A lot of what he's doing is technically illegal but it would require a DOJ or Congress with a spine to pull him up on it.

An Executive order is not law in the vast majority of cases - It's largely nothing more than a strong recommendation that should be then processed/ratified by Congress but at present they are just being implemented as diktat by a supine Congress and Civil service.

The deadline for divesture or closure of TikTok was enshrined in legislation. He has simply chosen not to enforce it.

While not completely unprecedented (the DOJ frequently directs "priorities" for enforcement), it is unheard of to so brazenly just announce he won't follow the law on the matter cause he has decided not to.

I'm not so sure about "easily". The majority in the House is razor thin and they only barely got the BBB through. There is a reason there is essentially no legislation passing this year beyond that.

Hence the "In Theory" - He's doing it this way for that very reason , he'd struggle to get most of it through as having to actually put their names to this stuff would give any number of GOP House and Senate members endless night terrors.

Oh wtf is he doing now. Moving homeless people out of the capitol... And putting the city under federal control. National guard. Power grab?

The National guard that he spent the last 4+ years telling everyone the President has no control over..

He's pushing to find an excuse to remove DC's special status making it that much harder for a future Democrat government to give it Statehood.

    It's a pre-emptive gerrymander..

Plus a handy distraction from people talking about him being in the Epstein files.....

At least Hitler had a Reichstag fire as a pretext.

Nothing so clever (IMO) more that he can brag on Truth Social about the monies he's got (coughs gently) flowing into the U.S. Just don't mention that the money was probably put up front by the companies from their U.S profits before the chips were even packaged for export. Trump might be a free-spending wally but the treasury isn't.

Still won't work..It's all so utterly transparent..

Every post from him and his mouth pieces about some distraction or other is flooded with replies that are a variant of "Blah blah blah , release the Epstein files"

I hope the press keep their eyes on the prize, and not look at the keys he is jangling instead

Edit - I see he is telling reporters he is meeting Putin in Russia (it's not) and waffling on, saying Democrats "want transgender for everybody"???

Trump said that 800 National Guardsmen have been deployed to assist local law enforcement in Washington DC. He also said that he will more than needed if necessary.

At least 800 guardsmen with more coming down the tracks if things go belly up in Washington very quickly.

If this is happening right now. This sh1t is going to be creating a major political & public safety storm since the January 6th insurrection. And it's going to bring on an intense amount of misery & suffering to the people of DC for no reason whatsoever other than to keep Trump's ego in check.

If any Irish person is in Washington DC right now; try and get out of there right now before it's too late.

The guy who pardoned the Jan 6th rioters now claims to be concerned about DC crime. Nothing but a naked distraction from the Epstein files. Despicable c*nt.

Yes he does, though as Washington DC is an administrative, not a state, it does not have a governor who would be the person nominally in charge of the National Guard units there. I'll leave the actual where-for on how to mobilise and task the NG units there on "presence in aid of the civil power" duties and limitations to a person versed in the practice.

What Trump might have in his mind for the troops tasks more than probably veers way offside to the callout tasks the NG can be legally allotted. I had in mind the thought that he might have feared, in his mind, that while he was away meeting Putin in Alaska that some-one might have made a move against him. His memory is not that bad that he has forgotten that he turned a "peaceful protest" into a mob who tried to help him take over power in Washington DC.

Edit: according to RTE, Trump has taken the Washington DC Police Dept under federal control under a Home Rule act he quoted from. That would deprive the mayor from having any law and order input on what happens to her city.

I think this is ascribing way, way too much forethought to the guy.

If Trump doesn't want criminals in DC, does that mean he's going to permanently move back to Florida.

I would say there's a good chance the chips sold in to China aren't manufactured in the US so it's more of a tariff on the exports of another country.

On the Ukraine peace talks front, Michael Weiss, a journalist, wrote a short Facebook item about the differences between Putin and Washington on whom and what would be discussed at the Alaska Meet. It seems Witkoff took up what was told to him by Putin wrong and Putin did not say Russia would swop territory with Ukraine as part of the peace deal. It looks like Witkoff had to backtrack on his statement fast, and accept that Putin is intent on holding onto, at least, Crimea and maybe other parts of Ukraine he sees as strategically important to Russia.

If there's a deal done in Alaska, it'll probably be done without Ukraine being represented at the meeting, so it'll be worth as much as Trump and Putin assign it, like the pacts Putin made with Ukraine in the past, dishonoured at their pleasure. I cant see even something as a face-saver for Trump coming from the meeting, if he even decides to go to it, given the Europeans standing with Zelenskyy.

Sending the National Guard to a nation's capitol under a guise of 'eliminating crime and homelessness'.

Seems totally normal and not at all with alternative motives.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,785 ✭✭✭amandstu

What motives do you ascribe to this.?

    A distraction from JE?

An attempt to look for scapegoats to fuel anger and division on the country?

Is he on a fishing expedition so that he can find illegal immigrants?

An attempt to accuse Democrats of being soft on crime?

    Just "look strong"?

(I understand his previous position on Jan6 was that he could not deploy the NG-not that his word stands for anything)

January 6th he had the power to deploy them…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,356 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

Which is probably why he didn't walk down Pennsylvania Avenue with his peaceful protest fans that day. If things had turned bad for them that day, he would have been in the thick of it.

It's the medians, it's the bad, broken medians. The metal things on the roadways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,823 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

And the only mention from the investigation was to get them to protect HIM, not the city.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,552 ✭✭✭✭Jelle1880

I think he hopes something bad happens to give him the excuse to enact a national emergency.

It fixes all of the the national security concerns over the export of cutting edge AI chips and technology to China and it's military.

"Nvidia has previously told markets that bans on sales to China cost it $10.5 billion in the first half of 2025"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,356 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

On the face of it, it seems to be a payment for a licence solely to export the chips to China, not a payment directly to the sale costs of the chips put separately on the exporter or the importer and buyer. Call it baksheesh, greasing the palm. The Chinese have a term for it.

Convicted felon complains about crime, in a city with a historic low crime rate, and in the same city he himself caused a riot in, and then pardoned the criminals who carried out that riot.

Apparently things are proceeding as planned in the Trump Admin. The President announces he's calling in the N.G to bring law and order back to Washington D.C and is federalizing the local Police Dept to assist in his plan as Washington is under the control of criminal street gangs. Shortly afterwards, the head of the FBI stands up next to him and announces that the murder rate is falling, crime is going down. Now if that is an example of MAGA planning, I think it's time to say goodbye to the U.S. as a central plank in world affairs.

Yes ,I should have added that to the list.It was on my mind,of course. They are prodding the Dems and others.

If they don't react they are complicit and if they do react they are marxist revolutionaries(and there is your crackdown accompanied by as many attempts to shift the blame by the liar in chief - eg he "only wants peace")
