The selectors at Connaught decided pretty much right away that Ben Murphy was ahead of Devine as despite his form he was dropped almost immediately. Stu will back that I suspect. Hard to argue with those that see the talent day in day out . Doak was brought into the infamous injury ridden A game v England only after Ben Murphy got injured, alongside Gunne who was the original sub 9 but the fiasco with HIA and the loss of both 10’s, Ross B & Frawley, left Gunne on the wing for H1 and Doak starting. JGP is still a distance ahead of Casey in all aspects and WC27 will appear in no time so JGP still top choice for me. Casey will benefit from this tour with the Lions contingent creating space and the 10 conundrum may impact future SH selection also. After Casey it’s Murphy for the time being , then Doak who has a great boot but doesn’t look to be a natural 9 & Gunne who at 21 is the youngest and to me the most exciting of them all.

Tom Ahern is pretty unlucky. Every time he looks to be on the cusp of making a breakthrough, he picks up an injury that resets his progress. He's 25 and has zero Ireland caps. That's not what I would have guessed a few years ago.

Ben Murphy was always ahead of Devine as he's just come up from the academy. He got a couple of games and looked good and he looks like he has massive potential. We'll see how it works out over the next two years.

I love watching Devine play, he is very instinctive and exciting. Murphy is controlled, scripted and accurate. I know which one I'd like starting if I was a coach and I know which one I'd like if I needed to make something happen. Different players both working hard to improve, great position to be in for Connacht. Spare a minute for Blade, never ever let us down and gives 100% every minute but hardly even in the online conversations despite Irish camps and caps. Still a very good player.

I was just going through the TV schedules for Saturday. Am I right in saying that the Georgia game isn't being televised? I couldn't find it listed anywhere.

He has been unlucky with injury for Ireland but at the same time would you have guessed a few years ago that his progression at Munster would be where it is right now?

Seems to have really plateaued rather than improving from where he burst onto the scene.

Maybe the new coaching will get more out of him as his progress over the last few years has been very disappointing. POM is out of the way now but there are young players coming through so a key time in his career.

It's expected that it will be shown on virgin media

It’s certainly a big season for him but harsh to blame the Munster coaches when you consider his injury record, imo. For my money, he’s really improved his carrying and tight work in the last season or so.

I think a better example of someone who burst on the scene but hasn’t quite kicked on from there would be Jordan Larmour. (And he’s recently had his injury issues too to be fair). But I don’t think I’d be laying blame at the Leinster coaches for it.

His injury record? At a point that was a fair excuse but he was fit enough to play 42 games the last two seasons (19 games last season and 23 the year before). The lack of Irish caps can be explained by poor injury timing but lack of development at Munster can't be pointed to simply being injury related.

I didn't blame coaching, I said 'maybe the new coaching will get more out of him'. A coach can be doing nothing wrong but a new coach unlock something in a player that elevates him, even just by installing new tactics.

Your defensive whataboutery doesn't hide the fact that Ahern simply hasn't kicked on like expected despite significant availability and gametime.

Feck, clashes with the hurling Cork v Dublin!!!!!!

Lack of development by what metric?

Funnily enough, Leamy is quoted in The42 as being extremely impressed with his development over the last two years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,997 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

And I don’t think it’s accurate to claim a lack of development; he hasnt quite hit the heights hoped for him in his earlier days, but we have seen improvements in those last 2 seasons imo. Let’s hope he continues that this season and establishes himself as first choice.

But if you’re going to mention a player who burst onto the scene but hasn’t quite delivered versus what might’vebeen expected why is it “defensive whataboutery” to suggest someone else who, imo, fits that description better?

So he's been prevented from getting Irish caps through injury but Munster have somehow also stunted his development? Surely if his development stalled he wouldn't have been in the running for Irish caps in the first place. Is Ahern going to be the next provincial player up to have everything he does analysed exhaustively so that his international aspirations may be written off. Will it be that he missed a tackle once or that he doesn't pass enough I wonder?

Scott Wilson called up... interestingly, no mention of any injury to anyone else.

Great news, I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do at the next level. He looks like a really promising player.

Maybe a THP currently in Australia is injured and a THP on his way to Georgia is needed, thus opening a spot ?.

I doubt Clarkson, O'Toole or Aungier is quite ready for the Lions.

Chris Busby not happy with the IRFU

He can be as pissed as he likes. It's a great day for rugby to have him gone. The worst referee I've come across in this new era.

The point is Busby is doing his best to drum up attention for a book and media tour, speaking engagements, etc, any way he can possibly knock a few quid out of a rash comment in a press conference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,563 ✭✭✭✭phog

The point is we'll have no game if we don't have refs. The IRFU showed no support for him in his hour of need. It's going to be hard sell for someone to step into the shoes of Busby when they see how Busby was abandoned.

Hansen was an absolute disgrace and should have got more of a ban than he did.

But I really don’t know what Busby is hoping to achieve here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,360 ✭✭✭bingobango12

That’s pretty pathetic to be honest. As unfortunate as it is, criticism and stick come with being a referee, in all sports. And when you’re as poor a referee as he was, you’re likely to get more of it than others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,286 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

Regardless of his capabilities as a ref, he is a person. And the IRFU utterly failed one of their employees.

Look at the abuse Andrew porters wife got on social media whilst 6-7 months pregnant ( after a series of miscarriages) because Antoine dupont suffered an ACL injury by a pure accident which had little or nothing to do with Andrew Porter.

Wilkins was still there at the time right? And clearly knew what he was going to do. There is zero chance Lancaster would ever allow that kind of thing thankfully.

It was a failure across the board and while I don't rate Busby as a ref but that is wildly beside the point. The IRFU should have come out with a statement damning Hansen, not waiting for the URC to do their dirty work for them.

Suspect he is just lashing out which is understandable if potentially ill advised.

more bridges burned by the IRFU, they need a **** HR manager

Hansen at least got suspended, even if it was tokenistic. Connacht and the coach should have had a big fine at least as they were clearly instrumental in it. Money changes everything.
