Indeed but not UPF! Tinned fish, sardines, tuna etc also forms a significant part of the diet (and former industrial base).

It also seems to suggest the entire N56 has cycle paths when it's actually just one (long) section in NW Donegal and a few bits near Letterkenny.

What criteria do they use to rank a sport’s popularity in Ireland?
Plenty more playing football/soccer than Gaelic football in my opinion - at all ages.

Maybe , but I can guarantee you attendances at GAA games dwarf those of Loi clubs out side of Maybe Dublin and Derry

There are nearly twice as many GAA clubs in Ireland than there are soccer clubs. There isn't a hope soccer is more popular than GAA.

but GAA is split into 2 sports. You’d be hard pressed to find many in Cork or Limerick who say Gaelic football is their favourite sport for example. Hurling is barely in half the country.

More people watched the EURO 2024 final on RTE than watched the All Ireland football final. (Not including those who watched on BBC etc).

    statistics
In the last available statistics (2023), more people played soccer than either of the Gaelic sports

It’s all in all a very strange argument as most people enjoy multiple sports. They’ll have their favourites and they’ll have others with only a passing interest in.

However I don’t think it’s out of the realms of believability that soccer is the favourite sport of a plurality of people in the country (if not a majority)

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sport_in_Ireland

This link shows soccer is the most played team sport in Ireland. I’d imagine if you added in figures for Northern Ireland that the gap would be even more.

Not a lot of people know that more people play basketball than rugby.

I watch soccer whenever it's on the main Irish channels, but I'd never pay to view it, and I'd never actually attend a LOI game. I watch soccar on TV because there really is not much good on TV anymore aside from live sport. But if there was a club hurling match televised the same time as a soccer match I'd watch the GAA, unless it was brutally one sided.

I don't think TV viewership really matters when comparing an amateur community sport with big monied champions league.

And there’s folks who’d watch cricket/cycling/rowing ahead of hurling/rugby/soccer etc

So you can’t really use anecdotal evidence when the numbers are there

I did a tot up before about about Rugby versus Hurling participation and found that two counties alone (Tipp and Kilkenny) had clubs that fielded full teams in the previous year as all the Rugby clubs on the whole island of Ireland.

Rugby by participation has an vastly outsized public profile compared to nearly all other sports.

The 2022 report states that Gaelic football is the most popular adult competitive sport, so this could be what the infographic is referring to?

Have I mentioned how much I dislike infographics which don't actually provide a source for the information or what the stats are actually referring to?
