So even in your own post you admit that there is practically no hope and this is just a wind down fund.... and yet your having a go at people for questioning this, as an excuse for not contributing.

You want us to throw more bad money after yours ...no thanks..if you think that's an excuse fair enough.

The tone of the responses from owners mods and paid subscribers does not come across well....and I've never had an issue with mods or never in the CA forum. Another of my excuses there.

Your (everyone) replies are read by all, even if you directing them at a small user base that my warranty it .

    Excellent post.

I would pay up, but I do not trust the links or security.

In saying that, I do think boards.ie is worthwhile. Great discussions(and yes scraps), but I have no confidence in my bic/Iban not being used maliciously. Not that they'd get much.

Don't have PayPal. I will look into it even though the baskets keep banning me.

I don't think someone having your BIC/IBAN is much use to them.

The volume of posts seems to be rapidly declining across the site from what I've seen. You can almost see Boards dying in real time. Tragic.

This thread isn't very encouraging with regards to helping gain more sign ups, from either side of the debate.

I haven't subscribed for my own reasons, and my own reasons are in relation to the actions of one mod in the past (and no, I wasn't ever banned, I believe I've had two yellows in the 15+ years I've been here, both deserved!).

But this sh!te of lambasting all the mods and demanding oversight of mods in return for a sub is ridiculous.

The insulting of posters who give a valid reason for not wanting to sub is ridiculous too. It's a discussion forum, you're going to get oppositional views, no need to be snide.

The response to the full page ads is particularly tone deaf.

But with that being said, boards itself is and always has been a brilliant resource. Because of my mentioned reasons, I won't be subbing because I'm also no longer a regular user of boards as a result, but most mods are bang on, and work hard for free to try to keep the site useable.

You've never been banned!? Got to try harder. It easy…depending on your honesty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,117 ✭✭✭✭muffler

And there it is. The real reason why you won't pay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,981 ✭✭✭jj880

I don't regret subbing. If Boards closes up so be it. When the request came out for subs I thought it would be everyone give what funds allow and see how it goes. Never entered my mind to differentiate between subbed v not subbed.

However Ive been thinking about it since this morning. To be called a "beggar" for having a link to the subscription page in my signature by gurners demanding all their petty grievances are met before they've even given up a penny does stick in the craw. Its like a weird reverse shamefest from feckers who probably arent going to give anything anyway. No wonder theyre banned from some forum with logic like that. They can eat a ball of their own shyite.

If I get banned for this post that's fair enough. I'll take it on the chin. What wont happen is me going to some other part of Boards to demand (some might even say BEG) I get unbanned before I'll sub again.

You're not wrong. The amount of negativity oozing from a lot of posters on this thread is impressive. I've always believed that Boards is a truer reflection of the individual than the person in the flesh. The perceived anonymity means that a lot of people drop the masks and let Mr Hyde off the leash on here. Which means there's a lot more miserable bast*ds out there in society than one would imagine.

What's surprising or maybe shouldn't be surprising for me, are the posters over on the motors forum. I would have thought that anyone buying a new car would be able to afford the €50. At this stage, most boardsies are aware subs are needed to keep the site going. But no, most of the posters over there haven't subscribed, including many with thousands of posts. Maybe the new cars are just a PCP illusion of having some disposable income. Or maybe they think subscribing is something the rest of us can do for them. Or maybe they think subscribing is for idiots. Dunno…

not sure what you are going on about there in your 2nd paragraph.

Do you need to have a new car now to post in motors?

When did that become a requirement to posting in motors?

    "A lot of negativity ".....

Continues with negative and bizarre post, ends up talking about PCP!

Ah boards...I will miss bits of it like above.

It isn't for the vast vast majority.

If people are finding it easy to get banned maybe they should have a look at themselves/their postings.

Oh wait its easier to whine about mods than taking any responsibility for your own postings.

    Mike, I don't know you from Adam but that's a terrible post/pitch.

Firstly you're describing the ads as a 'campaign'. It implies a militarily thought out process and this is just one step. A campaign no less. Sounds like something happening in the Middle East.

You should be focusing on community, positive user experience, boards rich heritage.

I'd be sending you to a few farmers selling livestock on how to sweeten a deal and play up the positives. A bit of basic marketing and sales technique wouldn't go astray. I don't mean this to sound disrespectful, but people skills, management, and getting the best out of them takes years of experience and you’re always learning.

A site that has been flickering away for 9 months..what will we do to get subs? Saturate it with ads.

You click through ads, hold the phone for 10 seconds till the flickering stops. You'd have more pleasure playing snake on your Nokia 3310 in 2003.

Christ you couldn't make it up😅

I've had a few warnings, had a few overturned. My only ban, on this account at least, was when the no appeal rule was brought in to CA. I'd say the only reason I don't have a few more is because I stopped using the site as much due to the bouncing issues.

It's easy to pick up a ban or two when mods won't consider the context or intent behind a post

If it was myself coordinating subs I'd probably try this.

Right we're at 600 paid subs. I'd message the main mods across boards. Ask them to have a look at their threads and identify good solid posters, they're familiar with, who haven't subscribed.

PM them and tell them they're valued members, their contributions are always excellent. Ask them would they consider signing up. Outline clearly where the sub would go and future site plans.

If 100 mods messaged 15 posters and got 5 to subscribe, you'd have 500 subs. The message could be pretty generic with a username change. But getting a PM makes it.. personal.

I post in Weather, Dorcarch and Meteorite are mods who I'd interact with. Shembuc in GAA etc. The mods of sites would interact with several posters.

I think that is an excellent idea. Mass appeals are good, but a personal request is 10x more powerful (and harder to ignore).

I routinely check the status of everyday posters I'd see in the forum's I favourite, 8 or 9 out of every ten good skins are not paid members would be my observation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,099 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

Thanks. I'm seeing that too with posters. They're not on this thread.

And key is what your sub will do, where it'll go and what's the overall plan, transparency.

That's your skin in the game here?

I got abused earlier on, im grand with.

Im not giving my card details out. I don't trust boards.ie with my account details.

I’ve been posting on Boards for 20 years on off, but the regular lurking forums for me are far less active and interesting as they used to be. It is also way more difficult to follow threads as a casual user; the whole format is tedious to use. It is just about grand for casual browsing but for a more zeitgeist capturing experience there needs to be a much more “alive” experience. The thank function is utterly pointless on boards. There is no organisation to replies and ways to easily follow the different sub-conversations in a thread. To name two major and fundamental issues.

I am not willing to donate or subscribe as a thanks for the past, but I would consider donating to a new Boards.ie project. Best of luck to whoever with whatever to do with it nonetheless!
