@Mad_Lad Thankfully this is not 'Xitter' where you supposedly have free speech! (and limited)

Some topics/discussions/contrary viewpoints are off limits to protect boards from liability and been sued etc.

Just because you have a contradictory viewpoint does not give you automatic rights to share it.

Even on 'Xitter', things get censored, and/or long community notes attached (if that is still active).

So, having a different opinion on boards is now classed as spamming .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,321 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

As is the case with the vast majority of people who fall foul of mods and general userbase, it's not necessarily the opinion, but rather the manner in which it's expressed.

Plenty of people can have an opposing opinion, but engage in good faith discussion with at least some smidgen of room to see the other persons side. But some can't, and instead grow a persecution complex and a massive chip on their shoulders when their more dickish antagonistic posting style is pushed back upon.

No. But when 6 out of 30 posts on a page are yours, that would be…

At this stage even I can see there are loads of posts that really aren't relevant and add little if nothing to the discussion that the thread title would indicate.

I'm against deleting posts in most cases but surely these posts can just be moved to another thread one with a title like "Less important news".

Wake me up when it's all over.

I raised the same point last friday, that is why I bookmarked boards.ie profiles comments link and add them to my signature. Sorry if i contributed to off topic chatter on the thread.

Edit: - Just edited stuff out of signature was looking to big on mobile.

Poster is getting his kicks from others responding .

The usual advice of not feeding the troll is as true here as regards replying to those posting incessantly about how they think the site is gone down the tubes and not worth supporting because moderation , government , etc ad nauseum. One or two posts to make a point is fair enough after that it's just trolling .

    Let them off .

If people like posting here they will most likely pay something to help the site even if they have some reticence because of Vanilla bugs or past bad experiences.

If they don't want to and are not making a valid point , that's their decision and they might come round at a later stage if the site shows signs of sticking around . Who cares really ?

I won't be wasting my time trying to persuade some of those shxxeposters to pay or stay ..good riddance !

Posters like that are just trying to stir people up who are invested and are best ignored and moved swiftly past .

This is a thread to garner support or genuinely discuss how the site can survive , not give attention to eejits who have nothing positive or interesting to contribute .

Help keep Boards going , subscribe or donate if you can.

doesn't have the amount of traffic it used to have 20 years ago

I don't know how big it was 20 years ago, it was growing back then, but it felt small enough still.. I wonder how the numbers compare, then and now

Alas, there always seems to be someone that feeds the trolls. The responses are at least well meaning in nature, if ultimately also derailing.

Boards was a lot busier back then but the internet was quite different too. The cesspit of social media (e.g. FB, X, etc.) hadn't really achieved the dominance that it holds now which was a good thing. Boards.ie was, I think, the busiest Irish based website back then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,759 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

In the past you could see everyone coming into work and logging on their work PC as the user numbers increased on a Monday morning. Now I think the majority of users access boards.ie from mobile phone and that is a completely different experience which I think changed usage here.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Not sure, like many of a slightly older generation, I tend to use the PC in preference to the phone for most stuff.

Not sure what the point of this thread is anymore to be honest.

Or most of the feedback threads to be honest.

Its clear that the powers that be have no interest in reading peoples feedback or taking any of the suggestions on board.

If the site is on the point of going belly up due to running out of money, the owners could well have bigger problems to deal with than the minutiae on this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭archfi

I use desktop/laptop mainly but I remember when Vanilla was first foisted on us and all the bugs/feckups began straightaway that one of Odhran or Niamh said the vast majority of access to the site was via mobile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,067 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

Are we sure it is in danger of going belly up?

Because you wouldn't know it if you are logged in on desktop. There is literally nothing there highlighting this imminent danger. I had to go searching to try and find this thread.

I heard the news on Reddit and seen this thread when it was first created, so knew about the situation, and was curious if any more news had been released.

Since there is absolutely zip, zero, nothing pinned or highlighted when I log in on desktop I had to go searching instead.

