I was going to say it was unexpected, but it wasn't really when you think about it.

He (with other key stakeholders) led the team from new to winning multiple world titles and that has to be recognised. I don't think he'll be out of work for long - if he wants to work in f1 he'll find a job.

Jaysus that's big news. To be sacked mid-season must have meant something has happened behind the scenes. Another "personal" issue? Or just down to how the team has been performing?

Max is closer to the likes of Helmut Marko rather than Horner anyway, isn't he? So maybe this will make it more likely that Max stays put…

Who'd take Horner on with the controversies that follow him though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,574 ✭✭✭NinjaTruncs

Seeing as silly season has unofficially kicked off. Let's say Toto has poached Max, could both Red Bull and Merc be keeping it quiet until Toto finds somewhere for Russel, in the same way they did for Bottas, and Red Bull waiting until they have replacement, as they are screwed if they announce they have lost Max without a replacement lined up, not that there is any replacement that could drive that car to Max's level. Perhaps George's ego thinks he can.

Firing Horner because they have lost Max doesn't make sense to me - it just adds to the sense of a team that is lost and out of control.

Firing Horner to keep Max makes perfect sense to me though.

Max is surely gone to Merc.

Ferrari might take the chance on Horner, working with Hamilton, that would be some swap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,574 ✭✭✭NinjaTruncs

It's possible Horner was saying he can keep Max at the team, and that alone was keeping him safe, just like it could be keeping Helmut at the team as Max is saying he wants him at the team.

If Max has told them he's leaving for Merc, Horner's only bargaining chip is gone.

    All purely speculation though.

Big promotion for Laurent Mekies over the last 2 years. From Ferrari to principal at VCARB to the big team now.

    Fred missed a race recently

Horner linked to ferrari, now sacked

Max off to Mercedes i think is viable now.

Big news. Obviously we don’t really know what the final straw was but if they had to make a choice between keeping Horner or keeping Verstappen that was an easy decision for them.

Although it might have been expected, it has still come as a shock.

You'd have to think it is well thought out with all places filled more or less straight away

I think you'd wanna be away from there if you are Max. Steady decline, internal politics and they are quite obviously not the team or car they once were.

Id not be taking a gamble on redbull with the new regs.

If Max wants a championship winning car then Merc is a no brainer. I think Merc will be the strongest team next year

It's all gone to sh1t pretty rapidly for RedBull.

It was probably on the cards if they had a poor start to the second half of this season and more so if they had an awful start to next season but they pulled the trigger pretty quick on this one.

Can't say it will effect them much in the short term, max will continue to grind out points for himself and the team to keep them where they are in the tables.

It does look like all their eggs are in Max basket now though, so mid/long term if he goes they are rightly screwed.

I don't think anyone can predict which car will be strongest with the new regulations. Merc were particularly bad the last time the regs changed. Remember the excessive porpoising?

what controversies? All these things are quickly forgotten. Most of it just salacious gossip..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,986 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

There's a tribunal set up to investigate it starting early next year. Hardly salacious gossip.

Only just saw the news now, holy sh1t. 😮 I mean it was obvious Horner had been hanging in there for a while now but I thought he was safe enough having the backing of that Thai family that owns a 51% share of the team. It's been a sinking ship kept afloat by whatever is left of the technical team, trackside operations and Max. Wonder what was the final straw that got him sacked.

It was an argument over tea.

    Christian: Max: Barry's or Lyons?

    Max: Barry's.

Christian: Lyons and i'm outta here.

    😉

Here's an interesting stat as to how recent each team principal got their current role:

If Max really wants a championship winning car then he doesn't make a decision until the 2027 season. Allow next season play out and see who's top, he's the type of driver who would walk into a seat in any of the teams (maybe with exception of McLaren and I think they'd figure out a way to make it work there too).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,986 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

According to Martin Brundle, Horner wasn't given a reason for his sacking. Brundle asked for an interview before he went on TV, but Horner declined and mentioned no reason given in his reply.

If Max was leaving, that would be an obvious one to cite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 419 ✭✭pjdarcy

If they lose Max as a result of this, Red Bull is screwed. No one can drive that car except Max. I wonder if they've been designing the 2026 car around Max's driving style…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,361 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Max is already out the door.

What do you think got Horner fired?

Well, that, and overseeing the deployment of a sh1t car, and shocking management of the second seat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,626 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I think the car and second seat got him sacked. I don't think it indicates anything re. Max as a certainty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,380 ✭✭✭mr_edge_to_you

Is the second not on Helmut though? I thought that was his gig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,920 ✭✭✭Joeface

Was not expecting this .Big news for the week break.

An intrusive though I had was this is something Flavio will jump on an Horner will be at Alpine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 419 ✭✭pjdarcy

Moving teams is risky at the moment given the new regulations for 2026. No one knows who the dominant team will be under the new regs but Adrian Newey certainly has form when it comes to these things so maybe Aston Martin would be worth considering for Max.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,355 ✭✭✭T-Maxx

Obviously a lot going on behind closed doors that we ordinary fans don't know about. But hell it just goes to show that nobody is irreplaceable.

This feels like the end of Red Bull as a competitive entity, upper management meddling and messing things up in the same way as we’ve seen at Alpine and Ferrari. Eventual fallout from the death of Mateschitz and the politics that have come in the power dynamics to replace him.

I wonder if we’ll see the drinks company decide they’ve no interest in F1 in the coming years and sell the team to Ford.
