By the sounds of things, you really don't but you seem intent on baiting me on something so I'll bow out.

I'd be more confident that the incident wouldn't have been even looked at if Tizzano hadn't put on a diving performance that would make most soccer players blush.

Wouldn't be surprised his actions played in the minds of the ref team.

Probably good for the game that the overexaggerating didn't get rewarded.

Anyone there? Heard its pretty out of focus there. Maybe just bigger here...

Farrell isn't one for wholesale changes, but he can be one for sentimentality; and he'll know what a Lions cap will mean to those players.

Given the unique nature of the Lions, and the fact that the series is won, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a decent chunk of those players come in next week.

There would usually be changes for the 3rd test, whether the series is won or not. The only time in recent memory where the same 23 was kept was in 2017 with the series still alive. But even in 2013 there were a few changes made to the starting team. You expect a few changes as those were bumps and bruises will be given time off as it has been a long season and those on the sidelines the last 2 weekends will be itching to show it was wrong to keep them off the field.

I would like to see Pollock start, think it would be fun to see him in the team if they are a little more carefree with the series won. You would not go wrong with a backline of Kinghorn, Hansen, Ringrose, Tuipulotu, Lowe, F Smith and Mitchell. That would be just as exciting and not a drop in much quality compared to the last test.

In the forwards it could be interesting in that you would change tactics a little to see, Genge, Sheehan, Stuart, Itoje, Ryan, Chessum, VDF and Pollock. A little more mobility in the game plan and I think that would be fun to see, but not sure if they will go for those many changes. We will have to see who is fit and who isn't.

Thought that was a super game of rugby, the first half in particular stands up to anything you could hope to watch as a fan.

Obviously delighted the Lions won but can't deny a small part of me wanted to go into next week with it all on the line.

Thought the non-penalty at the death was definitely contentious, personally I thought it was foul play and a penalty but you think back to the 2021 tour the Lions got a mad call at the end to save the drawn tour. It's how it goes.

Referees will tell you that almost any option is available to them at every ruck.

    eg: in this instance

Morgan penalised for illegal contact to Tizzano

    Morgan penalised for 'sealing off'

Tizzano penalised (free kick sanction) as his head is lower than his hips in the ruck

If every Ref pinged every offence every game would have 60 penalties or free kicks.

I don't disagree, there are probably 5 things you could ping at every ruck, but foul play tends to take precedence over technical offences.

Has head lower than hips for a jackler been called as a FK.....ever?

This wasn't a ref making a conscious decision to ignore something at a ruck. It was a group of officials reviewing it and ignoring the dangerous entry to the ruck.

Even, if the ref wanted to penalise Tizzano for illegal entry, dangerous play takes precedent over foul play.

They didn't "ignore" the dangerous entry to the ruck, they adjudged that there was no dangerous entry to the ruck. Which I would agree with.

    No dangerous play.grand clean out.

Aus player should get an Oscar.

Piardi clearly said they didn’t see any foul play.

What’s also relevant is how quickly they agreed that it wasn’t a penalty. There wasn’t a drawn out discussion and repeated rewatches. Whatever you think about Piardi, he had the full backing of Amashukeli and BOK.

I didn't watch the game but was told there was no arms. Was that the case?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,202 ✭✭✭✭phog

We can agree to differ but I can assure you, if that was against an Irish player in the 6Ns we'd all be complaining about the dangerous entry to the ruck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,897 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

And if an Irish guy had made the clear out, we’d be saying it was fine, no foul play.

We all have our biases when it comes to teams we support.

This is why the refs are neutral.

Will you stop. Grand clean out.

If anyone is cited its the Australian player bringing the game into disrepute. No head contact

Captain Hindsight here, but it's funny reading the thread after the fact.

Anyway, yesterday was a belter of a match. Best test match since Quarter Final weekend at the last World Cup.

Brilliant cameo from Ryan. Keenan and Sheehan were immense. JGP as intelligent as ever. For the non Irish Genge and Kinghorn were massive off the bench.

Team selection will be interesting next week, I'd be tempted to freshen it up a bit and bring in a few really hungry Lions to finish off the Wallabies.

Ryan, Pollock, Van Der Flier and Kinghorn to name a few options.

Agreed - I thought it was a cracking game of rugby, with a real bite and intensity between the two teams.

The Wallabies have plenty of quality rugby players, but they've struggled at half back for a long time IMO. It's a shame for them that Schmidt is moving on, because I think he could continue to improve them quite a bit.

On the final ruck - I feel like across both tests (and most of the tour tbh) the rucks have been an utter mess, with a very lenient approach taken by referees to entries, players not rolling away, teams playing the 9 and just general messiness. That's fine, and I feel it benefitted the Aussies over the two tests, but you can't then turn around and expect the very last ruck of the test match to be refereed differently.

Couple of other items for me that are conspicuously absent from the Aussies whinging about the refereeing performance is how frequently Rob Valetini leads with his elbow or forearm when carrying into contact, and doesn't get called for it. Will Skelton remains a cheap shot merchant - the late hit into Furlong's back in the first half that sparked a scrap was filthy, and, as others have pointed out here, Jake Gordon doesn't score his try if Andrea Piardi doesn't run a perfect blocking line for him making the hole for him to run through.

It's all well and good talking about the very final incident, but the game is decided over 80 mins and the Aussies got the benefit of plenty of decisions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,202 ✭✭✭✭phog

You've previously said the decision could easily have gone the other way. If that is true then there is as argument that the ref got it wrong too.

Neutral refs don't always get it right all the time either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,946 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

So you're saying a fan's opinion is of equal weight to a ref's?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,200 ✭✭✭StevenToast

I predict Farrell will start an entire new back row of VdF, Pollock and Morgan....

I do think he has comfort to change a good few without a huge dip in quality....

    That's some leap there.

But I'm sure we've all seen a player being cited after a ref decided it only merited a YC and as fans we've called it a red card offence at the time. Were we incorrect at the time or was the ref incorrect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,202 ✭✭✭✭phog

I can't see him changing the entire backrow but I'd love to see JvdF start next weekend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,946 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

It's a leap to suggest that because a fan says a decision could go either way the ref would have the same opinion.

As for your second hypothesis, for every fan that says it's a red card, there'd be an equally myopic fan saying the opposite. Tinted glasses and all that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,897 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

I think he did get it right - but then I wanted the Lions to win so I can’t claim to be looking at it objectively. Like your analogy to Ireland fans in the 6N.

But likewise the Aussies screaming it was wrong aren’t exactly neutral either.

The decision could have gone the other way, yes. There is an argument he got it wrong, I just don’t agree with it.

Nobody said neutral refs get it right all the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,202 ✭✭✭✭phog

I, like you, wanted The Lions to win but unlike you, I think the officials got it wrong so bias doesn't come in to it for me.

No, because it's not a law. This only applies to a ruck, not a jackalling situation.
