I'm pretty sure I've read this entire thread, and I don't remember anyone mentioning that the cabins on the WB Yeats only have European sockets. Not sure why, but I assumed they'd be UK. So there's a tip for first timers.

There’s a selection of beautiful beaches. For example Valras Plage is a typical touristy beachside town with a promenade, bars, restaurants, shops etc. Also a couple of beach bars with a fee for sun loungers, parasols etc. Parking can be difficult but there’s a a bit of a buzz about the place. Vendres plage is less developed & is where you can jet ski.

The Nine Locks in Beziers is fun to visit. If you get the times right you can see all sorts of craft going up or down. Plenty of paid parking & a walkway with information boards on the way up from the car park. There’s a little train that goes into the town centre but it’s also a lovely walk to do along the river & over the bridge, taking you up to the cathedral & the old jail. The jail is now a hotel with a restaurant & bar terrace offering panoramic views of the river & countryside. The tower in the cathedral is a bit of a climb but again offers great views. You can also rent boats for use on the canal, go on lunch/dinner cruises or have a smaller private hire dinner cruises. Failing that, Le Cremade is a canal side restaurant in Villeneuve les Beziers where it’s possible to watch the varying successes of navigations through the lock while having a lovely lunch!

Beziers is undergoing a lot of change so there’s pedestrianisation, illuminated water jet displays in the evening & lots of children playing there in the heat of the day. Pica Pica is a tapas restaurant we enjoyed near the water installation. There are plenty of good places to eat though.

Les Halles is the revamped old market hall but has a lovely restaurant whose name escapes me now. Les Halles is near the Place de Madeleine with more restaurants & a son et lumière show every evening. Sometimes the theatre on the allées has one also.

There is also the Feria, centred around the corrida. I know nothing about that but the town is in holiday mode for the week & extraordinarily busy. Pop up bars, street food, bands, music etc. Car access can be difficult.

Do try to visit a wine domaine or two & have a tasting. Some have more English than others & indeed there’s a couple of Irish winegrowers outside Beziers.

Check out Roquebrun. Beautiful village in the hills, on the river. Very popular for kayaking & picnicing while cooling off in the water of which there’s currently plenty. The riverbed is stony though so some kind of beach shoe is a good idea. Le Petit Nice is good to eat in with their balcony giving beautiful views over the valley & their lower beach bar area has a bit of a childrens play area.

@Baybay Thanks so much. Very detailed information. I will definitely look into everything. We are hiring a car. Will check out the restaurant recommendations too! Thanks again.

Has anyone used Click and Collect for shopping at a Hyper U?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,123 ✭✭✭Fann Linn

I actually enjoy the shopping experience in France, IE the smell of the fresh fruit and veg and the vast array of fish and cheeses on display.

As do my wife and myself, but the kids don't 😂.

Just reckoned we might try do the first big shop that way and see how it goes. Also, it might save a few quid if we only order what we know we will need etc. I am dreading the cost of the groceries. The cost of the holiday is so much more expensive this year.

Agreed, very good info in Baybay's post. I'll add two suggestions, if I may. Pezenas is a beautiful town full of history and culture about 25km north east of Beziers and less than 15km beyond that is Abbaye de Valmagne, a 12th century Cistercian monastery. The monks are long gone but you can tour the old buildings and it's also a working vineyard with a "ferme auberge" restaurant. We got some wines there and they were really nice.

going to be in il de Rae - La Rochelle for the all Ireland hurling final.

It's so nice to be able to buy for and vegetables that's not wrapped up in cellophane and cardboard, particularly the heirloom tomatoes 😍

There's an Irish pub in La Rochelle, had one in it 2 year's ago. It was a weekday but I'm fairly certain they would be showing matches.

sorry to derail. Can anyone recommend a cheap SWEET white wine available in supermarkets. The wine im picking on the shelfs is not matching what we are getting in restaurants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,888 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

your probably buying blended wine, look for something with an appellation. What supermarket are you buying in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,723 ✭✭✭Heroditas

So now that this year's holiday is over the search begins for next year's!!! We went to Pin Parasol this year, fabulous site but wished it was closer to a town and beach. Any recommendations for a great campsite close to a town?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 876 ✭✭✭BullBauld

We're going to Le Pin Parasol next week for the first time and that appears to be the only negative. I normally like to be near a town and the coast.

Any advice for the site itself or the area?

You'll enjoy the site, it's a great site to be fair. We stayed in the Nature/Sensations side and it was beautiful. Quick cycle over to the other side for pools/entertainment. It was really picking up when we were leaving, entertainment was improving and better acts which was a shame to miss. Can't really comment on the area, we went to Puy Du Fou one day which is great and in to Saint Jean De Monts to meet friends once which is about 30 mins drive away. There is stuff to do in surrounding areas just involves a drive! Enjoy the hols!!

There is a nice restaurant down by the lake called L'Auberge du Jaunay which you can walk to. Lots of nice walk/run routes around the lake too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 489 ✭✭CuriousCucumber

We were in Le Littoral last week, and Clarys Plage this week.

Not too gone on Clarys Plage. Entertainment is poor compared to Le Littoral. Seemed to be Bingo last night. Kids shows are poor.

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a site more like Le Littoral for next year. Ideally in Vendee? Have started to look at Pin Parasol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭mr_edge_to_you

It's a really top class site. The pools are great and really well policed as regards swimwear and sunbed hogging. Was there twice and we would've happily gone a 3rd time but we think the kids needed a change.

The minimarket on site is not too bad - it's a bit of a stretch but you could get by. There is a decent Super U in Coex, not too far away either. We went to the Hyper U a short drive away in Aizenay.

They put on some evening shows with their own team on site and they are quite good fun. They make a decent effort in fairness.

Decent bar on site which will have hurling and football and the takeaway is standard fare. They have little stalls in the evenings too which add a bit to the atmosphere in the evenings.

L'aubegre de Jaunay is basic but nice. You nearly need to book though at peak season.

Puy De Fou is just a mental experience. Le Grand Defi is great fun too and worth a visit.

    Thanks, great info.

When you say policed with regards swimwear is it a site that only allows the french style Speedos? No regular shorts allowed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭mr_edge_to_you

Yes. They are very strict on it. No messing whatsoever. I used the jammer shorts which were fine and a UV top.

They have the decathlon stuff on site but it's well marked up. Best to bring your own.

Super u…. Disappointed so far with the wines we have picked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 876 ✭✭✭BullBauld

Sound thanks. Wore them in Le Littoral a few years back so I have a pair, if they still fit is another thing.

Use an app called vivino. You take a picture of the wine bottle and it'll give you lots of information about it. I always use it at home and its reliable. Ratings and typical price. I got some super bargains using it last time in France. Average prices were about €4.30 for bottles and they were so good. This year I'll be bringing a lot more home in the caravan.
