Ah you can't say that was Mullahoran at their best with the wides, dropped short, and missed shots. Mullahoran looked way better than Ramor yesterday, apart from the scoreboard. They're creating chances so sort the shooting and they can get better. They do seem to match up well vs Ramor recently though. We'll see next weeks vs Castlerahan if they have improved

    *Sorry in reply to this

What's the rough age profile of that Mullahoran team? I was impressed by them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 250 ✭✭tazman06

Fairly young. Lot of lads are late teens early 20s and coming off a number of good minor teams. Still have a few older lads like Gunner and Duffer, while only some like Cormac O'Reilly is mid 20s. Bit of an issue is the middle group of mid to late 20s. A lot of lads missing due to emigration Gavin Brady, Callum Mussi etc are away. While it was a bit of a lean period in the club anyway, those losses are a bit exacerbated. If they had their full compliment of middle and experienced players, you could fairly integrate in the youth quite well and I'd be sure they'd give the Championship a rattle in next few years

Killygarry fortunate to draw laragh in round 2. They will be the whipping boys going by the ballyhaise scoreline.

Thanks. Glad to see them back at the top table and hopefully they can back that up. Emigration has been the ruin of many a strong country team.

Lots of opposition to <c Cabe on Facebook and Twitter too it seems. He's not very popular.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭Thunderbirds

I'm actually disgusted with that appointment.

A game against Castlerahan or Laragh will tell you nothing. I wouldn’t be getting excited over a result against them if you have aspirations of challenging at senior.

Best of luck to Dermott MacCabe on his appointment.

Well I do expect Castlerahan to be better than that, especially after a decent enough League where they just missed out on a semi spot. Be do mean more about shooting which was quite poor Sunday night. But also to see if they are breaking away from the middle of the pack more towards the top. Need to make a statement I suppose. Game is Ballymachugh so tight enough venue

Best of luck to McCabe. Seems to be a bit divisive between supporters and probably even players, but sure look, maybe someone with a thick neck is needed. Word was some current players approached him to run for this. He probably did want the gig soon, but maybe expected Galligan to do his 3rd year and he'd have had 2 years done in Westmeath by then. By all accounts he is a very shrewd football mind and reads the game well. Lord knows we could do with a manager who can look at the game under the new rules and might be able to come up with a plan and system that would work for us and/or change on the fly as we see things during a game

If he comes in and does well, then that works for me. He really does seem to love Cavan football anyway in his way, and what I would like to see is if he sticks at it. Not sure what way this works with the day job (as he's about the place anyway, no harm to be there prepping for Seniors too) and if he takes U20s too or has a role overseeing. We continually see elsewhere that managers who stay in place for longer than the 2 years can solidify and get results. If we get that continuity and we get results then I'll be happy. Lots of ifs there though

I have many reasons to personally dislike the man and this appointment but I will refrain from going after his character online. If he takes us to the promised land I'll eat gladly eat the pie. But his results will be fair game for scrutiny.

More than anything Mr. McCabe I would just ask that you be honest with yourself. No deflection. No scapegoating. No buckpassing. We all want the same thing here so handle the feedback like a man and a leader. That feedback may come in the form of player dissatisfaction, criticism from supporters, local media opinion, and differing views from your own management team. That all goes with the territory. It may be personal. But it probably won't be. How you react to it and manage it is what matters most.

    Good luck.

Were you disgusted with the last appointment? Say what you like about the Gowna Development Manager, and I’m no fan of him, but he has more managerial experience than the last man in the role.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭rrs

Promised land as in Ulster title? It's a tough enough job no matter who took it. An aging team and Faulkner going travelling. i don't know what is the expectation is, its a different from when Mickey Graham took over with a team in the peak

Big positive is he had Westmeath playing attacking football. They were regulated but were not badly shown up in the league. We have a better panel than them, so I would suspect a more attack minded set up.

While he jas rightfully taken some attacks over the youth set up, he knows the players coming through and what they bring so another positive.

The Gowna teams he was involved in these past few years played good football too.

All we ask of managers to to get the best out of the lads consistently and play a good brand of football.

There is a massive rebuild incoming, some lads will be stepping away over the next few years but with Paddy Lynch, McEvoy, Carolan , O'Donnell among others still about the spine of a good team is there.

I can until they beat someone of note, the only team they beat of note in the league was Arva and they were missing a number of main players outside of their county men.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,125 ✭✭✭Akabusi

That's about right, maybe swap the Gaels and Ballyhaise, they did run KC close in the end. In the junior, Enda Henry is a massive loss so they might not be top any longer.

Beat the Gaels in Champ last year which was at the time a team above them. Wouldn't be looking at Mullahoran in the League. 3 county men missing (along with some U20s too). no one ever judged Mullahoran on league, but on Championship. Look, not getting the win vs Ramor is annoying. But to have kicked away so much and drawn with an unbeaten team who are regarded as top 3 is hardly being at their best. It is simply not the case. With a shooting % increase they can be better is all I'm saying. Do need a statement win though

Martin Tynan is taking it well.

Well it seems like a farce of a process but what can we do now but wish him well and hopefully he can get players behind him and prove doubters wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 South of the Bann

You could be right; Will get a better indication of what the Gaels are like this weekend v Gowna. Same with Kcourt and Ballyhaise.

Junior has potential to be very interesting. Belturbet not as far ahead as many expected pre championship and the Enda Henry injury a further leveller also. Opens the door for 3 or 4 teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 South of the Bann

    Absolute farce of a process.

Given the job without a finalized backroom team or competitive process.

The backroom team is arguably more important than any manager in most counties.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭Thunderbirds

I'm not mentioning the candidate but the process has being shocking. No mention of backroom teams, candidate got from the office in Breffni and an interview conducted with one person, no effort made to seek a potential external candidate. Whatever about the last manager, at least it was handled properly. This is absolutely farcical. Even the way it was announced was wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭celt262

Backroom team wouldn't might not be much use there hardy going to try and tell himself what to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 551 ✭✭✭Thunderbirds

Would have being nice to hear the alternative backroom team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 Custard_Cream

It is what it is now at this stage so we may as well get behind it.

In terms of background team, if I was too hazard a guess I would think he will bring along Mark McHugh and Fintan Reilly who he has worked with in recent time . McHugh was highly regarded in Westmeath and obviously has the Cavan connection..

After that it could be anyone, I would hope he also tries to bring in someone with lots of intercounty experience at a good level.. Maybe a Stephen Rocthford or a Dessie Farrell. If either of the above got involved it would lift the mood around this appointment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 large_palette

It's subjective enough but anything to cheer about like div 1 promotion, Ulster final appearance, or supporting our county in the month of July. Within the first 2 years.

I'm not interested in excuses especially before a ball is even kicked.

It was a farce with the last candidate too. Sure why do you think the Shercock man who runs the CU in Virginia (I won’t risk the ire of Celt262 on spelling again) walked away?

It was known weeks before who had the job. No proper process whatsoever.

Nothing will change in there either. They just move around the seats..
