    https://www.independent.ie/regionals/dublin/dublin-news/another-laneway-in-dublin-will-be-closed-off-due-to-anti-social-behaviour/a954799211.html

Swan Alley the latest to go, anti-social behaviour. Residents will be delighted but it's a sign of giving up by the council. Watch as it fills with rubbish over the summer months.

And its where the junkies begging outside Tesco and Centra go to smoke their crack pipes when the dealer comes round.

The lane beside Vicar St will be next.

Closing these lanes will only force this activity on to the main streets. It won't stop it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,607 ✭✭✭thereiver

The council cant stop junkie,s or criminals going to a lane to sell drugs or use them ,thats the job of the gardai, the residents or business,s voted to close down the lane ,there,ll be gates on the lane to allow business acess .

Is there a city in europe that has no drug dealers or junkies . our prisons our 110 per cent full right now . they,ll just go to another location to use drugs .

I saw some lad begging outside the Tesco Express there and 10 mins later he was smoking a pipe in the doorway. They don't care.

Was up last saturday for the day from Cork to the city centre. I'm not too fond of Dublin, too many people and too pricey for me but the place was hopping. Really good atmosphere about. There were 10-15 Guards standing around the top of Grafton street when maybe they could have been walking up and down more but apart from seeing the occasional junkie approach people for money saw no trouble or gangs of scrotes or anything like that. Felt very safe. Been up every now and again for gigs and concerts so even at night time out and about never felt unduly cautious.

Maybe I'm lucky and I don't doubt some have had bad experiences but to answer the thread title I would say yes. Also have a family member with 2 young adult kids living up there for the last 20 years and never heard from them of any hassle.

I was thinking the other day about this post. Less than a year on, I still venture into town a couple of days a week and it has utterly changed. The vibe of menace is certainly no longer there and the place seems a bit nicer, a bit cleaner and really tidy.

There now seems to be Garda all over the place. I generally do a walk from the Grafton Street, across Dame St and TB and then across to Henry/O Connell Street when I'm mooching. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say there are now numerous Garda on every street in the City Centre. If I encounter 50+ Gardai it wouldn't feel strange. I was meaning to ask one of them how it came about and what was the strategy, but didn't as I felt that would be a bit weird.

There are still the usual suspects loitering around places but it isn't as overly noticeable as it once was.

Gardai seek witnesses after man is seriously injured in Dublin stabbing incident - Limerick Live

A man is being questioned by Gardai following a stabbing incident close to Dublin city centre in which another man sustained serious injuries. Gardaí say they attended the scene following reports of a serious assault that occurred close to Rosie Hackett Bridge, Eden Quay, Dublin 1, at approximately 4.30pm on Monday

4.30pm on a bank holiday Monday, city centre, is more AGS visible in the city centre, is more needed? As a non Dublin, I used love visiting the capital but last time I was there, I couldn't wait to get back on the bus home if I am honest

No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change this World

I was in Dublin that day. Devious toastie and cupla deacent pints of murphys. Happy out and talked to some some English families. Delightful. Sun was out, kids having ice-cream, only 47 stabbings.

Quite and lovely day in dcc

I will say to be fair (I'm in town multiple times per week) I've noticed an increase in gardai on the beat around the city centre.

It's easy to spot because it was non-existent before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,237 ✭✭✭Jizique

Definitely a marked increase in the number of guards, need to be careful on the bike now as likely to stop cyclists for every infraction now, which is a big change

A woman was a victim of a serious sexual assault in Sean Moore Park in Dublin 4 in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She also needed medical attention after the attack.

Anyone who had seen anything suspicious in the area between 11pm Monday night & 2am Tuesday morning are being asked to contact Kevin Street Garda Station on 01 666 9400.

Good for some areas and much needed , but as usual at the expense of other areas ,

areas outside dublin going to total ruin , its now usual for large provincial and county towns to have one car between two or three towns at night ,

places like Ashbourne Wicklow or Kildare town for example have little to no cover at night and arent getting any new bodies as every thing goes to dublin so that there can be a social media post of 20 new people in Kevin street .

Places like that get hopped off most nights by lucky dippers or tool thief's . while operational units like India victor (night time partols of the motorway units ) Uplands (daytime car theft unit) are gone as theres no money , all while a massive wave resignations and retirements is just stating.

    drew really fcuked us all

This thread is ridiculous. How many millions of people have stayed in Dublin in recent weeks with the amount of gigs and sporting events going on, and remained unscathed? The amount of events going on this summer is crazy. Reports of Dublin's death have been greatly exaggerated.

