New double field entry gates

can I ask why didn’t you add a centre post with a sleeve so the post can be removed. That’s the way I tend to do them. Find it works normally only gate gate gets used but lift it for silage and so on.

Don't know where i saw a picture but someone had a homemade latch like above but had used a ball hitch on one gate and corresponding trailer hitch on other gate. Thought it very clever

Probably both worn beyond safe use maybe, trailer hitch was old type with no brake setup

I'll have my speak for any future double gate developments. Or single even.

If putting beside a car road hang the gates on the field side of the post so that they can't swing open out onto the roadside. Have it that it swings against the post when closing.

The scenario of a car hitting the swinging gate is gone off the table then.

Can also set the post tilted so the gate naturally falls inwards

Would many on here hang their gates like IFarmWeFarm whereby they can be lifted off without releasing the hangers? He seems to have set them up with the upper hanger high mounted enough to allow the gate be slide up and release the foot of the gate out of the bottom hanger. Never seen them done that way before.

was thinking today you could put down a removable post in front of them 2gates and weld on a few ferrels or even just a flat piece of steel leaving a gap between the post and the steel and just latch your 2gates into that piece

I've mostly used 8x4, but 7x3.5 would be fine IMO.

Would be more important to get a good portion of it into the ground and concreted around. You'll have bother bending a 7x3/5, but if its not down in the ground well enough then it might start to lean.

For field gates I'd always try to have the latch bearing weight at the point of the gate. It means there is less stress on the hanging end and ones climbing over them won't cause it to sag. Yes, you have to give it a wee lift at the point to take the weight off it to latch/unlatch, but if you're unable to do that you shouldn't be in the field. Keeps the gate level too.

The ones with the round latching bar are a godsend - so much simpler to do and it is centered too - unlike the flat bar latch.
