The tunnels around Bray head pose issues for the size of freight trains that can pass through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

They want to keep the rail freight, but don't want it getting in the way down the port. That's why it's being moved to the new North Wall terminal, which is due for commissioning this month.

I understood the switch to road was temporary for about 18 months due to the impending reconstruction of Alexandra Road which will render the tramway inaccessible to trains?

As part of the Rosslare Europort Offshore Renewable Energy Hub plan the port expansion is supposed to be able to accomodate a rail spur from the mainline line.

I don't believe the plan has gone to ABP yet (it was meant to towards the end of last year) so hoping it goes to ABP this year, it would be operational in 2028. Mind you the current plan is to wait to build the rail spur until it is needed, so I would say the earliest the railspur would be built is probably ~2030. However I only see the spur be built along side the reinstatement of the Waterford-Rosslare line due to the capacity restrictions on the Dublin-Rosslare line.

so will it be unloaded there and trucked down to the docks which would be moronic if so, or can ships go up to that terminal?

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

Yeah, it'll be trucked in and out of the terminal, from the docks. I imagine the longer term plan is to get the bridge built over the road, from the docks. But the new works taking place down at the pier didn't leave time to get that completed.

Where exactly is the new North Wall terminal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 19,050 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

In North Wall Yard adjacent to Sherriff Street.

New trains getting moved around, wonder if they've moved them to starting testing on the Dart network now?

    Galway v Kilkenny Final

Irish Rail have provided an additional service but not provided any return services. They released this additional service after the only return option was sold out. No availablity for Galway return.

    Is there no drivers available?

Not sure they will ensure only pre-booked tickets for stated services will have priority.

Yeah, it was over in Fairview back in April, and it's been up in Dundalk more recently for testing on the Northern road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,498 ✭✭✭bikeman1

Drivers are ok, just a lack of train sets. They are very tight. They are not doing any charters at the moment and the RPSI have been tasked to run 3 of the ones they had booked already.

Any G.A.A. specials will be within availability for what they have left.

IE have tweeted at 19:06 advertising an additional service to operate 19:40 Heuston-Kilkenny.

This was never released to the public to book. I also expect it was planned all along. Waterford has 6 and 3 spare Sunday and the 6 didn't return after operating the 10:45.

    Someone really screwed up here.

The 071s are looking well for locos that are just short of 50 years old.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

They got body overhauls about 10 years ago. Before that, they were looking very rough in the silver and black freight livery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭Citizen Six

Kind of likes triggers brush to be honest. Great locos though.

Sitting in Fairview depot this evening

Took this one with the drone from Fairview park. I didn't want to fly over the other side, just in case.

Still there this morning although it looks like it has been moved. Probably out testing last night

To be honest I'm not sure if having the cab cars only have one door per side is the wisest – there is going to be a lot of pax between the first and second doors and a lot will probably head for the first even with the open gangways…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 447 ✭✭PlatformNine

I don't think it will make that much of a difference. Remember that the cars on the new units are shorter than the existing 8100 and 8500 units and also that the cars are completely walk through, meaning that some people could easily get to the second door from the first car. It might still be a bit of a bottleneck compared to the existing units but it likely won't make that much of a difference.

Due out the Maynooth line this week, as far as I know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,966 ✭✭✭Beta Ray Bill

    The total length is 82M

    image.png

Old style is about the same:

    image.png

    So 2 * 4 is 8 for 80m (approx)
The new Dart is 5 cars
    So (2 * 3) + (1 * 2) is 8

So it's gonna be the same number of doors for the 80M

They'll be off a bit, but I think they'll be fine.

Irish Rail hace details of Phase 2 of the Cork Commuter Rail development:

    https://www.irishrail.ie/en-ie/about-us/iarnrod-eireann-projects-and-investments/cork-area-commuter-rail

A couple of points: (i) electrification is mentioned, but only with reference to civil engineeting requirements. I assume it will be at 25 kv AC to tie in with mainline electrification (ii) surprisingly no station changes at Cobh, just the one platform as at present.

See there’s a direct train from Connolly to Limerick tonight after the quarter final, is this a first in recent years?

The electrification options are outlined in the "Cork Area Commuter Rail Phase 2 Option Selection Report (including appendices)" document - chapter 5.2 "Power and Fleet Options" (page 28).

    https://www.irishrail.ie/getmedia/12cdc483-58e9-4ad2-9dd9-5f9a27ce8c7d/CACR-Options-Selection-Report-20230222.pdf

The 1.5kV DC BEMU option was given the highest rating.

Moreover, the document proposes no 1.5kV DC OLE at all, and building "static charging" points on selected stations instead. The rationale is that this will be cheaper, safer ("The presence of the high voltage power lines would
introduce new safety risks to staff and the local community" 🙄) and would allow interoperability with the future 25kV main line electrification.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 447 ✭✭PlatformNine

Regarding the electrification of CACR, it's not very well presented so I think there is a bit of confusion about what is actually happening (myself included until another user pointed out a few things).

Long story short is that the two most up to date documents I believe are the CACR project Report (link) and Depot Selection Report (link).

Section 8 (p.67) of the Project Report says that the initial Power and Fleet Options study found BEMU operation to be the best, however that the that study was essentially completely ignored because "It did not adequately consider realistic operating conditions across the network." It goes into more detail, but truthfully the more I reread that section the more I feel as though it's a scathing review of the initial Power and Fleet Options study. Section 8 further describes that OHLE electrificaiton is the preferred solution, and that BEMU operaiton was not feasible.

However the Project Report does not mention the voltage which the OHLE will operate at. That however is mentioned in the Depot Selection Report section 3.6.3 (p.31) which specifies that it will infact be 25kV, and also says that the CACR units should be based the D+ units.

(ii) surprisingly no station changes at Cobh, just the one platform as at present.

The Project Report section 6.5 (p.37) describes the upgrades planned for Cobh and has a drawing too. It does include a second platform for Cobh, however it isn't a normal platform layout. I am not sure how to describe other than thats its very similar to the layout of Heuston platforms 1 and 2.

OK, the only way I can make sense of this is that it will likely be quite a long while before 25KV mainline electrification reaches Mallow/Cork. Meanwhile Irish Rail will have DART+ BEMU stock which can be sent to the Cork area as OHLE is installed in the Dublin area. In the long run however 25KV is a no-brainer for everything outside DART+.

The reference to Battery power being safer than all thise deadly overhead wires is truly risible. How most of Europe manages to not have mass electrocutions is beyond me 😁. If you want to see potentially hazardous electrification look at the 3rd rail netweok in the SE of England, and the efforts to mitigate the hazards by having the power of at platforms onlyin the immediate presence of a train.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the whole culmination of the report was that they are going to electrify south of Mallow as 25KV from the get-go…

I think the report stated that to run the 10 minute frequency that they want, they need full electrification as BEMUs would have too slow a turnaround due to charging.

I’m not 100% sure on that fact so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but I certainly hope that that is their plan, the sooner we get some outside-of-Dublin electrification, the sooner the ball will get rolling for widespread electrification, and I think an electrified CACR could be just the catalyst for this