Our cities have never been better and safer. Was in Dublin city centre and it was glorious, had a few delicious scoops in the sun followed by some top quality middle eastern food. Street were packed and there was a real positive buzz. Didn't see any trouble whatsoever which goes to show that the far-right naysayers are only trying to spread their hate and fear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 683 ✭✭✭Bitcoin

    "total ruin"

Have you ever heard so much unsubstantiated nonsense in your life 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,714 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

Rammed today again and the people in kerry and Tyrone (or is it armagh?) jerseys didn't seem too scared they're everywhere.

The amount of English hen and stag dos around town at the weekends lately is mad. I thought we got too expensive for that but I keep seeing loads of them lately.

I was in last week with the Tip and Kilkenny fans, great atmosphere, looked like they were really enjoying the city.

Did you also raise concerns to your Representative Association when they successfully blackmailed Harris into ensuring that the rosters were to be done in such a way as to have no Roads Policing units in the early hours of the morning?

    No?

Then don't be a hypocrite and don't come on here shedding crocodile tears. I'll be here to pull you up on it - and the others who thanked your post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,850 ✭✭✭mikethecop

What a weird little fixation you have .

hard to have an effective RPU when only 4 out of 12 spots are filled , the only cars you can get are electric , half the ten hour day is spent doing statistical returns and repetitive and unnecessary computer time,

feel free to pull up what ever ya like pal 😅😅😅

i suppose its nice that drew has at least one person who likes him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 240 ✭✭nearby_cheetah

Just as I thought. You really don't give a toss about the fact that certain areas or units are gone or do without.

If your Representative Association really did give a toss, the rosters would be such that RPU is on duty 24 hours a day. But since I saw no concerns from you around the new rosters then it's clear to me you don't give a toss either.

Again with the crocodile tears too I see.

Policing in Dublin does not occur at the cost of other counties in Ireland. The Garda Síochána has a national mandate and is responsible for policing all areas of the country, including Dublin and other counties. Resources are allocated based on overall needs and crime trends across the entire jurisdiction, not on a county-by-county basis in a way that would disadvantage any particular area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,850 ✭✭✭mikethecop

Really hard to see you point here . im arguing that poor resource and mismanagement is causing a public safety issue

wasn't there a democratic process over rosters ? and agreements and endless endless discussions , of course having a entirely toothless representative organisation that retains the faith of very few

not sure why the weird aggression

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,850 ✭✭✭mikethecop

    Aw come one !!

every resource in the courtly is titled in favour of Dublin , thats just the way it is. most countries are the same . The city centre needed more police it got them. repots suggest that is improving the city centre . But in reality with small numbers available that has to be at the expense of areas out side of Dublin.

one car to cover athy and Kildare town ? one to cover Arklow and Wicklow .maybe one in ashbourne . is that safe ? acceptable ?

It was cut back to bare bones policing then cut some more

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,189 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

Before everyone gets their knickers in a twist about poor resource management in the Gardai, can we all accept that Ireland(government wise) is bad at resource management in every area and department.

We had 3 days of extra hot weather and irish water were urging people not to use hose pipes. In a country where it had been raining non-stop for the previous 3 weeks.

We are literally surrounded by water and there are landlocked countries with bigger Navies.

We have more money than we know what to do with, and instead of doing something significant, we are going to flitter it away on greenspaces. Turning train-tracked areas that we could put trains running on, into cycle lanes.

I'm saying the government and before someone says otherwise, its been pretty much the same government for the last 20-30 years. Same 2 or 3 parties.

Dublin is completely under resourced. It generates most of Ireland’s tax revenue but the money floods out to fund low return rural projects and vanity infrastructure. MetroLink is still a pipe dream while rural motorways costing up to €9 million per kilometre are completed with barely any traffic. Swords, a major urban centre, has no rail connection. LUAS extensions and bus corridors are stalled for years while smaller towns get bypasses and upgraded roads.

Dublin has the least subsidised public transport of any capital in Europe, yet it is expected to deliver on climate goals and support the country’s workforce.

Even local property tax raised in the capital is redirected to subsidise rural councils and lifestyles, leaving Dubliners paying more and getting less & fewer services, poorer infrastructure, constant delays. Housing is unaffordable. Public transport is outdated. Yet the funding continues to go elsewhere.

Dublin keeps the country going, and gets punished for it. As soon as we get some form of much needed policing (which according to this thread is much needed) the vultures are in the wings with their hands out again.

I really didnt want to go down this alley, but

"Dublin has the least subsidised public transport of any capital in Europe, yet it is expected to deliver on climate goals and support the country’s workforce."

Luxembourg, Talinn(Estonia) and Belgrade(Serbia) all provide free public transport. So, the above is nonsense.

Thanks @LambshankRedemption As you can see other Eurpoean cities provide FREE public transport. 100% subsidised yet Dubliners have to pay more than any other capital.
