Thought Busby was treated extremely poorly and what Hansen did was disgraceful. There is no game without referees.

I agree to a point the way the Hansen incident was handled was poor. But I don’t see the point in putting up a post like that on LinkedIn. In my opinion it just comes across as pathetic and looking for attention.

While the game obviously needs referees to function, I don’t believe referees of his standard should be involved at the top level. I think the general consensus from most people was he was not good at his job so why keep assigning him to referee URC and Champions Cup games. While the incident definitely wasn’t good and was handled pretty poorly, I personally won’t miss him refereeing games.

Busby should have been given more support by the IRFU, the whole debacle was regrettable

That being said, what a pathetic self indulgent post from Busby

Gives real “Angsty 14 year old making a song and dance of chucking out all their art supplies because their prize artwork was only given a B-“ vibes

it's that he went to the effort of putting it a filter on it as well……

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,453 ✭✭✭PMC83

Hansen got to say his bit in public, every other ex player, pundit, journalist and blogger got to do the same on the topic. It was everywhere at the time, everyone discussing it. The only person who stayed quiet on it, was Busby himself. Now he's out of the IRFU's employ he wants to have his say and why not? He's not the first person to do it. Only a few weeks ago ex IRFU employee Harry McNulty was doing something pretty similar.

Harry McNulty was effectively sacked. Busby decided to walk away himself. It just comes across as pathetic to me to be honest. Why not say it at the time if he had anything about him? He was leaving the IRFU anyway.

As someone said above, no doubt he will make a few quid from speaking at rugby clubs off the back of this, which I assume is what the real objective is here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,453 ✭✭✭PMC83

Harry McNulty had retired at that stage. He wasn't sacked.

I'd imagine Busby didn't speak up at the time as he was still in IRFU employ and there's procedures to follow in that regard when making public statements or talking to the press

I think the general consensus from most people was he was not good at his job so why keep assigning him to referee URC and Champions Cup games.

If he was assigned 'to referee URC and CC games' it follows that clearly the 'general consensus' from most people was that he was good enough.

Assuming that his statement is a media generating precursor to some well paid speaking tour following the publication of his book is imo malicious conjecture.

I've certainly seen better refereeing performances, but I've also seen worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,360 ✭✭✭bingobango12

The general consensus from fans, forums, boards etc. There have been and are referees who got and continue to get high level games who are poor referees while supporters of both teams shudder, it’s nothing new.

Look it doesn’t really matter either way, he has left referring. I just find that post he made a bit embarrassing. If someone felt they were mistreated by my employer, left and put up that post I would think the exact same thing. Particularly if their standard of work was not typically good.

Conor Murray was on the Alex Payne and Mike Tindall podcast that came out yesterday. I didn’t listen to it in its entirety but he said the love had gone slightly with Munster in the last few seasons. How he was trusted with Farrell and Ireland but not with Munster when he went back.

It’s well documented but Farrell really is an excellent man manager of the players it seems.

Is Murray retired or still looking for a new club?

I need my eyes testing. I read the first sentence as Connor Murray was on the Alex Payne and Mike Tindell podcast and came out.

Not having a go at him, but I'm not sure he would have been 'trusted' by Farrell in this year's 6N if Casey was fit.

These guys have huge self belief, and it's necessary. But I think Casey has really surpassed him. And it's no discredit to him as he's 36 now.

I didnt bring up the player - another poster did lamenting him not making an expected breakthrough at international level and I pointed out he has also failed to make the breakthrough at provincial level too and that one cant really be excused by recent injury, despite how you still tried and failed to.

The fact that you are trying to use Ahern missing out on Irish developmental tour caps as an argument is actually great evidence that he hasn't developed as expected/hoped. The guy looked destined in the short term to at minimum challenge to be an Irish starter at full strength and is instead struggling to get starts at his province in big games or even into the Irish full training panel.

What metric do you want? The obvious one is game time at his province: Ahern went from playing at 20 years old to being involved in CC rugby the next season, including a QF against Toulouse, to find himself this year benching in big games, not being able to push out the starters and having JOD being picked to start ahead of him.

I'm sure that quote from Leamy makes Ahern feel great while Leamy and the coaching ticket keep picking other guys ahead of him. Actions matter more than words.

I really don't understand the defensiveness about this.

If this is your opinion on Tom Ahern, I’m genuinely curious on your opinion on Jordan Larmour.

No huge complaints there really. Maybe Gavin for McCloskey due to McCloskeys age and Deegan for Prendergast but both calls they made make sense aswell.

I much prefer Osborne at 12 or 15 where he can use his offloading and kicking game to greater lengths. He was excellent at outside centre during the URC knockouts though. Bang in form so makes sense to select him there I suppose.

Hope Baird keeps up his high level. Next in line to succeed POM if he does.

Definitely would prefer Osborne / Gavin. Delighted for TOB, DMurray & Coombes to be given the chance. Would also have had Nash starting at 11.

Whats the story with Aungier getting ahead of O'Toole?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,437 ✭✭✭Jump_In_Jack

O'Toole, Deegan and Doak may feel a bit disappointed, but Aungier, Coombes and Murphy deserve their opportunity to impress.
Surprising they've gone back to Prendergast over Crowley, I don't see Prendergast as good enough for Ireland. If they don't rate Crowley to start I hope there are players coming through as we won't be able to carry a slow out-half into the next World Cup. I'd rather Crowley start with Frawley on the bench.
Tommy O'Brien starting ahead of Nash, and Baird ahead of Prendergast are fair calls, both have shown good form lately.
When the squad was announced, I had made a note of Muh-Ray as a dark horse to start. He has prototypical tighthead lock physicality, and looks like a useful player.

Whatever about Crowley v Prendergast, Frawley cannot be in the conversation any longer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,370 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Prendergast is a significantly better 10 than Frawley. The latter is a good player, but has never been trusted by Leinster to run the backline. In his sporadic starts at 10 he's been pretty poor this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,212 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

with two matches and the squad makeup being what it is I don’t think it’s worth talking about anyone being disappointed until the second match team is announced. There’s just no way of reading anything in isolation really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,209 ✭✭✭Mr Tickle

Yeah this is a development squad really so there's a real chance it's just a case of rotating through the whole group.

Surprising they've gone back to Prendergast over Crowley

I don't think they ever really moved away from Prendergast. Italy is the standard rotational game - and Crowley just didn't take his chance to make his case in that match. Or for Munster for the most part, he's had a fairly ropey season - some really good games and a lot of fairly abject ones. A reset with a new coach next year might be very good for him.

I'd worry about the defence in the 9/10 channel though for sure.

Reallly is an achievent for Leinster to have 20 players away with Ireland and the Lions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,349 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

I'll briefly give in to your repeated attempts at whataboutery.

Larmour… the guy with 32 Irish caps, including 17 Six Nations caps and 5 WC caps, and started 37 CC games for his province. Just last season he played 2 Six Nations matches and started every single CC match for Leinster, including the final.

Compare that to Ahern, who is getting his first Irish cap off the bench during a developmental tour while benching behind JOD in the CC at Munster.

Having said all that, I still would not defensively jump into a thread if it was pointed out that Larmour hasn't made the progression that many expected since he broke through. Larmour hasn't hit the heights that many hoped but that just puts an even bigger exclamation mark on how stalled Ahern's progression is to this point.

Max Deegan would be much closer to Ahern’s situation, tipped for great things, yet to happen. Baloucoune another, Hume, etc.

    Larmour is the polar opposite.
