Went into the local PTSB bank on Friday to transfer £2750 to Intershoot in Northern Ireland by Swift. It's for a new Walther KK500 benchrest rifle. Intershoot never got the payment.

Phoned PTSB up today to be told they won't send the money because it's for a firearm. Cost me €35 in fees. I'll try to Revolut it the money today.

did you put into the reference box mention of the gun or name of it? It will auto flag it if it’s firearms related

Bizarre tbh, never heard of a bank refusing a transfer for firearms...

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

S.I. No. 187/1972 - Firearms (Temporary Custody) Order - Firearms seized

S.I. No. 21/2008 - Firearms (Restricted Firearms and Ammunition) Order 2008 - Firearm types restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009 - Firearms banned & grandfathered

S.I. No. 420/2019 - Magazine ban, ammo storage & transport restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023 - 2023 Firearm Ban (retroactive to 8 years prior)

    That's rediculous!

Mind you, I can't say that I'm surprised that it was the Permo, they haven't a clue about banking, outside of simple deposit taking and homeloans.

I'd lodge a formal complaint with the Permo (it can be done by phone, over their recorded lines, if you call them) and demand that all fees be returned. I'd also point out that it's a perfectly legal transaction and ask them to show you where this is not specifically permitted within their terms and conditions for the purpose of money transfers.

I'd also be looking at the options, when it comes to my future banking needs...

    Thanks,

    G.

It's because it's cross border or to an "outside" country.

They can and will do it but require documentation to prove the transaction is legal. This usually entails a firearms license on your behalf, showing the recipient is legit via dealer id, possible an import or copy of it from AGS.

It's all aimed towards stopping illegal money transfers, or laundering, for illegal or prohibited items which firearms fall into.

If that's PTSB's attitude I'd be looking for a new bank Clive, at the very least immediately look for a refund of fees as no actual service was provided in this instance when your were charged for a service.

On the flipside, I also bank with PTSB and have had no issues doing bank to bank with Cicognani in Italy (major firearms dealer), in fairness it wasn't for a firearm, just tuners and other stuff.

I and I'm sure others here would love to hear their reasoning for refusal of service, keep us updated.

I'll get the coffee next time around in HH Clive.

    @Cass

Sorry, but I don't really agree with you, on this one.

Sure, the Banks (correctly) have protocols in place, to prevent illegal transactions, but let's not forget - this is purely a transfer of funds, PTSB have no part in the commercial transaction, they don't ever handle the firearm etc.

So, the PTSB need to be satisfied that you've obtained the funds legally and that you are sending the funds to a reputable third party, for a legal purpose. That's it - they can ask reasonable questions, and then reject the payment, if not happy. It doesn't look like they did this, in Clive's example, they just returned the payment.

I'd even go half a step further, and ask you, woukd you seriously entrust the Permo (or any other Bank etc.) with a copy of your firearms licence? Let's not forget how often they lose your ID and need to request that it's provided again, so data I ask who might end up with a copy of your firearms licence, for example?

    Thanks,

    G.

@garrettod "Sorry, but I don't really agree with you, on this one."

I'm not giving you my opinion, I'm telling you what the bank's position is. I had it myself with them and the information is accessible through the bank or even a Google search.

So whether you agree with me or not is moot.

If you don't agree with the bank's position then that is a different matter and one best taken up with them.

That’s weird. How did they know?

Last time I bought from them, I bought a Glock and paid by Revolut. Then met Sam with the paperwork for collection along the border.

No service provided so no service charge should apply,

did you get your 35 lids back Clive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,207 ✭✭✭clivej

Yes I did get the service charge back as well.

Going to get sterling cash now for the rifle. I have the firearm licence and the import permit. So good to go now.

    Not surprised at all.
PTSB did a thing some years ago where you could customise your cards by sending in a picture of what you wanted on your card. However the specifically said any pictures of guns (their words) were not allowed.

Something must be up with our banks and firearms. Sent a bank transfer to Poland to buy a magazine 90 euros via AIB. Showed the transaction went thru, but not recived by the Polish bank.Contacted AIB as to why or whats wrong.AIB asks [already very unusual that a bank asks what you are buying] I tell them basically a firearm component that is legally available,[not that it any of their busisness].They call back and say they want to see my firearms certificate to let the transaction go thru!!!

I politely tell them that There are about 4 groups of people entitled to ask for a firearms cert in Ireland. An officer of An Garda Siochanna,Customs& Excise,a gun dealer, and a NPWS ranger. Anyone and everyone else can politely FO as that is classified personal data and protected information and quite frankly a "Nunya" request from a bank.

I am putting in a complaint on this as this is serious as to what and when our banks decide what and how we can purchase firearms or components.Their job is to move and make money, not aribirate on what their services are used to purchase.
