The stretch from Deey Br to where it splits (and cyclists go alongside the road) has now been given its tarmac surface (the "junction" hasn't been surfaced) . Still no lights, etc

Yes, you're right - I even posted photos of it. I'm not sure what I was thinking! 🙄

Does anyone have an up-to-date route of the navigable sections of Royal Canal assuming a start from Dublin city centre. I am planning a one-way ride during the summer. I know large stretches will have to be done on roads but I have struggled to find anything on Strava or Komoot.

This a route I did last summer but in the opposite direction, train to Longford and back on the canal. The section east of Maynooth is still closed to Dee Bridge. The section east of Leixlip Confey is single-track as far as Castleknock with the Deep Sinking section between St Mochta's and Castleknock being particularly gnarly, but passable. In the city the the Croke Park section is still closed.

@RunDMC - that route is much appreciated - thank you.

A couple of notes on the RCW route:

Nomad in Enfield is a good spot for coffee.

There's a water tap at Ribbontail Paddlers in Boynedock.

Along the way there's Moran's pub at Hill of Down, Nanny Quinn's at Annaskinnan, and Cunningham's at Killucan, but opening times can be hit-and-miss.

The Pewter Café just east of Mullingar is a good spot for food.

There's a water tap beside the Maxol station in Mullingar.

There's a coffee shack at Coolnahey harbour, but again, opening times are hit-and-miss.

The Rustic Inn in Abbeyshrule is a good spot.

West of Abbeyshrule, there's not much in the way of amenities until you get to Cloondra.

All the pubs were closed when I did it last year. But it was early in the day, and the year. Hoping to do it soon again, but later in the evening, and stop in the pubs I spot from the train (and a couple that are hidden too).

You had me all hyped up, staring out the window, to see the progress. 😂

I passed today and they were installing posts presumably for the wooden fence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,315 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

Where's the fence going? Hopefully not to stop people falling into the canal?

The fence is between the road and the section running alongside the road

The start of the fence (near Pike Br.)...

They seem to have gone backwards for some reason the day I passed they had about 10 posts installed, yesterday, there were just those 3!

Walking along some of the works, I note rhat they are now preparing the cycle lane ramp on the Deey Br end out onto the road so hopefully that will be done this week.

I also note that the pedestrian section looks to have been completed with the fine grit up to the top of the kerb...

    1000045338.jpg

You can also see tge tracks from bicycles so I wonder how will they discourage cyclists from taking the canal side.

I also see that what I thought were going to be lamppost stands have (thankfully) been closed off. The lid now states that they contains poisonous gas...

They will need signs at the least I guess. some wider advertising on social media etc would be good as well.

despite making good progress on the substantial portion of this along the road and looking like they were potentially on schedule, this is many months ago now and they've really dragged this out now. the last inch is a mile as they say.. the connections/ramps on both ends have been painfully slow and the pikes bridge piece will cause a lot of grief if they drag that too.

I drove along the R148 on Friday and it looks like the following changes are in progress:

    • foundation layer for bike path to rejoin canal at Deey end is in place and awaiting tarmac
    • Fence posts now erected along about a third of the R148 section
    • The rejoin path at the Pike Bridge end looked complete
    • Works ongoing on Pike Bridge to accommodate the cycle path

Had a nice spin out to Kilcock this morning and, while having coffee in Timeless in Kilcock, decided to head back towards Dublin on the Canal. Maynooth to Pike Bridge is great, part tarmac and part compacted gravel. However, just before the bridge, they have done a very good job of preventing anyone getting out onto the road and a slightly poorer job of blocking off the towpath under the bridge.

I was able to squeeze by and go through the work area onto the new cycle path beside the road only because it was lunchtime and nobody was around to stop me. I possibly could have continued on the upgraded towpath as far as Deey Bridge as the barrier there was open but I wasn't to know that! Near where the roadside cycle path rejoins the canal, it was blocked and there were a few guys working there so I took to the road as far as Deey Bridge where I rejoined the Leixlip section of the Greenway.

Hopefully it will all be finished within a few weeks and the current messy interim arrangements will be dispensed with.

It's not even open and I got abuse for not cycling on it the other evening. A passenger from a passing car screamed, 'Did I want a red carpet to use it?' as they were held up for about 10 seconds behind me!

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 43,956 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

On my spin this evening, I had a lad shout something similar in Celbridge as he passed me and he continued on ahead with his left wheels in the cycle lane 🙄

That Pike Bridge arrangement is not how I imagined it - so it goes up over the shoulder of the bridge, and not out to the flat of the road? ****'s sake, talk about making it unattractive.

Who is going to take that route - yield to car traffic, up a small hill (edit: from a standing start), down the other side, brake to yield to car traffic; versus ding your bell and slow down in case of pedestrians?

They've spent a lot of money on it, which could have been put to much better use! A decent pedestrian crossing to Carton for instance!

Thinking of cycling the Famine way over 3 days starting on a

Friday in Strokestown and finishing in the city centre on the Sunday.

Anyone done this or tips on where to stay on the Friday and Sat night.

Passed again this afternoon and good progress was being made with tarmac at the connection back to the canal near Deey bridge. The're flying with the fence posts too but cutting the weeds under them will be a maintenance headache some are almost a meter tall already! Pike bridge works were progressing well too.

We did this a couple of years ago. We started in Longford, took in Cloondra and Corlea trackway on day one. Stayed in Abbeyshrule at the Rustic Inn that night. Day two we backtracked to Ballyshannon for breakfast that had lunch in Mullingar. That evening we stay in Cunningham's in Kilucan. Back to Dublin the next day, stopping in Kilcock for lunch. It was fairly easy going as long as the weather held.
