Cork remind me very much of Galway throughout the 90's and up until we won in 2017, always there or there abouts, having great performances, but, flopping in AI finals, afraid to win and feeling the weight of bridging a long gap, got worse as each year passed and as another final was bottled. Had we played anyone other than Waterford, we probably would have lost in 2017 too.

Hard to see where this Cork team goes from here that's a massive physiological blow, wouldn't be surprised if Cork fail to get out of Munster next year. The pressure on them will get worse until an AI is won. Think Cork would need to play a team like Waterford or Galway in an AI final, teams they don't fear, but, none of those teams are likely to reach finals in the near future. The likes of Tipp, Clare & Limerick have inflicted huge physiological damage on Cork in recent AI finals.

I said on the EchoLive Facebook page a few days ago that I couldn't see why Tipp were being written off when they had a few players on the team who had won All-Ireland's and Cork had none. I was laughed at and called a clown.

    I rewatched the second half.

Horgan misses an easy point that would put Cork 7 points up.

Tipp chip away at the lead.

2 Cork shots hit the post. Barrett misses 2 decent chances.

Then Collins bats down a ball and Tipp get a goal, which gives them the momentum.

@46 minutes Tipp are 1 point ahead.

Harnedy misses an easy chance. Niall O Leary makes a bad mistake gifting Tipp a point. Hayes has a poor wide.

@53 minutes Tipp get a penalty and Downey is sent off, heads begin to drop.

Connolly has another bad miss and Cahalane gives away a daft free for a charge.

Cork are lacking intensity, cohesion and look tired.

@59 minutes Tipp have scored 2-9 but Cork have only managed a solitary point.

Tipp then score a third goal and thats the end of the match.

Tipp were solid, and worked hard but they had alot of wides, by no means were they playing brilliantly.

Cork were just awful in that second half, so many wild shots, poor misses, poor passes and gifted Tipp a goal and 2 points due to errors.

Systemically Cork hurling is in a bad place and has been for some time now.

No All Ireland club win since Newtown in 2003. That team was the back bone of the county all ireland winning teams of 04 and 05. Last time before that was Midleton in 1988 which also coincided with 2 All Ireland wins in the following years.

We had no Munster club win until last year since 09 when more or less that same Newtown team won it. Glanmire won Munster last year but flopped against Na Fianna in the all ireland final. And interestingly Glanmire had no player in the match day squad today.

The club game in the county is in a dire state when compared to the other main counties.

The minors had a drought from 2001 to 2017. The 2001 team contributed several players to the 04 & 05 group. Same for the 1995 and 1998 minor winning teams.

Our structures are in a poor state and somehow we expect to be winning senior all irelands and yet we are making no inroads in any club or underage competitions. The house is built on shaky foundations that way.

The same applies in football, it's a carbon copy story only even worse.

Tipp had Cork in a tactical bind the whole game. The sweeper dominated and gave the inside forwards nothing. While 6 points up at HT sounds rosy - Connolly, Hayes and Hoggie only had 1 point each from play in the first half and in the whole game as it turned out.

They dominated tactically from start to finish and turned the screw even more in the 2nd half. We had no answers on and off the pitch and just collapsed.

I’m no hurling expert but our puck outs have been poor all year. Tipp won a lot more of their own puck outs than we did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,578 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

That's because we kept dropping them into the sweeper. Collins is also poor at puckouts anyway and routinely gives them straight to the opposition.

That first goal for Tipp was such a shambles. The players just completely caved in after that. Look we'll all be back to go through it all again next year, but it goes to show that irrespective of history and what you won in the past, going two decades without an all Ireland and turning around a losing culture can be a very difficult thing to do once it takes a hold on a team and county.

That was the worst collapse in an all Ireland final since Limerick against Offaly in 1994. This is going to leave serious mental scars on Cork hurling i fear going forwards.

To be fair...Dalton should have been taken off after 20 minutes....he was more interested in having aggro with his Tipp marker...at one stage the ball was played out to him and he had his back turned to the ball...Pat Ryan was screaming at him yo get into the game....