I agree, it's like the two sites (desktop and mobile) are completely different entities, you have to go rooting through the categories to find this thread or the subscription one on desktop. It is pinned at the top of the main page on the mobile site but why it's not on desktop is strange

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,765 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

Its pretty obvious though who are well meaning . Nobody minds people asking questions . I have been asking questions myself but people purely logging on or rereging to slate the site or mods are just shxxwhawking and should be ignored or recognized as such . Waste of time engaging .

So many excellent posters here posting on all sides of the debates in support of the site . Well done all ! 👋👋👋

I hope we get enough to save this site . I really appreciate all the intelligent input even if I don't agree . 🥰

I use the mobile site so I saw this thread. Someone logging in via desktop however wouldn't see it at all unless they went looking for it. What a shambles. I was on the fence about subscribing but it's fairly clear by the cackhanded cash grab approach by the Boards folk and lack of follow up comms that they either don't care or don't know how to save this forum. They've asked for €100k and I can't see a single clarification whether this is a one-off or annual requirement. I'd love to see boards survive or at the least, archived, but with these clowns in tow I only expect gullible people to part with their money and be disappointed. Ps it's the mods that ruined this place, not vanilla, and certainly not Google.

I would honestly have subscribed but I just don't feel things would change filor the better.

I only access it on a.phone so no experience of what's its like on desktop but if it's not only different there but not calling attention to the issues then what are the people in charge doing?

Are they really at the top if their game? I think not.

    To go with Vanilla...big mistake.

To be happy piddling along fobbing user's off with excuses when bugs were abounding...hmm.

SSeemingly Gone to ground while waiting fir the faithful to rescue them. No change there.

I considered subbing to save the site as I used to sub pre-Vanilla. I wasn't even going to bother posting at all, but it will most likely be the last one.

I had some pretty great years here since 2007 but once the close account function came in (understandably), it completely changed the dynamic. For me, it has been on a downward spiral in one way or another since. Now I sporadically lurk, as the circular bickering is tiresome to watch, never mind engage with.

I like many others will not sub. My reasons are not anything to do with mods, bans, rulez, or Atari Jaguars.

I know nothing about the site owner or leadership, and therein lies the problem for me. I cynically see this crusade as a savvy business move. A last attempt to claw back as much money as possible before inevitably turning off the lights, or selling once there is maufactured evidence of growth.

I may be way off the mark, but nothing Odhran has done since taking control has inspired confidence, at least from my limited perspective. Being strategically absent while your remaining loyal userbase screams for help, does not translate to growth.

Cap in hand with no clear evidence of a plan for the next 12 months, never mind beyond...the age of the "trust me bro", comes to mind.

I agree with most, a punt of €50 after dedicating a portion of your life to Boards is worth the "what if".

Simply put, I don't think a funding spurt driven by nostlgia will save the site. And worse, I don't belive that is the actual intent.

For those who sub and stay, I wish you all the best . I hope to be proved wrong.

    Bon Jovi! SFP.

What do you mean cesspit of social media.

FB and X are brilliant sites.

And you don't have mods banning people left right and centre like on this place.

Has there been any further updates from the admin team/Odhran ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 895 ✭✭✭Avatar in the Post

Nobody is being asked to take out a mortgage to subscribe, it’s the price of a coffee each month.

Personally, I don’t care what Odhran (I had to go back to your post to check on the spelling) does with the money. It’s pocket change. All these questions, what’s he doing with the money, Boards was so much better back in my day, (shakes fist at cloud) is so much effort. Pay, don’t pay, enough with the teenage angst.

Hello, quick question for the admins —

    I’m not planning on subscribing.

Do I need to post here explaining my reasons for not subscribing, just to make sure Boards doesn’t dip into my bank account and take my money?

Or can I simply say nothing and trust that I’ll remain blissfully unsubscribed?

    Thanks in advance!
