Jesus. Just when I think a Tipp win would be slightly more palatable…

Would Dylan Simpson be worth a run with the hurlers? Big strong man and great striker, a lá declan Dalton.

Just thought of him when I saw his name on the football team.

Interesting article by Eamonn Sweeney in today’s Sunday Independent regarding last Sunday’s f**k up with the scoreboard.

He maintains had Kilkenny scored a late goal extra time would have been played as James Owen’s confirmed to journalists after the game that he had recorded the wrong score.

In fact the GAA didn’t admit the mistake until 7pm Sunday evening. Maybe that was common knowledge but it was news to me this morning and I have to say leaves a bit of a sour taste to be honest.

Up to now I was under the impression that Owen’s had recorded the correct score and that was why there was no more about it as it was only the person in charge of the scoreboard had made an error. It turns out now that isn’t the case.

Not 100% but a few commentators have said Owens never took his book out of his pocket to mark score for Noel Mcs wide as umpire waved wide. Its thought by some reports Owens took scoreboard at end of the game and inputted it to official database. Changed it later when he added up his actual scores in his book and realized scoreboard was incorrect.

Nothing to do with Tipp either newhouse but it’s something that shouldn’t have happened at that level. Almost like telling a golfer he needs a birdie down the last hole over water when a par would have done. Wouldn’t happen in any other sport.

Apparently if Kilkenny had scored a late goal extra time would have been played as the GAA didn’t admit the error until 7pm.

Yeah its ridiculous at this level for it to happen. Need more then 1 scoreboard operator by looks of this. Should have been a way of somebody to communicate with operator to change it back.

I’m starting to fancy Tipp for the final btw… sometimes your name is on the cup as they say.

I'd say that's a fairly accurate explanation. Owens would obviously have seen the umpire waving the wide but would be taking the scoreboard at face value also. With Puck outs so quick now after a score very little time for refs to double check.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,223 ✭✭✭Charlie69

It's his job to double check though, if that means stopping the game for a minute he has to make sure the score is correct. Imagine the murders if Tipp had won in extra time only to find out they had lost the actual game.

I'd be v surprised if we won it but I have been wrong alot this year.

Exactly,we been told many times since the incident that Kilkenny should have never have trusted the scoreboard but it seems the match referee did too

I bet if KK scored a goal and the ref then realised before extra time that KK had really won they would have played extra time. Anyway it was a monumental **** up.

We clearly dont have the same players we had 10 to 20 years ago but i do believe we have players capable of winning an AI. I think we are capable of beating any team and there are teams capable of beating us. Where I believe we lack is the sideline. I think Cody management style is still influential on us. To get over the line i believe we need a forward thinking manager. We need to be better coached but I believe more so we need to do tactics far better.

Verney said he texted Owens half hour after the match. Opens replied as the gaa website so 4-21 to Tipp.replied again 1 hour later saying 4-20.shocking the explanation hasn't been given in an official statement 1 week later.the camogie girls scored 2 pts in just over 2 minutes to bring their match to extra time

I think someone on the Kilkenny sideline should’ve been keeping track of the scores too. Would it not be part of the games to be jotting down stats etc Majority of the blame lies with the scoreboard attendant but I think some has to be apportioned to the backroom team.

If they did cop it and say it to ref and he said the scoreboard was correct as has been mentioned above then that is a serious error and would warrant talk of a replay. Starting to sound like a bit of a cover up considering there has been so little said on it since. Still can't believe our county board haven't actually said something official on the situation

As usual the gaa s answer to a big mistake or issue is to stay silent

It would have been quite simple to apologise it was human error and shouldn’t have happened etc and mention after discussing it with the referees and sideline officials and score board operator we ll put these checks and balances in place for the final so this issue won’t ever arise again

Going forward at the next congress we will have to put a motion forward to adjust the rules etc etc

We have also had discussions with James Owen’s etc etc

It’s that simple but the gaa haven’t done it

Imagine if cork were playing tipp last weekend and the same thing happened to them the uproar there would be

Because it’s Kilkenny it will be swept under the carpet

We already have bloody hawk eye surely with the technology in the sliothar we have now like the soccer the ref should get alerted whether a ball goes over the cross bar or wide of the post

A premier league ref gets buzzed immediately whether a ball fully crosses the line or not straight away

Noticed a change in the way umpires waved a point in this weekends football. They came out to the end line and few decent yards away from the goalpost while giving a very distinct wave of the arms.

The 4th official is the 'official' back up 'score keeper' after the ref...

And in a lot of games , you would see the Umpires also writing down the scores.

So , the 4th official may not have been checking the score during the game as it was a bit frantic towards the end and he may not have been comparing his notes of the scores with the score board maybe a similar situation with the ref ?

Also , its something unheralded , never saw that happen , so the ref and his team wouldnt have expected the scoreboard operator to male such a mistake....

But if the ref was just going off the scoreboard (highly unlikley) that is not good enough !

How long will the county board wait for croke pk to make a statement without issuing one themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭jamesbond2022

How long is a piece of string

There might be a very brief mention of it in the end of year report from the county board

Other than that it will be complete silence

I have some sympathy for Kilkenny in this, as I think the players actions in the closing minutes were influenced by what they saw on the scoreboard. However, in all GAA matches the ref is the ultimate and only scorekeeper that matters, and is under no compunction to ensure that any scoreboards on display are correct. If there is doubt it must be incumbent on players and management to check with the ref. (or fourth official if appointed) to ascertain what the correct score is. The GAA can't apologise for RTE showing the wrong score but I guess they should have made some official statement or explanation of how the error occurred. It would be like asking them to apologise for every mistake a referee makes during a match though I'd say.

In every one of our junevile clubs games, one of the mentors kept a tally of the scores in a notebook.

Looking at some recent club games. Most impressive hurler I've seen so far this year is Niall Brennan, Lisdowney. Have huge time for him. Would love to see him force his way onto the panel

Yes really looking forward to club matches we need to find 5/6 new players. We have no impact off the bench, we lack pace and we need to replace 3/4 of our backs. The more i think about it the more frustrated i get about the All Ireland Semi Final, no way we should be losing to a Tipp team that are only up and coming. Posts saying here we are close to an All Ireland, i personally do not see it, we are to old, to slow, no bench and management have a lot to answer too. How can we expect to win an All Ireland semi final when we do not use the bench, 4/5 forwards were out of there feet on 60 minutes, we needed to replace 3, we possibly could did not push up on puck outs because our players were bet. I spoke about this before the match, that we need a plan from 60 minutes on, simply not good enough. If we were in Munster it might benefit us in the long run but we would not get out with this team and management

According to Eamonn Sweeney’s article though the referee confirmed to journalists that he had recorded the incorrect score too.
