Most of the time they want what's easier to install new engine but I did see fully built heads on ebay for 50 quid and 17 shipping so if there's no bottom end damage then I see no reason not to get one of these heads and get her going again. That would certainly be the cheapest way out, I sent him the ebay links to the heads , still waiting for reply.

Against better judgment, I'll reply this once.

This is the type of nonsense that has damaged the site. Reactive comments that completely miss the point, dismisses a person's rationale, experience or perspective, and reduces it to nonsense like "teenage angst".

No effort of critical thinking or emotional intelligence. No better than a soggy piece of bread.

No real purpose, except to say, "You are wrong, and I am right." Thats not a discussion forum, and Yes, it was clearly better in the past, and that should not be dismissed as something that is irrelevant...its probably quite central to where we are today...at least to those with critical thinking skills.

I say your reasoning to support the site is valid, and I would not dismiss it with a lazy buzzword. Throw money at it if you believe it will stat around.

Taking everything into context, and based on his actions since taking over, I believe we are funding Odhran's "way out", not a credible future for the site. And I'm more than happy to be wrong in that assumption. I want to believe otherwise, but the indicators are not there to support it.

Accept my rationale or not, it doesn't matter after I post this comment.

it’s less than €5 per month per person. If I saw five €1 coins on the road I wouldn’t stoop to pick them up.

I easily get €5 of entertainment out of boards per month. Easily… so, when I see others saying I’m not paying €5 a month because … insert reason seemingly too onerous to warrant €5 per month… and I think that person is most likely not wanting to pay the princely sum and then coming up with a reason to justify it.

But, good to know you’ll be able to put an extra €50 a year to your fancy pants budget. I’ll always have that happy memory of you to keep 👋

Not sure how decrying someone else's post as no better than a soggy piece of bread is supposed to demonstrate emotional intelligence or critical thinking. Your own theory is no more than unevidenced supposition, same as most other guesses as to what's going on here, my own included.

I say your reasoning to support the site is valid, and I would not dismiss it with a lazy buzzword.

Referring to someone else post as you have above is precisely dismissing it that fashion.

I can give it a couple weeks / a month to see what comes back. Its already stated this thread is being monitored.

Hope the t-shirts, hoodies + pint glass merch is being considered.

That's such a Celtic Tiger comment… Folks, we're saved, there's no more recession or economic crisis, the prices and the inflation are no problem, we don't need to stoop to pick up a fiver. Reminds me of some of my very foolish, short-sighted colleagues at the turn of the century that used to throw loose change in the bin because they hated being weighed down by it - sticking it in a poor box or into some charity shop where it could have been of some benefit to someone else must've been below them.

Bully for you if you can afford it. Many others, myself included, for a variety of reasons, can't. For others, Boards may be one of the very few social outlets they have.

I have paid for a year subscription just now.

Do I care if the site is not around in 6 months time?, of course - but not at all about the money.

In a way i have paid for the past in the hope for a future.

I am hoping the site can survive and that whatever version of it is next somehow goes back in boards.ie time and as a result forwards in functionality (maybe this isn't possible).

Given the reduction in site traffic is the stated reason why the owners need more revenues, I wonder what impact the ‘viral’ impact of the original post has had. There has been an article on the Irish Indo, and apparently many posts/threads on reddit and other social media. That will surely have resulted in a good bump in visitors.

I also am hitting more of the ads on the site to make up for those missing googlers. Most of them accidentally i admit, but still all the clicks count!

I think if you look hard enough you’ll see nobody is being forced to pay. You’ll note many coming on here saying they are not supporting because of x. Very few if any of such posts were because they can’t afford it.

To be clear, I have never thrown away money. And I have not been found wanting giving to charities either. So, whatever stereotypes you have in your mind about me they are wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,134 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

If this is being monitored add an option to pay with PayPal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,134 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

You're in here complaining about this meanwhile you were taking advantage of anecdotes being back in the immigration thread and trolling the **** out of it. Multiple posters thankfully didn't take the bait and put you on ignore.

There's a small but persistent cohort who want that thread shut down because they disagree with opposition to immigration and I'm guessing you're one of them. That thread will greatly benefit from a hands off approach where posters make it their mission to get one side banned and the thread shut down @suvigirl comes to mind.

Folks, I've updated the original post to add a few more points.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 79,089 Mod ✭✭✭✭New Home

For starters, I wasn't the one who said "I wouldn't stoop to pick up €5 in coins" (yes, I'm paraphrasing). Secondly, although most of those who clearly stated they wouldn't subscribe said they wouldn't do it because they ultimately didn't trust the site or needed more info, it doesn't follow that those (perhaps plenty more, for all we now) who can't afford it would post it on thread, just like the vast majority of those who did subscribe didn't actually give an explanation as to why they did it.

By reading lots of the posts in these threads you're given the impression that if you don't subscribe it's because you either don't want to save Boards or are too cheap to fork out for it, when in actual fact there maybe plenty of other reasons even though people might not be very vocal about it.

Aye.. I'm up for saving Boards, but I'm going to wait and see what the threadbare version is going to be like. And if it starts to look like there's any point in subscribing - at the moment I'm not too convinced there's any kind of plan in place other than "you can subscribe if you like".

“For starters, I wasn't the one who said "I wouldn't stoop to pick up €5 in coins" (yes, I'm paraphrasing).”

Thanks for stating the obvious. This sentence means far more to you than me. I can’t help that.

And one 100% on the ‘don’t want to save boards’, that’s the impression I get from people with literally thousands of posts.

"I dont want to save boards" and I dont believe it can be saved under the current ownership/management/platform are two different things.

While you would not stoop to pick up €5 - many more of us think carefully about where our money goes.

I agree with asking for the Paypal option. One reason it took me several days to pay was because I don't give my debit card number randomly online, I don't have revolute and I have never heard of the third option. It took me a while to think of/decide to use my credit card - I rarely use it and it just didn't occur to me - I would have preferred to use Paypal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 840 ✭✭✭Dublin Calling

Agreed, a PayPal one off Donation option should have been made avail. It should have been added to the site years ago! Many people don't seem to realise that that current system is an automated Subscription. Some have said they paid for a Month and will pay next month if the changes are improvements etc. Next month's subscription will automatically be debited from the card. Unlike a Bank Account Direct Debit, it is very hard to stop an automated debit from a Credit/Debit card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Avatar in the Post

I understand money is relative, but for many people €5 a month is nothing special. Nobody is being forced to pay. If someone on the street asks you for money do you ask them what are they going to do with it? It’s similar money here… Anyone that uses boards.ie tell me you don’t currently get €5 worth from it each month… everything else is irrelevant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

My counter point to this is that yes I may get multiples of €5 worth of value from boards. But nothing has been shown that tells me that paying €5 or any amount will go towards boards or improving it or keeping it running longer.

The current owner didn't create boards, didn't build the community that boards became, didn't build the memories that people have. Now he might very well improve it, keep it running and so on. If so, great! But he needs to demonstrate that somehow.

He said somewhere before I think that he didn't want to be an absentee landlord. He answered maybe 5 questions on this thread and hasn't shown up since. Tell me how that's not being absent?

I put an annual payment through last Saturday but can't find any evidence of it having gone through on my Boards account as of yet.
