If she has lived in Ireland for a number of years (not sure if she is based here or the UK) she could apply for naturalisation.

Just been told by a UK Border Force person that, later this year, many border points will no longer accept the Irish passport card, and a passport book will be required.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,524 ✭✭✭wassie

I would say he is referring to border points where ePassport gates are not yet installed. UK Govt have planned to have a fully digital border by end of 2025 which involves rolling out of more egates (and reducing manned gates), Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme and eVisas.

While the Irish passport card is valid for entry, it generally cannot be used at ePassport gates. Irish citizens using a passport card will typically need to use a staffed border control lane. This is not a new change, but a functional limitation of the card's technology compared to a full passport book.

If they were to actively not accept the cards (at manned gates), there will need to be official announcements from UK Border Force in advance of this to give individuals and business warning of such a change.

In the meantime, all official guidance reaffirms the validity of the Irish passport card for entry into the UK for Irish citizens.

Any suggestion that the UK Border Force will not accept passport cards for Irish citizens until such time would contradict official government policy and the fundamental principles of the Common Travel Area.

How do you properly dispose of an old Pasdpirt?

You can put it in a good shredder. If you don't have one just clip the corners off.

I wonder where can I go to get a digital passport photo for the online application. I got a relative to take it a number of times but it was rejected. Living in Dublin. Thanks

Any photo machine will do it, it gives you a code. Most pharmacies too

You can find your nearest photobooth location below. As @Caranica suggested, you can get this delivered digitally also via email.

Cut the corners so you won’t use it by mistake and hold onto it as a keepsake if you want

Send it in with the other documents

Just completed my renewal online using a code from my local Photo-Me booth. Totally painless.

My passport expired two days ago and I only knew because Revolut notified me that my ID was now out of date. I had signed up for a passport reminder from the passport service (found the confirmation in my old emails) but did not receive any reminder - so just a warning to others that it's not working. It had worked previously for me.

Thankfully, I have no travel plans, but it is my only photo ID.

On the opposite side to your experience with Photo me, got photo and code last Saturday, machine stated phote would be approved by DFA, inputted code on DFA site, photo declined, reason either too close or too far away.

Hi everyone, hoping someone here has had a similar experience.

I applied online yesterday to renew my father's Irish passport, as it expires in August. What I didn’t realise at the time is that, according to the passport website, the existing passport becomes invalid as soon as the new one is issued.

However, when I googled this beforehand, everything I read (including Citizens Information: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel-and-recreation/passports/renewing-an-irish-passport) suggested that the old passport would remain valid for up to 6 weeks after the new one is issued.

The complication is that my father is currently in Spain and flying back to Ireland in 10 days, staying for a week, and then returning to Spain. I timed the application so the new passport would (hopefully) arrive while he’s home.

I spoke to Passport Live Chat and they advised against travelling on the old passport once the new one is issued. They also said they can’t pause the application, and although it might be possible to cancel it, it will likely be auto-approved soon.

Has anyone here travelled on their old Irish passport after a renewal was issued? Would really appreciate any advice or insight.

Reading the CI website it states:

If you apply for a new passport before your current one has expired, your new passport will run from the date of issue.

    and

If your current passport is due to expire in the next 12 months, you do not need to send your current passport. The previous one will be cancelled within 6 weeks of receiving your new passport.

However the DFA Passport FAQ states for a passport with less than 12 months validity:

If you renew an Irish passport, the previous one will be cancelled within 4 weeks of when you receive your new passport.

If it were me, I wouldn't be too concerned. If your Father travels on the old passport and is queried by the airline, he can simply claim he hasn't yet received the new yet. They can confirm this with Immigration if they are in any way concerned.

As an Irish citizen he's not going to be refused entry into the country.

    Anyone ordered a passport recently?

My expected issue date on the portal is 25th July which is day of flight so not looking good. Just wondering if they might give themselves a buffer and theres still a chance they might issue it before then

Yes I applied online to renew my passport and passport card (expired a few days previous) on Wed 2nd July. The estimated date on the tracker was 16th July. They arrived together in the post on Tue 8th July.

Thanks mate, put my mind at ease.

It actually arrived today after submitting app on Sunday. Pretty impressive turnaround

Glad you're sorted for your flight. Yeah, the 6 days for mine is the longest I've experienced in the past 5 years. Applications for family members always arrived within 2-3 days.

I am living abroad in a country with a poor postal service. Is it legal to renew a passport when in ireland on holidays with say your parents address or do they need your abroad address? Not lived in ireland for over 10 years.