Tipp sweeper was cleaning up...wasn't hard for him to be fair..he read nearly all of Corks passes

Alan Connolly was totally distracted by the low level niggle from his marker. They were down near me in the 1st half and Tipp fella kept pulling Connolly's hurley, his jersey etc and just general shithousery. Connolly couldn't handle it. They got into his head.

the sweeper definitely threw Cork… surprised they hadnt a plan to work around it… they did did it a few times as 1st half went on and i thought by the end of the 1st half they had made sweeper redundant…

robbie doyle , doyle had a fine game scored the same as the man he was marking and had the same amount of wides ,

In regards to the Alan Connolly incident we are a very innocent and naive bunch at times. Cork hurlers just aren't cynical or ruthless enough imo. This has been going on since post the 2006 all Ireland final at this stage.

We can win league titles, Munster titles but can't get over the line in all Ireland finals. Other counties see us as being a soft and mentally brittle bunch who can't handle it when the going gets tough which is correct sadly. This has been one of the darkest and most damaging afternoons in our history as a hurling county.

yeah.. have to say i feel a little sorry for Cork this evening…. they were set up for the fall... raging favs.. ive seen it before in hurling in 1999 and 2010 and the Kerry footballers have been caught a few times in finals when they were favs… Tipp were in a great position going into todays game… just unfortunate for Cork… can see 4/5 retirements from that Cork setup and possibly a change of manager…

has shane kingstons form taken a nosedive that the management left it so late to bring him on…?

i keep saying the same thing to cork supporters that thing cork have fallen behind , cork set the bar , in the 90s particularly because they reached the all ireland football and hurling finals on the same year twice and dominated both codes under age

what happened next was several counties raised their game , got investors involved even at club level let alone intercounty level and now its a case of several counties being on an even keel , its a lottery trying to pick an all ireland winner now at the start of the year because 6 or 7 counties coached the same , financially backed the same , have the same level of players , same level of under age structures

that was not the same prior to the late 90s ore early 2000s , the chasing pack have probably caught up ,

cork do need invest in better coaching in defenders at under age going forward , looking at the young team at 17s this year fine team from 5 upwards but the full back line not as good , nearly the same as the senior side

In my opinion that was far worse than the 5 minute final for Limerick in 94. If I recall correctly Limerick were sucker punched by a late goals and hadn’t time to come back.

Today we had a whole half of hurling in which we didn’t compete at all. Its easy to hurl on the couch and I don’t want to name names or kick lads while they’re down but it was as though they thought the game was over at half time because of their goal.

The warning signs of what Tipp were capable of were there for all to see. Their shooting was poor in the first half . It should have been obvious that they’d have been going for a strong start to the second half to atone for the first half mistakes but Cork couldn’t cope and lacked the on field leadership to pull themselves out of the fire.

You only deserve it if you score more in the final than your opponents. Everything else is just waffle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,649 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

so picking a team up off the ground and winning their first national title in 20 years and a munster title is nothing but waffle ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,247 ✭✭✭Iscreamkone

You don’t deserve an AI for being likeable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,649 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

you dont fair enough , but for what he has done with this cork team he dose deserve it , i blame the hype train for putting so much pressure on the players , pressure got to alan connolly , hoggie and hayes today all great players but its almost impossible to shake off that type of hype , espically an amature team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 captain hadley

How has patrick Collins been our goalie for so many years clearly not up to it.As for management if pat does leave it must be ben o connor but is he a bit too awkward for the board same in football should be john fintan daly but are the afraid of fellows who don't tow the line.

Everyone writing off Tipp even all the so called pundits

But Tipp beat the all Ireland champions in Ennis

Drew with Limerick in Limerick one of the best teams of the last few years

Beat Kilkenny in Croker Park of course they had a chance and they took it

Cork were lured into compliancy and payed the price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,286 ✭✭✭lukin

Cork supporters put too much value on the underage All-Ireland's we won in the last few years. Winning All-Ireland's at U-20 and minor level means very little at senior level.

Limerick won 3 U-21 All-Ireland's in a row in the early noughties. None of the players on those teams went on to win a senior All-Ireland.

Nobody will give you an AI. You have to take it. This cork team may get there yet- I hope so. When they win it I hope it’s with Pat Ryan in charge.
