    TB has a decent YT review on one of these adapters but again not cheap;

What's the main benefit of this software flash in your own opinion?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,660 ✭✭✭zg3409

It's risky and may brick your hardware. If you read all the details it's not compatible with all hardware so may stop working hardware from working at all.

The main benefit is that dozens or hundreds of interested people can share their logs of working and failed sessions and that say half a dozen software volunteers and tweak the software to say work on Irish easygo, or Irish ESB ecars or Irish BP pulse. Often the chargers are already dodgy and don't work with all cars (BP pulse cannot charge an mg4 with CCS) and that the software versions on the chargers vary from UK to Ireland and that different batches of chargers may have different software, even ecars have multiple different brands and batches installed different time frames. Thus tweaks may be needed to get towards 99% compatibility.

It may also mean we move towards an adapter standard for hardware, with the software being open source and free, possibly means more competition with copies of existing models and say someone running a batch of 5000 units and selling them cheap. In theory it could be updated over the air with say a Bluetooth dongle and a phone app, meaning logs could be automatically shared, updates automatically applied, and improve the experience for all.

That said I avoided buying a leaf 8 years ago as even then Chademo was obsolete technology.

I don't have a leaf because of Chademo. But this is a cool project and I hope it gets better and cheaper.

8 years ago was 2017, if you wanted to go electric at that time it was pretty much leaf or Tesla

Even in 2020 when I bought my leaf it was one of few cars out there especially in the second hand market

Second hand ioniq 28kWh was the option I went for. That has CCS.

I was looking at that at the time, yes, if memory serves it was about 5-6k more expensive than the equivalent Leaf 40

it was more like 7-8 and couldn't justify. so i would have no issue in getting one of these adapters when/if my need arises.

bought in early 2020 myself, no regrets. my reliance on fast chargers is about 15 times a year. never an issue when planned and fully charged when setting off. i would always consider 2/3 options on long trips in case one becomes faulty or other unforeseen issue. There is a good selection of chademo out there, just west Mayo and Galway is bleak and probably kerry/Donegal can be added to that too.

The situation today is far better than it was even 2 years ago. Before you'd have to make the journey between Limerick and J14 on one charge, then the ESB installed proper charging at Portlaoise and Moneygall! One terrifying ordeal I had a few years ago on that road, the car was even showing 0%

I think even though most new chargers are CSS2 there's still new Chademo going in here and there. A lot less but still an improvement.

Nyland said as much in his video even there. He didn't need the CSS adapter on his 500k run.

The github page is also very good, If you are into that kind of thing

what is the best adapter choice on market now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,785 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Update from IEVA for a group discounted adapter

They will be going with a brand from EV-BOY. The discounted price will be €659 per unit for up to 49 members with further savings if more sign up. 2 year warranty. The unit is currently on sale on the EV-BOY site for GBP699.50 so it's a decent saving I think

likely to be interested on this myself. not in an urgent need, but nice to have for the few long trips i make. just like insurance.

discount isn't massive but the price is attractive rather that the 900+ euro versions that is out there. what is also attractive is a group in ireland having these on the charges on this island so issues and fixes could be shared easily.

Cut-off is the 5th of April for another expression of interest. No commitment to buy until after that date. The form is apparently on this page but I don't see it

    https://ev-boy.co.uk/ieva-members-faq/

Notably question 4 in the product FAQ leaves out some major operators which would be worrying

Tested and confirmed on major networks including Tesla Superchargers (CCS), Ionity, Gridserve, Osprey, BP Pulse, Shell Recharge, InstaVolt, and Octopus Electroverse — covering the vast majority of rapid chargers across the UK and Ireland.

to get the link to the form you need to have submitted expression of interest

    https://www.irishevassociation.ie/news/chademo-adapters-what-can-we-do

i've submitted mine, as you said there is no commitment to buy but i do hope to see enough for the 2nd tier pricing.

the product shows firmware can be updated, so any initial issues with infra in ireland can be worked on as a group. Advantage of a group buying a particular product, is that it makes it easier to get solutions and faster. I prefer this than forking out for a product only a few people have in this country and on my own in terms of resolving it.

    it is not without risk

Update from EV-BOY - Adapters Arriving

Hi everyone! Quick update for those who ordered the CHAdeMO to CCS2 Adapter through our group buy. Your units have arrived in Ireland and are heading out to you now.

We know this took longer than planned due to some air freight delays, so thanks for being patient with us. The good news is they arrive fully charged and ready to use straight away, no setup needed.

For those getting one, keep an eye on your mailbox and feel free to share how you get on with it once it arrives. Happy to answer any questions here or you can message me directly for support.

You can also find firmware updates on our website at ev-boy.co.uk if you need them down the road.

    Thanks again for the support.

    Conrad

That's brilliant news, I've seen CCS cars not working properly at some Applegreen sites

Our i3 with out of date firmware is one of those.

Funny, my LDV EV80 has no problem with Applegreen, but cant do comms at the Circle K own brand CCS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,785 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

You'd think the tech in them would be similar to what we have in other saic brands and I've not heard of similar issues with MG etc

tried this today, my early opinion is the person would need to have some skills and have the dongle as well as the leafspy pro app. tis a bit finicky. people should be informed that the dongle should come with adapter or encouraged to buy with the adapter, as if i didn't have it i'd be stuck or would need to reset the 12v.

    3 charge attempts today.

First, ESB station. first CCS plug tried 3 times and got insulation plug error. no charge.

Second, same station but tried the other plug, seemless experience as describe in instructions and it auto switched off at 88%

third, the new easygo siemans unit. seemless experience and it auto switched off at 88% BUT and a very big BUT….the car was upset, dash turned red with the infamous "Warning, service EV system, No Power". plugged in the dongle and cleared the error for the battery and the brake system.

Just for clarity did you set your charge limit to 88% or are you describing a bug?
