I'd imagine part of the "defensiveness" is due to the fact that you routinely play the devil's advocate (for lack of a more direct phrase) for all matters regarding a certain province.

Setting that aside, you do really how paradoxical it is to say on the one hand "he has had loads of gametime, you can't blame injuries" and then on the other hand say "he hasn't gotten game time, he has stalled".

Action's speak louder than words - so surely the fact that he was starting ahead of JOD for the entire run in for the URC means that the selective example you're choosing to focus on (Saracens) is nothing more than that, a selective example. (Not to mention the five out of five Champions Cup games Ahern started the previous season). Wouldn't you agree?

Yeah Deegan and Penney are two guys who have just completely stalled over the last while.

While I agree the Larmour comparison doesn't ring true, I also think that there is no world in which Hume or Baloucoune were "tipped for great things" in the way that Deegan, Aherne or Penny were. That's not a meaningful comparison. Great things were expected of Deegan and Aherne before they ever played provincial rugby - the two backs earned a reputation after a few years' performances for Ulster. Absolutely true that they haven't kicked on the way we were hoping/expecting, but not the same situation at all.

Deegan has just had his best season ever, IMO.

    Just not enough.

Hume maybe wasn’t a great example but the level of expectation for Baloucoune has been enormous going back five or six years now.

After having come through from the sevens as an unknown, and off the back of a series of performances for the senior team. That's a whole different ball game from the 'tipped for greatness' that Deegan and Aherne carried with them.

The 23-year-old is one of the most versatile players in the Ireland camp. Across 17 appearances for Leinster in the season just gone, Osborne started games at fullback, on both wings and in both centre positions.

Five of his seven Ireland caps have come in the starting team, with Osborne wearing the 15 shirt four times and starting on the right wing in the Six Nations against France. Against Georgia tomorrow, Osborne moves to outside centre, forming a new-look centre partnership with Ulster’s Stuart McCloskey – the most senior member of Paul O’Connell’s 33-man touring squad.

“As a 13, you’re probably a bit of a defensive leader in the team,” Osborne says.

    _____________

“It’s probably different from, say, being a fullback. You’re close to the ball as well. There’s that little bit around where you’re scanning, you’re talking to the 10 and stuff like that. So there are differences, but I’m enjoying each position. I’m ready.”

Despite his rising stock Osborne faced a challenging year at Leinster, with the arrival of Jordie Barrett increasing the already strong competition for a place in the centre positions. In the 2023/24 season 15 of Osborne’s 16 starts for the province came at centre (nine at inside centre, six at outside centre). In 2024/25, he started four games at 12, two at 13, six at fullback and three on the wing.

Unsurprisingly, the Kildare native is reluctant to pick any one position as his ‘favourite’ – a question he’s faced countless times across the season – but admits that versatility can work both for and against him, using Lions’ back Elliot Daly as an example.

I think his best position is 12. Defence is not his forte. Bundee will turning 36 at the end of the 6N. I'd like to see Osborne starting at 12 for November.

    & this tour!

Bit annoying that the sky guide hasn’t updated to say Virgin One are showing the match yet. Will be travelling when it’s on, so will have to record a few different programmes around that time and hope it works.

It's a fairly old selection to be labelling as a "development squad", 4 out of 5 of the outside backs are 27 or older, backrow are 25/27/29. Those are players in their prime who've been around a while.

Has there ever been a less high profile ireland rugby match? A squad of 2nd and 3rd choice players, most of whom would prefer to be on a beach vs the not so mighty Georgia. I'd say a lot of people who regularly watch the 6 nations for example barely know it's on.

All the while, competing against the hurling semi finals, lions tour, Wimbledon, summer holidays etc.

Yeah But this isn’t a big commercial event. My mother would have the 6N on the tv in the background.

This is about developing the next group of players and coaches. There isn't a Doris or Ringrose to look to for solutions. The next batch of players and coaches have to step up and make decisions. That's important.

Ireland played two tests against Japan in 2017.

Ireland squad had 19 players with 5 or less caps. Games were on at 7am.

    It bypassed most Irish fans

Surprised they are capped occasions when Lions is on. In earnest it’s an Ireland A game , still excited to watch it though for emerging talent watch

Remember the time we played the US and the ref had never seen a rugby game before and everyone on boards was drunk? God be with the days.

Fair point yes. You're right, it's important for getting players into that environment and getting high level coaching.

My point was more so that it's a bit off Broadway if you like

    Ireland lucky there.
Terribly attempt by Stockdale and Prendergast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

    usual prendergast tackle effort.

    no try though, no grounding.

He has a career in reiki if the rugby thing doesn't work out!

Stockdale missed him. The next tackler's job is to cover the outside. Prendergast does this and misses him, but has forced the ball carrier to (beautifully) step back inside where tacklers 2 & 3 (Osborne & Casey) do (just) enough to make the grounding impossible.

But don't let this stop you having a pop at Prendergast.
