be very easy to gain the upper hand. That does sound odd though as all this stuff is automated.

    I previously forgot to pay m50 toll and got the notice and again failed to pay in time. I believe it went up to over 100 euro. Rang them up, said Iwasn't aware of it and didn't get any reminder until it was over 100 quid.

    The guy basically put words in my mouth. He said you are rarely in Dublin and were not aware...... we can waive that penalty just pay the original toll so overall very good to deal with.

    I firmly believe that this type of comment is a key reason for the decline in Boards traffic.
    People come to forums such as this, precisely because they have strange questions or scenarios.



    In any case, the OP is only missing about 25% of their tolls. If they were going over it regularly, for a set period of time (eg: working in a different location), they wouldn't necessarily notice that they hadn't paid €140 worth of tolls, especially not in the midst of moving house. If my eFlow bill jumped or dropped by 25% one month I wouldn't notice it really.

    Eflow won't tell you how many journeys you have outstanding if you don't have an account, so you have no choice but to wait for a letter.

    If I travel over the bridge at 00:01 on Monday and 00:01 on Tuesday, and pay for 2 tolls at 8.01pm on Wednesday, I'll get issued a fine for Monday, and have credit applied for a future journey. If for XYZ reason I don't have access to the address, I'll never find out about it until the fine is outrageous.

    Do up a table (with date and time) of each of the tolls over the period, including the ones you paid for, when you changed the car, when you notified them, when you went to the gerda etc, when you next paid a toll and when you eventually found out about these tolls.

    Then, armed with that try them on the phone. You will need to explain the timeline clearly as your messages here are a bit hard to follow.

    If you don't get anywhere, try in writing, if you don't get anywhere engage a solicitor, who will need the log of events in any case.

    If a payment is needed for some of this go to MABS and they will set up a payment plan. I used to work in MABS and it was unbelievable how many people came in with large debts for EFlow. Always sorted through good communication.

    There have been dozens of articles over the years of these cases going to court and getting thrown out as soon as the tolls are paid. Eflow will jump at the chance to accept the payment for the 35 tolls.

    The OP says they didn't pay for 35 of them and have been fined. In this message they also admitted they didnt pay for 35 of them.

    OP, I assume you've records of you trying to pay the those 35 tolls? And a record of you trying tomoay for the 35 fines also?

    You must have been aware OP…

    The 35 unpaid tolls must cover a certain period when the account was not running 'correctly' so, in that period how did you not realise the tolls were not being debited to your account - when I change car I check the next couple of times through the toll to see it has been taken but also to ensure there are no more charges on my old car.

    35 is quite a lot and could be 1 month of work days back and forth.

    if, I was encountering difficulties registering address or car then I would either switch to manual payment each time through the tolls until sorted or, keep a close eye on it.

    If during the period of 35 charges some were charged to e-flow and some not then you may have an argument that it was their admin but, you still have some duty to check.

    What sort of nonsense story is this?

    The gardi dont deal with vehicle change of ownership or replacing VRC documents. You would have

    with the Dept of Transport for that.

    Odd though, The last time I had to get a replacement I just contacted Dpt of Transport and it was all sorted by them. I didn't have to go near a garda station.

    Sounds like a perfect storm of issues. Moving house, changing car, previous landlord changing, full moon etc. Just call eflow and explain the situation, they'll see your history of 100 payments and accept the payment for the 35 tolls. They'll probably insist you set up an account for DD to cut down on the chance of missed payments in the future.
