Truly is muppet season but if that were to happen would be a big upgrade

One of the best around, but likely to want savage wages.

Also didn't he run down his contract with AC Milan and now with PSG? Not the most loyal player, would likely do the same again.

Donnarumma is one of those players that's very highly rated by casuals (furthered by some of his shot stopping performances in the CL knockouts) but there's a lot of scepticism around him by football data people. It's not universal that he's a best in class GK by any means.

Not a hope in hell would I let Garnacho back in the squad now. I'd have Rashford back before him.

They'll all 100% leave in my opinion, if we can't sell them we'll loan them out at the death.

Shaw's interview was telling, he says there are no more stragglers, nobody who isn't 100% committed, and the atmosphere now is the best he's felt it in all his years at the club whereas it was toxic last year.

Shifting those 3 amigos (Rashford, Sancho & Garnacho) is absolutely vital.

    As for Sesko, who knows.

I'd be more in favour of bringing in Watkins, safer bet with PL experience.

But if Villa are going to insist on £60m for a near 30 year old player, whereas Sesko is 22 and probably only £15m more, it may be that between the number crunchers and the boss, Sesko makes more sense.

Plus Ruben has said a few times (and it has been the case with Cunha, Mbeumo and Leon) that he wants players who really want to come to United. If Sesko is openly saying he wants us over a CL club in Newcastle then that may be a factor.

Raiola client. Always going to be complications like that. Demanded too much at AC Milan so left on a free. Possibly will be the case at PSG too, if they don’t sell him this summer.

Even though there are doubts about some elements of Donnarumma's game, I'd still take him if the financial package wasn't outrageous. He has an aura, stature and presence that we're badly lacking at the club.

I do very much worry about this potential Sesko transfer and feel this is like Højlund all over again

Get a very unproven youngster and hope he'll spear head our attack.

Like deja vu all over again

Spending so much money on such an unproven player is a big gamble but I havent seen enough of the Bundesliga to comment he he worth the cost but I did see him during the recent Euros and he left a lot to be desired but he wasn't in a great team to be fair

Then on the other side we have Watkins who I'm not the biggest fan of and his age means there's never going to be a re-sell on fee

There's really not a great choice of strikers out there that utd could feasible get

Who cares if he runs down his contract?! You get a World Class GK for 3-4 years and somehow this is a bad thing?

If we were to sign Sesko ahead of Newcastle then that means they are highly unlikely to sell Isak which would scupper Liverpools plan to sign him. Im all for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,070 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

Sesko would be a massive gamble and as mentioned we risk making the same mistakes as before. To be United's main striker you need a strong mentality. We have seen players buckle under the pressure of playing for United. Also he doesn't have a prolific scoring rate in the Bundesliga.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 382 ✭✭Seattle

I don't think we'd need Sesko to be that prolific from the start. If he got only 10 PL goals, it'd be ok as long as his link up play was good and he brings the best out of Cunha, Mbuemo, Bruno etc. That alone would make him an enormous improvement over Hojlund.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,843 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I don't think the club should be worried about resale value when trying to buy a proven PL goal scorer. If the fee and wages are reasonable pull the trigger.

Though unlike when we bought Hojlund at least Sesko is a couple of years older. He won't be relying on a teenager like Garnacho, a one legged player in Antony, or a half assed Rashford to give him support.

Though I'd still much prefer Watkins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,201 ✭✭✭Jofspring

Sesko is different to Hojlund though. He has been one of the top CF prospects in Europe for the last 4 years. Has been playing international football for that time and has a euros under his belt.

United have been tracking him for years. Weren't we looking at buying him before he went from Salzburg to Leipzig? The Hojlund deal seemed to kind of come out of nowhere. They saw a scandanvian player banging in a hat trick for Denmark and said oh we'll have a bit of that. This seems like a more thought out move and Vivell would surely know a lot about him.

If Watkins is for £40m spread out over a few years then that's the one to go for.

If Sesko is £60/65m and Watkins is looking like £50m/60m then I think Sesko is a far better buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,350 ✭✭✭FrankN1

If we went for Watkins, there's no way Villa would sell him for 40m. They would easily want 60-65. Probably the same price as Sesko.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,308 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

He was 9th top goalscorer last season in the Bundesliga with 13 which isn't bad for a 21 year old in a team who finished 7th. Alan Shearer scored the same amount of league goals in the season when he was 21. That doesn't mean that Sesko will go on to have the same success as him but what are we really expecting from someone of that age?

There are question marks of course - it is a risk given the price and potentially needing to sign someone else if he doesn't work out (which would be a major headache) but there are reasons to be positive about him too. Vivell is pushing for him and he has worked with him before, so he must see something that justifies the gamble. Wilcox is on board. He is supposed to be great in the air, something we would really benefit from.

I don't blame people for making the Hojlund comparisons but it feels different. Højlund has 14 league goals in the last 2 seasons wheres Sesko had 14 in his first year in the Bundesliga. John Murtough was DOF with Richard Arnold above him when they signed Hojlund, they're not people that anyone would trust with that kind of investment anymore, I would expect. Hojlund feels like a big mistake at the moment anyway but it doesn't mean we should be afraid of signing young prospects ever again. Yoro is looking like he will be excellent. I would prefer if there was some 26/27/28 year old PL proven striker available for the striker position but if they go for Sesko I'll welcome it and hope for the best.

i know next to nothing about sesko - his stats below make for worrying reading though.

    Fun Sesko fact...

He has scored 3 goals in 4 games vs Bayern and 2 goals, 1 assist in 4 vs Dortmund.

So handles the big stage well if nothing else.

Definitely no idea at who this one is aimed at:

The levels in training, keeping the times of when we’re doing this and doing that, making sure no one’s coming late or anything, I think we need to just all up the level of demands.

    Ornstein:

RB Leipzig asking price for Benjamin Sesko ~€75m guaranteed + add-ons & percentage of future sale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,070 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

If we do sign him, it would be fantastic if it works out. Just looking at YouTube footage and he drops very deep. I would prefer a fox in the box type of striker aka Cole type player who would get on the end of what Cunha, Bruno, Amad and Mbeumo create but unfortunately there is nobody really available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,843 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

All in probably £75M which is roughly €87M.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,943 ✭✭✭NITRO95

The asking price being openly leaked tells me discussions are fairly advanced. This one might move fairly quickly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,526 ✭✭✭fergiesfolly

"percentage of future sale"???? After paying 75 million + add ons for him? WTAF!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,843 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Sell on clause shouldn't matter that much but at that price should be a profit of sales and not percent. So if he flops you're not giving them more money when trying to recoup some cash.

If he fulfills his potential it's not like United will be looking to sell him anyway. They'll want him to remain as their first choice number 9 until he's not good enough to be leading the line as first choice. And fingers crossed that's in 10+ years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 924 ✭✭✭jayo44

It's united.... He will either be fantastic and retire with us or leave for small fee or be crap and leave for free. Not worried about sell on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,114 ✭✭✭mobydopy

Don’t know about it getting done quickly but I don’t think United enter these talks with Sesko and Leipzig this publicly if they feel they can’t make it happen.

75m is definitely steep but he’s the best of what is left on the striker market and I think it’s a risk worth taking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,381 ✭✭✭✭JRant

It's around £64M so would be inline with the Mbeumo and Cunha fees.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

I'd say Watkins record in the PL puts him ahead of Sesko in any list that includes the best of what is left in the striker market.
