    Thank you! I also noticed some bugs since they introduced some full pages ads.

    Im worried about privacy. Gagging for money. I don't feel safe. I'll give money, but not until I feel secure as opposed to being berated.

    Attack the post, not the poster. Seems to have gone out the window in this thread.

    Im late to this discussion.....

    Been here years, love the place, would hate to see it go.

    May have been answered already, but what happens my sub if the place goes wallop?

    Also agree that adding the ads now at this point is madness...its even driving me, a long time almost daily user away...doesn't inspire confidence that if I do sign up for a sub that the place will survive

    In fairness, myself and others have raised the fact that the ads in their current form will drive users from the platform. They take up an entire page and pop up after a handful of clicks and they do actively impact the experience. Eg opening a thread jumps to the latest post if an ad popups

    Do you think users are likely to disable their ad blockers if that's how it's handled? Running ads that people will happily choose to block simply isn't gonna work. I can't think of any sites that are running ads in that way any more. The rollout of the ads doesn't encourage subscribers and comes across like the vanilla move, it doesn't inspire confidence. The response to the feedback feels more like ignoring the feedback.

    As I understand it, it's more like "Ads as implemented previously are no longer viable, due to a drop in how much revenue they generate (which is not unique to boards)".

    I do agree that the timing of launching a subscriber system that's ad-free at the same time as overhauling the site's ad system to make the ads more intrusive doesn't look great, but if the "we have 90 days to turn things around" statement is accurate - and I don't see any reason to disbelieve it - I expect there's an element of needs-must.

    I've seen this on other sites where e.g. comment systems were replaced with the IMO truly awful OpenWeb system (think Disqus but more ad-riddled, buggy and generally awful to use). Those sites' owners admitted that the change was driven by a need to increase advertising return, and one easy option is to make tweaks to serve up more ads.

    I'd _love_ to see more users on the site. Not sure how that can be easily achieved, mind you. Advertising campaigns require a certain amount of investment to pay off ( you need to hit enough density to achieve the repetition effect for them to work, is how I've seen it described). A german Mastodon instance recently ran an advertising billboard for their service for a week, but despite the ad generating traffic in the sense of people sharing photos, it only led to a single new user. So things like ad campaign planning, surveys, audience studies would all cost money that the site likely doesn't have available at the moment...

    You are missing the point there. A very small percentage of people will subscribe, the entire media world is having this problem in getting people to pay for content. A discussion forum needs an engaged user base to be any value to anyone. This has been dropping away in recent years and especially since the migration. These new ads are going to drive more people away, and there will be less point in anyone else subscribing to a site with even fewer users than it has now

    I enjoy Boards & I have been here for a long time. I think there is a market for fora especially for people who want real discussion.

    I think that it's possible to market Boards as somewhere to get real help & where your voice will be heard.

    Has anyone heard or seen Boards promoting themselves?

    It's quite disappointing to see the plan is more ads and get subscribers from existing users. If this continues your subscriber count may go up but overall userbase is going to drop off.

    What about a plan to gain more users? Or as was highlighted previously, why not look at merch? Or sponsorship deals?

    Realistically the site is probably unlikely to get a lot of new users ads or no ads. Most people now probably use X or Reddit for their fix so Boards need to monetise the current user base. Just wondering how many active users are there, as in users who post rather than just browse, nor the total of registered users? The number of active users has certainly fallen since the Vanilla debacle and is very apparent on some forums and counting all registered users as possible subscribers is a bit optimistic if they no longer actively take part.

    If you've ever bough anything online you've given your personal details to a payment processing website and have you been scammed or had any negative issues with it?

    Note: there is no GDPR issues with these questions, just trying to discover the major reluctance in using a secure payment processing site to donate to a site you love and say you really want to donate to.

    The reality is it's not 2005 anymore.

    I'd say most of us arrived here originally looking for an answer to something.

    We got that answer and ended up staying and getting other answers and engaging in all sorts of ways.

    That doesn't happen anymore.

    If someone wants an answer for something they use Google which will provide them with a AI generated overview, or they will go straight to YouTube to see a video of how to do something.

    Message boards and discussion forms are the old Internet, you can't in 2025 drive under engagement to the old Internet.

    This was always going to happen, all the owners are doing is trying to keep it alive for as long as possible.

    Instead it's being filled with a lot of irrelevant posts.
