no id say factory weight will be around 22 or 22.5kg at that stage. At €8 kg ud be talking about €176-180

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,393 ✭✭✭Kevhog1988

They usually pay up to 23kg. between 185 amd 200 id say but none of us have a crystal ball on lamb prices

sometimes good run of the mill store lambs can sometimes still be hanging around in March unless intensively fed during December and January. That’s why I’m going for more scotch type this year , they will be there till March and April but still worth as much as Suffolk or revel hanging up and won’t be fed intensive

Would buy 35kg ewe lambs out of dowra and sell in mart around mid October to the dry ewe lamb men in Midlands, will do a serious thrive, nice sharp ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,316 ✭✭✭limo_100

That’s a good idea would you buy Suffolk ones? Get them for around 140 and get 20 of them. They would do a great job on the reseed and even make a small profit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭148multi

Ones with a brochie/speckled face and sharp head, will do a fierce thrive when put on good land.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,316 ✭✭✭limo_100

as long as they don’t have horns. I’m getting along the main roads sheep wire fenced and I don’t want them destroying it on me 🥴🤣

Do lads look at the body/carcass anymore when buying sheep?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 610 ✭✭✭StoutPost

Depends on the lad, had a chat with a sharp head/tight skin lad one time and I said cheviot were better than blackface. Nearly got the head tore off me. Then Teagasc did a trial with both and another type lamb, guess which came out ahead. That was with Wicklows, NCC are far better. Unless you're into breeding stock, the heads and skins go in the bin afaik.

TThe first bit out of the ewe is the head, a lamb with a big block of a head, deep chest and legs like tree trunks will cause bother all day long. You can have a good shaped body on a sharp head. What's the difference in price per kg of an e grade carcass compared to a o grade lamb carcass.

nice entry of quality short wolled stores at Ennis next Monday for any one interested

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭memorystick

70 lambs bought now will probably make more than 50 acres of spring barley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,960 ✭✭✭Bleating Lamb

If you don’t mind me asking had you to give much more compared to last year for them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭memorystick

I think you misinterpreted my point. Lambs bought now will make more than tillage. Feed barley at €180 per ton, Going to buy as soon as I can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭MIKEKC

What have you based your figures on .Thinking of buying some myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭memorystick

I was in with my neighbour tillage farmer and we were chatting. It’s not rocket science. Not much cost with lambs. Certainly no big cheques apart from buying them.

Serious money for culls yesterday even light unfleshed making good money

Ennis Mart Monday 4th August 2025Sheep Auction Good size sheep sale today with 562 on offer. Quite a number of store lambs today with numbers of heavy fleshed lambs small. A great trade for stores today. Average price of lambs up 20c/kg today but this was driven by the high price per kg for store lambs.

Cull ewes an excellent trade yet again and these averaged 2.56/kg and hit a high of €292.

    Lambs 11 @ 40.5kgs - €164 - €4.05/kg 18 @ 45kgs - €169 - €3.76/kg 8 @ 53kgs - €186 - €3.51/kg 9 @ 51kgs - €200 - €3.92/kg 6 @ 44kgs - €167 - €3.80/kg 9 @ 47kgs - €177 - €3.77/kg7 @ 51.5kgs - €210 - €4.08/kgS

    Stores 13 @ 32.5kgs - €147 - €4.52/kg 8 @ 35kgs - €135 - €3.86/kg 8 @ 32.5kgs - €152 - €4.68/kg10 @ 38kgs - €150 - €4.19/kg9 @ 31kgs - €149 - €3.92/kg15 @ 30kgs - €146 - €4.87/kg

I was trying to buy stores in ennis yesterday, well more that 100 with the weight, stores weren't far behind finished lambs in price, plan to go to kerry

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,112 ✭✭✭Dickie10

I would have thought Ennis would be a strange place to buy store lambs? Isn’t Clare in top 3 counties in Ireland with the least sheep? Bound to be scarce and thus expensive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,596 ✭✭✭✭wrangler

And they're down 20c in the Indo today, go figure

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,000 ✭✭✭White Clover

Desperate b*****ing going on with the factories.

I was watching Ennis for a bit yesterday too and prices were strong. 150 for 33kg.

Factory quotes should be up 20c/kg this week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,364 ✭✭✭orm0nd

Small numbers ok but there's a family from north west Clare that sell a large number of stores there for a few weeks each year. Top quality stock and very well presented.

Sheep also come from Galway Limerick Tipperary Kerry and Cork

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 606 ✭✭✭Young95

they could be gone back up 20c by end of week if farmers hold off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 Joesa

Ewes have a 50 cent increase. That's a massive jump

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭memorystick

Is there any value out there at all?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,000 ✭✭✭White Clover

Prices are strong alright. The lads buying over the last couple of weeks certainly have confidence in the trade.

I saw 23.6 selling for 120 and 20.5 selling for 110 today at Carnew.

Just watching the trade in Drumshanbo and sticking the prices into a store lamb calculator i was messing around with before. Not much value unless you have a big pile of grass to graze. Forward stores be leaving very little for a man putting them into a shed. Are many of you going finishing stores this year? A lot of money to tie up in stock for the return
