Great fun to drive when pushed on too. If VW had put that drivetrain in a Polo, it would’ve been a nice car.

I charged at Lucan shopping center yesterday, its a nice spot to stop in cause there is a good bit of stuff beside it (Mcdonalds, obriens, supervalue, public toilets) but there is only one charger (well 1 CSS and 1 Chademo) and the shortness of the cable and angle of the parking spots means with the CCS being on the right and my port location (passenger rear) I had to park like a dope sideways across two spots.

In hindsight I could have reversed into the left EV spot beside the chademo cable, as leafs have the port on the front, so a leaf could have charged ok from the right spot probably

I hope they don't find the apps to locate chargers ..

I decided to do some quick calculations on the battery capacity of my ioniq 38 this morning.

I charged to 100% last night and ended up at 75% after my commute.

The trip was 60.1km and my consumption for the trip was 17.3kWh /100km

This works out as using 10.4kWh for the trip, and since it's 1/4 of the battery , the full battery in this calculation is 41.6 kWh

Obviously something is a bit off with the process, because even if the 38 does have a buffer as is often reported, surely that wouldn't be reflected in the battery percentage as it's not a buffer anymore, it's just the battery size!

And I know I also could have used 25.8% of the battery or whatever so its not going to be super accurate. Is it just a case of averaging out a few times to get a more accurate calculation.

I would have thought variables such as ambient temperature, speed, AC etc would have been taken into consideration as I was using my actual consumption for a trip

Is there any other way to calculate the battery capacity?

Edit: Blue link reports my days usage as 9.66kWh (I've only made this one trip), that works out as a full capacity as 38.64kWh, which seems more reasonable

There's a fundamental problem with measuring battery capacity which is that it's impossible to measure the remaining capacity of a battery at any one point in time

This is in contrast to a fuel tank which can easily be measured

So the only true way to measure it is charge to full and then discharge to empty and see how much energy you took out

Doing a partial discharge is somewhat inaccurate since the 75% SoC is only an estimation by the car

It also won't account for cell imbalances within the battery. One cell can discharge faster than others which can cause the SoC to drop suddenly

Some cars can be forced to rebalance the cells by leaving at a low SoC for a few days. After that it may appear to "recover" some kWh from the battery health estimate

Recently I saw a Zappi on a post in an on street parking space. Looks like it's wired back to someone's house, although the cable must be buried so no way to be 100% sure

I'm pretty sure the area in question is run by the local council and not a management company

I won't say where I saw it because I don't want to get anyone into potential trouble

Has anyone had success getting a charger installed on a street parking space? I thought the default stance of councils was to deny permission

You won’t get it. What you saw was illegal unless it’s MC lands.

That's what I was thinking, as I said I'm pretty certain the land is managed by the council so likely someone chancing their arm

I'm not going to lodge a complaint, the councils have had years to fix the problem of overnight charging for on street parking and have happily sat on their hands. I'm not surprised at all that people are skirting the rules

Ya might need a “plan b” lads- probably worth opening a discussion on where this forum might end up? Maybe a mod might lead the way?

Live stream of the Goodwood Festival of Speed has quite a few EV's going up the hill this morning, including (at a quick glance) a cyberster, Ioniq 9, Lotus Eletra and R5.

There's a few EV specific forums around, SpeakEV in the UK is one example off the top of my head. There's also Reddit which I think has a fairly large EV community

There's the social media platforms obviously, but I personally don't want to go near them to have various crypto scams and right wing conspiracies shoved in my face

Someone could always volunteer to setup a community on Mastadon or something similar

The problem is always how you manage moderation. Boards has generally managed to have very decent moderation in my view which is hard to find elsewhere. However that's partly because the community is quite small and not a major target for spammers or bots, a bigger platform would probably require a harder stance from mods

I'm not sure other platforms will manage to hit that balance

Bit of a random thought here, what's the average getaway car chase going to look like when all cars are electric?

I really want to see a story on RTE about some bank robbers who got busted at an Ecars charger because they couldn't get the app to work 😂

Or they get to the only fast charger in the area and the cables have been cut 🤣 Foiled by there own kind.

I found speak EV to be dwindling too in recent years.

It’s an unfortunate step in evolution (good or bad) but I’ve constant called it that these forums are dying out due to the social media platforms.

I can’t see the site going, I think the members will pay the €50 tbh.

True, I think the idea of running a forum site as a commercial venture is long gone. You either do it as part of a business (e.g. MyEnergi forums or similar) or it's a community effort dependent on volunteers

I don't think Boards will go either but it's going to be going steadily downhill as members move on. Younger people nowadays aren't looking to forum sites so there isn't a stream of new members to replace people leaving

If he is going to turn off the lights, I'll buy the site and keep it running - I dare say much better than before.

    lol

I mean I am a nerd but I'd be looking to run it as a going concern with enough income to pay for staff to keep it going and to change off the awful stuff that has been brought in in the past few years. To be honest, I'd love it but I don't think it would ever happen. I'd prefer it to keep existing as is, but the old €1 for a highly indebted boards.ie style offer could be interesting!

“ I don't think Boards will go either but it's going to be going steadily downhill as members move on. “

The latest communication clearly points out that if no funds forthcoming, boards will close in months.
It would probably be prudent to start planning now to see if an alternative could be provided for this wonderful EV forum

I wonder how hard it would be. There have been multiple boards splinter forums over the years, and I don't think m/any are left

Another “where will we go?” thread just started up in bargain alerts- another popular forum like this one - I’d hate to see all these great forums (outside of CA) disappear forever - I’d certainly support a new EV discussion forum elsewhere but it would be nice to house other popular non-CA forums like food or whatever in that same new site - probably wishful thinking on my part

Yes, it's almost as if there is a market for a 'boards' type of forum discussion in Ireland. I'll launch one, what will I call it, how about boards.ie lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,901 ✭✭✭✭MJohnston

The hard part isn't the technical part, it's the moderation.

I've been working on a web app that would provide a place to track updates and progress in infrastructure/development projects across Ireland, but minimise the discussion side of things in order to skip that headache (and also give people a consistent place to actually seek out genuine updates).

I was going to incorporate EV infrastructure in that anyway, but this just lights a new fire under my lazy arse

A ‘Mexican standoff’ has ended at Greystones Marina over the electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, which have not been operational for several months. Councillor Stephen Stokes said the issue has now been resolved, following the intervention of Merlin Ovington and the Environment Section of Wicklow County Council.

"There was a bizarre situation where the developer and their management company were pointing at each other as the responsible party. The result was that the EV chargers went out of operation for several months. This fresh development by Wicklow County Council (WCC) ensures improved access to essential EV infrastructure for residents, commuters, and visitors alike," he said.

Concerned residents had contacted Cllr Stokes about the matter and the local authority has now taken over the service. WCC has also engaged a contractor to service the units and manage the mobile app used for connecting to the charger and to process payments.

Yesterday I spotted an Arteon PHEV plugged into a Supercharger

    How?

They'd stuck one end of the Type 2 cable into the CCS plug and the other into the car 🫣

Genius, give that person a Nobel prize 🙄

I just can't understand the mentality. The car park wasn't that busy and the Superchargers aren't exactly in a prime location (Johnstown Estate for anyone who know it)

Surely they noticed the car wasn't charging before they left?

The best part is, there was an AC charger 10 metres away

Can't see how it will solve any of the problems mentioned in the article? From reading the article it sounds like they will be provided by a commercial supplier charging similar to what charging providers already do. Councils won't let private residents install their own. And they'd get vandalised here in many areas.
