    Thanks a million. Accommodation around Abbeyshrule was throwing me off a bit.

    Clarke bridge to Newcomen bridge open now. Posted a couple of photos over on the other thread.

    Is it open now or tomorrow? Post says the 21st.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

    It’s open now. I diverted when I spotted it on my way home and cycled along it. Post is referring to July 21st, for the next section.

    It's actually not that bad, plenty of visibility and further away from the bulk of the traffic. I felt the same as you when I saw the photos, but it's better in person.

    I've passed it a couple of times in the car so didn't get a good luck. It's not as bad as I first thought given the traffic is one-way on each crossing - are there ramps for the car traffic?

    After 12 months since my last trip, Im heading for Clondara (maybe) at 7.30 on Saturday morning and Im wondering if;

    1 The Deep Sinking is a)as dodgy as ever. b)Much improved. c) Other ?

    2 The entire length of the towpath is now open?

    3 The entire length of the towpath is now surfaced (except for the Deep Sinking) ?

    4 Allowing an average time/speed of 15kph is still reasonable?

    5 There is any other news (not involving Tr**p)?

    1 The Deep Sinking is a)as dodgy as ever. b)Much improved. c) Other ?

    I've not used it but I think posters here recently suggested some minor surface improvements

    2 The entire length of the towpath is now open?

    There is still some upgrade works happening between Deey and Pike Bridges (Intel to Carton)

    3 The entire length of the towpath is now surfaced (except for the Deep Sinking) ?

    Nope - Castleknock to Confey still is as it has been for years.

    4 Allowing an average time/speed of 15kph is still reasonable?

    Should be fine - 10 hours or so at that pace but obviously plan accordingly

    5 There is any other news (not involving Tr**p)?

    Given Tr**p's recent actions, you're probably better off being somewhere remote away from "civilisation"

    Thanks for that SB.

    Google maps appears to be treating the tow path from Confey slipway to Confey station as closed?

    I wouldn't trust Google Maps as being the sole source of information, especially given that the path is not a commercial entity.

    The only closed section will be from Deey to Pike Bridges and, as I haven't been on it in a week or so, you may well be able to use it fully now (in reality you were actually able to use most of it - you'll know when you're there)

    I managed a quick recce spin to Maynooth yesterday and report as follows;

    From the 12th lock to Carton (?) Harbour remains unpaved

    The Deep Sinking is pretty much as it was when I last did it. Having crashed/fallen the last 2 times I did it I walked the worst section this time and could not identify any significant improvement works. The key to cycling the DS remains confidence and speed IMO. Being 73, and hoping to make 74, has caused me to lose my nerve. What a shame! I loved ripping through the DS but I reluctantly accept that those days are gone.

    Work is on-going at Carton Harbour but you can sneak through onto the newly surfaced path to Maynooth as we did while the diggers were working - be careful though.

    My companion was an experienced cyclist, but a canal virgin, on a racing bike, and he had no problem with the unpaved surface and really enjoyed the spin and the peace and quiet.

    Just in the above, the second paragraph...

    From the 12th lock to Carton (?) Harbour remains unpaved

    ...should read...

    From the 12th lock to Confey Harbour remains unpaved

    Thankfully I haven’t met you “ripping” through the narrow Deep Sinking at speed, when walking the dog with the kids.

    It’s a more beautiful section due to the way it’s been carved out of the bedrock, and is always popular with walkers and runners for that reason, and the always growing population beside it.

    A Facebook greenway group, and Irishcycle.com are now saying Maynooth to Leixlip greenway is now fully open?

    Is thar really the case? If so, it was a fast job - in comparison to the amount of time the short stretch from Confey to Louisabridge took.

    As I type, I'm currently walking the dog along it and all restrictions seem to be lifted...

    Busiest Sunday morning along it that I've ever seen between walkers, joggers & cyclists (despite the above photo looking quiet)

    The slip road realignment at Pike Bridge shoukd slow drivers down at the crossings (as might the Yield sign for the cyclists)...

    "Ripping it" is a relative term and an early morning activity, and certainly not something that can be done when there is traffic on the path. I think the only safe way to traverse the DS now is on foot and that means you have to spend time clearing your cleats in order to be able to resume cycling. I ended up diverting at the 12th lock, through Rosewod and Delwood estates, onto Clonsilla road and turned left at Clonsilla school and back onto the last section of the DS. This worked well.

    We had a really enjoyable 115 km trip on the canal on Saturday. We didnt complete the trip to Clondara due to a slightly late start (7.45) and a need to get back earlier than planned. The towpath surfaces and signposting were hugely improved since my last trip. The Carton harbour works were complete.15kph is now an easily achievable average. Strange that there so little identification or explanation of the Boyne aqua duct. Even though the weather (Headwind and some rain) was less than perfect the trip was very enjoyable. Very sad to see Mary Lynch's closed and heading towards dereliction, but the various new coffee trucks along the way was some compensation. Great to see a lot if local activities along the way, kayak polo and charity runs aplenty but not a single boat to be seen, and much of the canal is choked with weed. Maybe the traffic is restricted by work to the canal bed and the non functioning Effin Bridge?

    Is Mary Lynch's closed for the foreseeable, or were you there at too early a time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭01Surveyor

    Mary Lynchs looks like its permanently closed, and for some time. Very run down and sad looking

    That's a pity. I was hoping to do a pub crawl by bike, and hoped to have a pint there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 123 ✭✭01Surveyor

    There's plenty more, see here;

    Beware of Fureys, many a Canal Plan has ended prematurely here, the key is to be past Moyvalley before 12.00 when Fureys opens. Fureys is more dangerous than the Deep Sinking in my opinion.

    a good pub guide. The roost is 250m from the canal so well within range!

    Think O'Keeffes in Kilcock might be closed too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,423 ✭✭✭GavPJ

    Yeah, there was a fire there a few years ago and it never opened back up.

    A real shame. A lovely spot for food.

    12th Lock seems to be closed too. I've seen they are working on the building at the moment, but hadn't realised it was all closed down while the works were going on.

    Dissappointed to see that they have marked the bike lane as a shared space alongside the dedicated pedestrian lane. They did this as well on the Cross Guns to Binn's Bridge section even though all the approved drawings indicated a segregated arrangement. Presumably it now means that DCC have given up on the idea of a dedicated cycle lane on the remainder of this phase and on the next phase from Cross Guns to Ashtown.
