It wouldn't be the first time that Cahill got the training intensity wrong for a big championship game.

I'm assuming it'll be tonight before the team is named, it'll be interesting to see if there are any changes from the last day, I'd imagine the 2 areas where we might se change are Murphy for Walsh and Cody for Donnelly but as a few others have said I'd be tempted to spring Cody from the bench with 20/25 minutes left when a bit more space is coming available. A few here and in the media have mentioned about our weak bench but I think this is one area where we have improved this year, if we have Murphy/Walsh, Blanch, Mackessey, Cody/Donnelly, Hogan and Doyle ready to come in and do a job that's as strong as any of the teams left in the championship. As someone said earlier in the thread it's now or never for this group of players, if they don't win an AI this year you'd imagine there will be a lot of change next year, this team believes they're good enough to win an AI, now is the time to show it and I think they will, it'll be tight and might even need extra time but I think we'll get over the line.

I think the biggest issue with this team is that they have a tendency to go out of games at crucial times. If they go out and play for 70 mins then they can win. If they they dont and Tipp get a run at them it could be the same as 12 months ago. Lyng needs to have options on the bench that can change the game if we are losing or the game is turning against us. He will need at least 4 out of the 5 subs to make an impact. IMO the team with the most impactful bench will win. Another area could be free taking. The team sheet will be interesting.

I think at times a bit too much is made of the weak/strong bench. Selectors of any team will,IMO, start with what they believe to be their best 15. Very often a relatively unknown player will come on as sub and make a fig difference. Keeping a top player on the bench and hoping he'll come on and turn the game is certainly playing with fire. I see little between the teams and Kilkenny as leinster champions are deservedly favourites but otoh tipp finished on equal points with Cork and Limerick in Munster.

I agree, if the likes of Cody came on and scored 1-2 and KK lost by a point or two everyone would say he should have been on from the start.

That's a strong team, and Tipp will do well to hold that forward line.

I can see us going for goals straight from the off and not letting the younger Tipp lads settle in a packed Croke Park.

Was it Herity was in goal in the AI 2011 and a KK official was congratulating the players one by one and came to him and said something like

"Not you, you nearly cost us the game", referring to the soft goal scored by Pa Bourke.

Herity was absolutely terrible in the goal for Kilkenny, i do not actually remember him making a save during his time, just mistakes.

Every time he jumped up to catch a ball in a crowd or tried to take a ball down above the crossbar your heart was in your mouth

Plenty of diving but the often away from the ball

Yeah Kilkenny will take the game to Tipp, trying there best to get in turnovers and stop the running game, especially Tipp aiming at lads like Reid and Deegan. Lawlor and Butler will hold Forde and Mcgrath, the 2 forwards are slow, Tipp wont get much joy going direct imo. I can see Kilkenny working there socks and probably be ahead or close to it after 60 mins, this is when players like Billy Ryan, John Donn, TJ, mossy etc are absolutely knackered and cant continue the intensity and teams get a run on Kilkenny. Hopefully management have a plan from 60 mins on to counteract this.

His puck outs were poor, he was slow off the line. Look he seems to be a very good coach but he was very very poor for Kilkenny. Cody was happy man when he replaced Herity

Course Cody famously hated Herity anyway. That fact may have ended up contributing to his reluctance to get involved with the county set up in later years too?

Regarding the team for Sunday, certainly the best forward 6 as a unit in the country. However I do worry about our bench, nothing stands out with the wow factor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,135 ✭✭✭newhouse87

Nearly all the pundits going for Kilkenny, Will o callaghan only pundit tipping tipp. They can't all be wrong surley, Kilkenny by 4 unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Village87

At the moment they are only better than a bad bunch of Galway forwards. We will find out Sunday. Hard to know where exactly we are at, my only concern is the lack of pace but hopefully we can get the better of a strong Tipperary backline. Our forwards will work like dogs and have great character, hopefully Mullen can lift it now

Tipp will target our 6 & 7, Jake Morris if he keeps up his recent form, on Deegan, Lord help us, bloodbath.

There has to be a plan for Jake Morris and Ormonde, if we let them dictate we’re in big trouble.

We could have Butler shadowing Morris and Deegan dropping back, Morris a huge player for Tipp now and very dangerous if he gets a run at you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭Nedflanders02

The last 2 league games against Tipp we have stood off them for the puckouts and let them build for the back, I think on Sunday we have to push up on the puckouts and force them to go long or make risky puckouts. If we give them time at the back and let them get good ball into Morris/Ormonde/Forde etc.. they will cause us trouble, if we can force them to start hitting 50/50 ball into their forwards it'll suit our backs a lot better.

Was mentioned on a couple of platforms that Keoghan could be a doubt with a hamstring.

Donal og is going for Tipp..he hates kilkenny with a passion though and rarely goes for them

Few lads putting the boot into herity cause he went to tipperary I guess. Let it go lads. He's entitled to go where he wants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Village87

I agree, he is 100% right and doing a great job, fair play to him, him going to Tipperary is not clouding my judgement on his standard of goalkeeping at intercounty level which was a very low standard.

Kilkenny by 10 plus. Kilkenny Cork final.

Forde and Morris are the two who need particular watching. Must be man marked out of the game.

a Dublin tipp double is paying €360 for a €10, great odds.
